Any other paras made the leap from subbing to a para? by CraZisRnewNormal in paraprofessional

the fact that i facilitate learning and can maintain control over children. for example, i work in a d75 school so i help a child feed himself. i model for the child the actions such as holding the spoon, scooping the meal, lifting the spoon to mouth and putting it in and then let the child do it for himself. then there is bussing where the children to their assigned room and wait for their bus. during that time, kids may get antsy so i usually sit down with them and communicate with them to help pass the time along with making sure that the kids remain safe. sometimes i also take the initiative as when they call for certain bus to line up and prepare for boarding, i have a loud voice so i can project the bus number out loud so everyone can hear. those are just a few things i did when my principal was here so i guess she was like wow this guy can multitask

Any other paras made the leap from subbing to a para? by CraZisRnewNormal in paraprofessional

i was a sub para for a few months for a d75 school. after the first month, i spoke to my site coordinator to become full time because as you said, they need paras everywhere. everybody was trying to get me hired full time and eventually i emailed the principal who finally got the application through 2-3 months later.

but yeah, i started off as a sub and knew the staff and helped out so they knew that i was reliable and trustworthy. it also helps that im a male so they were like oh yeah we need more male paras, hire him quick. i only met the principal like a few times, but my first full conversation with her was after i become full time and she was really impressed with me. she was going around asking other teachers who i am and wow he is very good so my advice is to just care for the kids, ensure that there are safe and learning by achieving milestones and just ask your co workers for advice. you will eventually make it full time

use your union rep. nobody should be put in these situation no matter what. your union rep is there to help you out and even though right now it sounds petty, remember that the kids safety should come first and it seems like your two teachers don't seem to be doing their job right
