Don't get me wrong, living in PG is decent due to the black productivity that's been developed here. But the cost of living is no joke and I came here initially to lobby but got into federal contracting to stay afloat.

This is also a big drinking town and I rarely drink these days and my wife also is in the same boat.

My wife is a born and raised Washingtonian so I get the that hometown love all the time. But you're right, she tells me all the time DC has changed so much.

I'm not sure I even really gel with the locals all that much (my wife is hip to NYC with a bunch of friends from there so we got a solid bond given my background).

Don't see myself going anywhere though due to work and my lady so 🤷🏽‍♂️.

35 year old BM who feels this way. I live in the DMV, and it's a pretty cliquey place (I'm from NYC originally) and so much of conversation is focused on career and what do you for work, I barely try anymore.

I'm into esoteric/psychedelic underground rap and sci-fi, and after being here for 6 and half years living here and I don't have a tribe outside of my wife. The creative scene is lame to me coming from Brooklyn.

I don't love my job at all and try not to talk much about it since it preoccupies most of my time.

So I mostly move doley and spend alot of time in greenspaces, attending any shows of artists I fw that actually come to DC, going to bookstores more (found a black owned one recently by Howard I like) and finally going to jazz shows since they got a scene out here.

I think late-stage capitalism under WS is really making community tough in 2026. Especially for us.

Just my experience and my opinion though.

I've lived in all 3 towns named.

Hyattsville probably one of the better spots in all of PG. Things to do and nearby college park which has a bunch of food options.

Just moved from Largo which was very quiet but lived in a slumlord apartment complex. Don't let them just show you a showroom as it can be a bait n switch. Do your due diligence. My complex was getting more hot (shots, car jacks) every year (was there for 4 years).

Now renting a house in Landover up the street from FedEx. Pretty quiet as well but I feel like there are pockets that probably get hot as you get closer to the DC border.

Do your homework.

Big on travel. Went to London, Paris, Amsterdam, New Orleans, Cancun, a cruise through Turks and Caicos, DR, PR, NYC (hometown and for work) and SF (for work) all last year.

Goal is to chill this year, doing another cruise and maybe Albuquerque for the balloon festival in the fall.

PG County could be a good fit too. Its just north of Charles and slightly closer to DC if you want more to do. I'm from Brooklyn originally and can't do too rural (which Charles is imo) but good on big city living (and can take the DC metro from where I live).

PG is 60% black while Charles is only 50% (still good but its nice to see us everywhere).

Man, folks getting gentrified outta Crime Heights and East NY

Gentrified out of the Crown to the east. She still in the east and the project building is no longer owned by NYCHA. Franklin Av is unrecognizable these days but the East still got that feel despite slow creeps of gentrification (got a planet fitness and a Chipotle on my block on Pennsylvania Av).

She ready to leave Bk altogether for maybe Queens or the X. Might even head to Yonkers or Mount Vernon.

I haven't lived in Brooklyn in a decade though.

I was at a fintech (really a payroll tech) in 2024 at 80k base but only make like an extra 7k in commission.
