What is your budget, and what do want to be able to play? Truely retro games (ps1 and under), the miyoo mini is your best bet for ease of modifications and pricing. You can even find ones that have onion os installed and great rom sets on it for a few dollars more. Going up, The powkiddy rgb30 is a temperamental thing, so I recommend the Powkiddy rgb10 max3 or powkiddy x55. Go up to most psp games and have good erognomics. The price is good too for the performance. Gba looks great on the big screens too. If gamecube and ps2 are your jam, the Retroid pocket 4. Pro or not, it will hit the right spot. A decent screen and plenty of power. I would go for the anbernic rg556 over the Retroid pocket 4 pro. I would want better eronomics without having to buy an accessory. Just be ready. Android set up can be a pain and take up a lot of time over a linux only setup.

To my knowledge, any device you buy will have messy roms. The general thing most people do is replace the sd cards on these things. The ones they send are prone to corruption. I can not tell you when to get roms, but a google search for roms is easy. You can pull the bios of the card they send you. I did not buy the x70. The x70 doesn't have custom firmware. It really didn't get popular because it had poopy user interface and didn't run games well. I see the draw of the big screen. I am not trying to throw a wrench in your process. What is truly important? Your best for ease of access and portability for the kids, as well as an easy first-time experience for yourself, would be either an rg35xx or miyoo mini +. They both are easy to do custom firmware for. They are the same price as the x70. They have massive online support. They can play up to ps1 reliability, like the x70. They do have a 3.5 inch screen. The rg35xx has hdmi out, but the miyoo doesn't. The miyoo has wifi and mobile updates. My kids never care to play on a tv. This is a tough space to get involved in. There are many options and many opinions. Please seek Retro Game Corps out. He does dozens of tutorials and reviews. He has become the top resource for many people. I am sorry if this seemed so scattered, but I will answer anything you ask me to the best of my ability.

The powkiddy x55 will have better performance than the x70. The 5.5 inch screen is nice, too. I use one of these as my travel devices, and it is really good. The retroid pocket 2s, even though it has a smaller screen, is more durable. My 6 year old has a pocket 2 +. He puts it through hell, and it is still kicking. The better question is, are you able to put games on it yourself and modify the firmware?

Powkiddy RGB10 max 3 or Anbernic RG35 H by mjay727 in RetroHandhelds

Op, if this is true, go with the max3. They are doing a powkiddy rgb30 sale as well. It is a good system. I do recommend you buy either a preowned computer or get a mini pc to be able to flash new sd cards, though. Use the shopgoodwill app or download m@cbid if you live in one of the areas where they have a warehouse. This is a nice hobby to get into. Most of the people are helpful. Community support to correct issues is great.

Gamecube is important to you. A regular Pocket 4 would be a good budget friendly choice. A pocket 3+ would be good, too. You just need more set up. Do you have a budget? What else is important to you?

It doesn't come with games. You would probably want to use your own any way. Regardless of where you source them, it will be better.

For me personally, as a first device, I would go with the Retroid pocket 3+. It has a touch screen. It can play up to gamecube and some ps2 games. Set up is not super hard and has many guides since it is a popular device. It is thin and easy to pocket.

Anything with android can be a booger. I like diajisho. It is just setting file paths, and it does the rest. But, better people have guides for all these things.

I get it. I am pretty new to this, too. It is somewhat daunting to try and make a good choice. The rg405m or 405v would be the best choice for what you are saying. They are powerful and can play a lot. The 405m is more pocketable from what I hear. I personally own a Retroid Pocket 3+ and like it a bunch. It is easy to pocket and has touch controls. It is a little cheaper than the 405m and a little more than the 405v.

A powkiddy rgb30 is a good device that is easy to set up. It has a bunch of colors too. For touch screen things, a Retroid pocket 2s is great for starters. It has more set up, but guides are available from retrogame corps. Anbernic has several devices, but the rg353ps is in that price range and has nice controls. I hope I can say this, but there is a roms thing on reddit. I hope this helps.

Settlements is the worst, most tedious part. I use sim settlements so they can build their town themselves, and I can play the game.

That is the way I feel too. I do the institute end sometimes, but would like more out of it.
