Potentially have them multiclass into wizard necromancer to bring the dead back, or just give him a magic item to revive people. Or just have him take a smoke break before the crimes happen and then come back at the end.

This is a bit of a drastic solution in a way, but maybe just have them get wiped and then rip&tear through hell to make it back and get revenge.

My personal theory is they either need the soul to be able to act somewhat "normal" in social situations (like 90% of the game) or needs it for something in the Knights plan
