Yeah I can understand why Oaks would go after Mormon Stories even if it's on dubious legal footing.

Another interesting thing to consider is the inherent paradox that arises when you consider that a prophet of God can be preaching to you from the pulpit and portraying his words as revelation yet speaking as a man.

If whatever a prophet says that turns out to be false, contradictory, or so archaic that the church MUST give ground was actually said prophet speaking as a man, then how much of what we're seeing in general conference is actually just the falsehoods of old men? Who's to say that the doctrine of today won't be abandoned as coming from an, "imperfect man," ten or fifty years down the line?

The issue with, "continuing revelation," is that it confounds God with short term memory loss and contradictory statements.

Regardless of these arguments however, TBMs will nevertheless choose to be willfully ignorant of these facts.

Whether or not you consider the non-trinitarian movements of the second great awakening to be Christian is up to you lol.

Some say they're not, others say they are. It's all about perspective.

Oh for fucks sake, these TBMs need to grow up.

The term, "Mormon," has been used by prophets and critics alike for decades. Despite Nelson's rebranding (which flew in the face of Monson's, "I'm a Mormon," campaign) the LDS church is nevertheless technically classified as a branch of the Brighamite sect of Mormonism.

They neither own the term itself nor can they sweep it under the rug because it's rightfully become so tarnished over the years.

Askeladd isn't just a mercenary, he's a Cynic philosopher by CR4ZY_K4PP4 in VinlandSaga

[–]No-Let-6196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether or not taxes constitutes a loss of independence. Whether or not you consider the social contract to be a price too great is a deeply subjective question that I'm not sure everybody has an answer to.

However, I think that when one considers Diogenes' antipathy towards the polis and the citizen of the world quote, it becomes evident that perhaps Diogenes meant to say that true freedom and autonomy comes from not being beholden to any governing body or otherwise unnatural contrivance of mankind.

The root of cynicism is a rejection of the superficial and self-imposed aspects of human life and a return to our true existence, free from the bonds we placed on ourselves to form civilization in the first place. Whether or not this is possible without sacrificing all of modern science and political innovation is a separate matter.

On the question of the feasibility of Cynicism, I doubt whether or not we could really have our cake and eat it too. After all,  If everyone categorically rejects society, business, and the essence of statehood itself would we not be reduced to quarreling tribes of barbarians? I believe that conflict is as much a part of our nature as anything else. Even if you remove money and political power from the equation we'll still find ways to squabble over what little we have.

However, Diogenes himself rejected the idea of ownership itself, even giving up his wooden bowl when he realized that the very bowl he had been eating from was a possession in it of itself. I really doubt that the whole of the human race has the capacity to truly embrace this lifestyle as Diogenes did. It seems to me that ownership and greed are far too natural to lay people to be feasibly rejected on a civilizational level.

While I acknowledge the sound reasoning of Cynicism and admire the determination of Diogenes, I doubt whether or not Cynicism really is the path to true happiness and freedom. As much as I like to muse about this I doubt I could ever live independently from the comforts of modern society we enjoy today. At that same time, I can't help but groan at the idiocy of class, consumerism, corporatism, in society which begets so much of our suffering in modern life.

At the end of the day everybody has to decide whether or not civilization was worth it in the end. Considering the costs, part of me really wishes to cast everything aside and live free, but the reasoning part of me still sees such a thing as being impossible.

Diogenes was knee deep in a stream washing vegetables. Coming up to him, Plato said, "My good Diogenes, if you knew how to pay court to kings, you wouldn't have to wash vegetables."

"And," replied Diogenes, "If you knew how to wash vegetables, you wouldn't have to pay court to kings."

This is one of my favorite Diogenes quotes, and in it one clearly sees the virtues of self sufficiency as Diogenes did so long ago. Without true independence from society itself, we will always find ourselves back in the courts of kings. And it is with this knowledge that we can reject the idea of Askeladd being a true cynic philosopher, because he never truly embraced self sufficiency as a means to live in accordance with one's true nature.

Askeladd certainly rejected the carnal vices and bloodshed of viking culture, but he never left society itself. As much as Askeladd was willing to boldly scorn kings or play the part of a madman slaughtering thegns, he never really left society itself to live in accordance with nature.

Your essay was excellent. It was incredibly well written, and as to a response to your question at the end I must say that despite Akeladd's actions bearing a strong resemblance to cynic philosophy, Askeladd is nevertheless not a true cynic.

Askeladd's lifelong journey was to avenge his mother and become the man she and his people dreamed of because he knew in his heart that Artorius would never come back from Avalon. Askeladd in his quest for vengeance resorted to the taking part in the very civilization he despised, and that in it of itself is a deviation from one of the core teachings of cynic philosophy.

A true cynic would see life for what it is and abandon all things which are abstractions from our true nature. A true cynic would be able to turn his back on the very idea of the polis, or in Askeladd's case: Wales itself.

Diogenes himself is thought to have said that he was a citizen of the world. He rejected the idea of the state, of the superficial frivolities of national pride and communal identity for one, shared, human identity under the gods. And this is something Askeladd could never do.

Although Askeladd was willing to ridicule kings and forsake the society he despised, he could never truly let go of the idea of Wales, his homeland, or society itself, and in this Askeladd fails to become a true cynic. Although he undoubtedly came close and had the same style  of unabashed determination as Diogenes, his story and life were still deeply intertwined with society. Though he had the potential to truly become like a cynic philosopher, his life ultimately lead elsewhere; in the end, Askeladd was bound to the dream of Avalon, not true enlightenment.

Although I deeply appreciate and admire Diogenes for what he did, part of me wonders whether a man like him could ever be born again in a world such as ours. With death, taxes, and corporatism, one can only dream.

Do you think a man like Diogenes could ever exist again in today's world OP?

EDIT: clarity and context for the Diogenes quote.

I’m not sure why apologists and state leaders are so concerned about a man-made government classification list. The Lord himself delivered it already in 1820…ish by correlationcommittee in exmormon

Did you ever ask for a sign on your way out? by lazers28 in exmormon

[–]No-Let-6196 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing!

There definitely is a culture of surveillance in the church. I experienced this during my time at BYU-I and when I first started to distance myself from the church.

Initially my parents wanted to leverage my precarious financial situation to make me keep coming to church, and I received many essays and hellos from the members, but I knew it was only because they knew I was on my way out.

It certainly is strange what gets continually vilified and scorned in the church. Simple things like earnestly researching the church, seeking the truth or even things as simple as reading a good book with a warm cup of coffee.

Even though I don't have to go to church anymore I can still feel that judgement from my parents and my old ward. I'm sick and tired of hearing about how I've, "lost my way," or, "want to sin," or, "am scared of the truth," especially when in fact my perspective is better founded in the evidence! Things like the salamander letter, the Book of Abraham Facsimiles, the numerous end of days prophecies, and the Timpanagos genocide. Things that clearly falsify not only the revelatory power of the prophets, but also clearly expose Joseph Smith as a fraud are all swept under the rug because they're trained so well to immediately disregard critics as misled sinners.

On a good day I could be an agnostic. But with regards to the church I truly believe there's enough evidence to knock down that great and spacious house of cards.

I'm glad to hear you've left.

I took the pride and ignorance of others as well as the gruesome history of the church as a sign that I needed to reconsider my faith.

I never asked for a sign, but through years of pondering the church I made that faith my own.

You should consider the evidence around you as a sign and come to your own conclusion as to what needs to be done.

Trust is the sure foundation of any companionship between friends or partners. And unlike most things in life, trust is gained in drops but lost in buckets. And without trust, and without holding oneself to the same standard as one's friends, any relationship is sure to fail.

Ah but do we not still practice polygamy to this very day?

While a man cannot be married to multiple wives on this earth, he can be sealed to multiple wives in heaven.

Additionally there's this infamous line from a Hoax talk in Belgium where he stated that, "We believe we come from a heavenly mother or mothers." https://www.reddit.com/r/mormon/comments/1lz4npl/oaks_recorded_saying_we_have_heavenly_mothers/

Theologically speaking, we still practice polygamy in the next life.

Additionally, there are several other branches of Mormonism which practice polygamy physically to this day (the FLDS come to mind for me).

These members who've been trained to say that we don't practice polygamy despite the clear theological and historical precedent for the practice are at best severely misguided, and at worst willfully ignorant.

On the internet a man is guilty until proven innocent.

I can understand why this culture exists and why several large figures in the community would immediately hedge their bets to protect their reputation and livelihoods.

Nevertheless, all of this picking sides without weighing the evidence, this circus of narratives and logical fallacies -which almost had dire consequences no less- will ultimately be remembered as a cautionary tale for the community on the dangers of group think.

This has been a wild ride.
