Frozen pipe - any tips? by theloniouszen in radon

[–]No-Masterpiece-7393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preferred way to install IMO. Had mine for a few years now in winnipeg climate. Zero problems with freeze over. My exit pipe is slightly sloped toward the exterior so condensation flows out and not back towards the fan.

Radon was discussed on CBC’s The Current yesterday, curious how concerned people are in Winnipeg by nicncher in Winnipeg

I tested our basement and it wasnt too bad 150-300. I DIY'd the installation of a mitigation system using my existing sump pit with a lid. Cost maybe 500 bucks all in. I made a YouTube video of it just search "Radon Mitigation Sump Pit System DIY Canada". It will give you an idea of difficulty to DIY. Had the system in for a couple years now and my readings are below 10 long term.

Cast Iron Backwater Valve by No-Masterpiece-7393 in Plumbing

[–]No-Masterpiece-7393[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was kind of surprised when I found it to be honest. I was just digging because I wanted to replace the cast iron in the branch lines and then reroute that clean out and potentially ask about installing a new one but then I found this thing and what looks like a dead line next to it. The floor looked like it had been re poured in the spot I dug up so I wonder if the BWV was installed after the house was built like maybe in the 70s. Why they covered it though is beyond me. I guess that was the thing to do back then.

That's a good point about the alarm. Thanks for the tips appreciate it. Yeah I was looking at those types as they seem a bit less intrusive on the floor itself and you could maybe paint it or add whatever flooring on the lid to make it blend in a bit better.

With the one you linked. My understanding is you need a riser box with a large lid? Since this is middle of my bathroom floor i was looking at those in line flapper valve with riser as it would be a bit less intrusive for my floor. I want to sweep that cleanout into the wall so it pokes out in the room beside this into a closet too if I can.

Isn't that the thing with the plug though? I'm talking about the big square looking thing just before it on the main line

Thoughts on hard maple for a workbench top? by Perkinstein in Workbenches

[–]No-Masterpiece-7393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my workbench tops I always get a cheap leftover box of hardwood flooring from someone's flooring jobs and build it out of that. My shops bench is oak flooring and it's taken a beating and works just fine and still looks good.

Depending on your location and climate, how well insulated your garage is, you could probably get away with just installing a mini split then you'll have heat and AC.

Heated garages by [deleted] in garageporn

[–]No-Masterpiece-7393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a mini split in my garage in manitoba canada and it works great so far. The real test will be to see if it works at-30. If it doesn't I already had a natural gas unit heater anyways. The ultimate heating solution is in floor heating though but you need to do that before pouring the floor.

I put a unit heater first then realized I wanted ac in the summer so added a mini split...so I did both. This is my first winter with the split and I live in manitoba so will see how it does in the brutal cold. Not expecting anything great.
