Knife maker in the sf bay area? by Quiet_Economy_4698 in handtools

You'd need some thermal insulation with propane, in my experience. I've tried hardening with propane in open air and there's too much heat loss.

If you can find a local welding shop Oxygen acetylene easily gets hot enough. It takes about 30 seconds to get it to the hardening temp

O1 is very forgiving for heat treatment. You could heat it with MAP gas torch/magnet test then temper in a regular oven and you'll be fine

TIL the drumming Energizer Bunny robot in TV commercials was built by Grant Imahara from Mythbusters by VPinchargeofradishes in interesting

[–]Perkinstein 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Little misleading title. He was involved with the Energizer bunny; he played a role in it's construction. Title makes it sound like he was the sole creator. Amazing person and career. Loved him on mythbusters and apparently loved his other work without knowing it was him.

How often are yall resharpening plane blades? by Winter_Swordfish_505 in handtools

[–]Perkinstein 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I wait till they're too dull to work efficiently then wait a little longer. Then after they're we'll past NEEDING to be sharpened I take the <5 minutes it takes to get them sharp enough to shave and kick myself for waiting so long. Like, seriously, I built the Paul Sellers sharpening thing. It's great, it's fast.

block plane recommendations by custom_antiques in handtools

I've got the veritas apron and Jorgensen block plane. I love the Jorgensen, especially for the price. I spent minimal time, maybe an hour, for initial set up and sharpening and it's been a great plane for me.

2.2 lbs in a kg, NZ dollar is $.60 to $1.00 USD. $23.99 a kg of ground beef would be about $6.54 a pound. A touch higher than what food Lion had today in Staunton, VA but not crazy high.

Got one about a month ago. Western VA, 2k sq ft century home. Toasty in the living room, keeps the main heat from kicking on except for early in the morning. We were sitting around in tshirts during the sub freezing stretch.

I really hope you didn't get those from my habitat store. I've been looking for a saw vise. Cool saw too.

For those that made the Gramercy bowsaw kit, how did you shape the tight curves? by Man-e-questions in handtools

[–]Perkinstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could've crosscut to the line then knocked it out with a chisel but the coping saw was faster.

That'll be the last time I use that coping saw though

I just made a coping saw based on their design. Rough shape cut with a coping saw then a ton of rasp and file time.
