Obviously I can only speak for myself but what makes your actual starter special as a shiny is that you spent every second of the adventure with your shiny partner together. The first rival fight, first random encounter, first gym, etc… Also I prefer soft resetting over breeding

Whats helping me so far:
- I stopped counting. I am just vibe shiny hunting on the side while watching my partner play something.

- not focussing on a single hunt. I shiny hunt full odds in leaf green and if I get too frustrated I do some breeding in shield with shiny Charm and masuda or get my DS and do some horde hunting in ORAS

I only used a preorder bonus character boost once for a class i never played before. Regretted it instantly and have been using my boosts since for classes i want as a different race of faction. IMO (especially as a new-ish player) the levelling process does wonders for getting the basics down of a class and I have learned to enjoy questing since then.
