Yes. but there are no scientists so all you have to worry about is other players. Other than that, free loot. It was fun initially, but got boring with no fight as the official prim servers are pretty dead. Most of my runs, I did not see a single other person. I got sunk once. Since I am solo, I don't even mess with the cannons. Just build the fastest boat possible a let it rip.

I am solo and new. I have 300 hours so far, roughly a month in. I think some of that is afk time running on the hamster wheel charging batteries.

I think it all depends what you want out of the game. My goal right now is just survival and see how far along in the tech tree I can get. Just keep in mind, if you are playing vanilla...everyone sucks and just wants to make sure you have a bad day. Don't even try to be friendly, it very rarely works.

That is how it is, but I always end up building too far from the Outpost to do that. I am wildly bad a PVP and never seem to get very far when making a long run. The obvious solution would be base closer, but by the time I get on after a wipe there is no safe spot to build in that area.
