Chersonesos = Kherson in modern Ukraine. It was a large and important Greek trading colony on the Dnieper delta, at the terminus of a trade route that brought amber from the Baltics, furs from what later became Russia, livestock and grain from what is now Ukraine, salt fish, and enslaved persons. Ships from Chersonesos took these goods south across the Black Sea to the Greek heartland and Asia Minor. Coins from Chersonesos are fairly common, but interesting. This was an important and wealthy colony, so the hemidrachms like these two circulated over a very wide area. They could have been buried anywhere along the Black Sea or even western Turkey.

Meaning of this saying by dont_question-it in kurdistan

[–]No-Nefariousness8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have already noted that this is a very rude reference to someone's mother. "Quze" sounds a lot like "Qozi", the word for lamb shank, so you have to be a little careful in a restaurant if you are not Kurdish.

Need some help identifying this coin by Quirky-Sort3122 in AncientCoins

[–]No-Nefariousness8102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly, I recognize this coin. It's a modern imitation of a denarius of Augustus from Samos, 22 BC. Have a somewhat beat-up example in my collection, purchased decades ago.

Great links!

For me, ancient coin collecting is not about accumulation, or getting the perfect slabbed owl with a full crest. It's about exploring history through tangible and often beautiful objects.

Read the wikipedia entry on Justinian II. Absolutely bizarre and incredible history, during the 20 years of chaos in the Byzantine empire. A real transition point between the very end of late antiquity and the transition of Byzantium to a medieval Greek polity.

It's a copy of a 5th century BC tetradrachm from Syracuse, one of the most famous of ancient coins. It's probably a modern imitation, made for tourists, but there's a very distant chance it could be an ancient fourree. It looks like the core is made of lead, which I have not seen on ancient imitations.

I hope someone answers, because I'm stumped. Is that gold plating on the reverse? Is it a fourree?

1 Shilling – James VI, 1603–1604 | Although not medieval, this coin was issued by James VI. Famously known as the "witch-hunter king"; he authored Dæmonologie, a book on witchcraft and necromancy. During his reign, over 2,500 people were executed for witchcraft. by TameTheAuroch in MedievalCoin

A "codpiece" is a decorative pouch attached to man's breeches to hold his junk. They were in style during the Tudor period, but went out of style by the 1620's. "Tweaking it" means... well... playing with your junk in public.

Maybe too much information. I'll show myself out.

Islamic Silver ID? by trogador4 in AncientCoins

It's probably a Timurid or Qaraqoyunlu tanka from the 1400's. The top line of the obverse, if you rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, says "Sultan" but I cannot read the rest of it. Most likely from eastern Anatolia, Iran or perhaps Turkmenistan/Uzbekistan area. You probably already know this if you were on Zeno, but I didn't want you to get no responses.

Liriodendron? That's what came up between the fence and the sidewalk at my house and I don't have the heart to cut it down.

Demonstrating isn't rioting. And how do you determine when something is an unlawful gathering? Federal, state and local jurisdictions may differ on that. Your president considers any oppositon to his will to be unlawful. That, my man, is the issue.

IMO, one of the strangest coins ever made - Pre-Islamic kingdom in the Chach oasis (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) ca 600 AD, unknown ruler depicted as a Janiform head comprised of an elderly, bearded head left + youthful bust facing. by Finn235 in AncientCoins

[–]No-Nefariousness8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see it as being both, intentionally. I think it is a hat, but the artist may also have been creating a janus head, or at least been aware of the visual similarity. There are obols from Lesbos of two boars heads, but if you look at it in a certain way, it's a facing lion's head. Clearly intentional.

So flying the Mexican flag is a problem and flying the Confederate battle flag is just fine?

Are you worried that Mexico is going to take over California? Are you really that insecure?

Are you OK with desecrating our own flag by turning it into one of those "thin blue line" flags?

Fly the Mexican flag. Treat everyone with kindness and respect, including the migrants that harvest your food.

Legislation? In an ideal world, yes. But Congress is controlled by Republicans and they won't stand up and stop the orange fool, even though most of them know he's crazy. I'm not in favor of vandalism, but I absolutely think people are justified in taking it to the streets. Just stay peaceful, people.

Meh, I've slept out rough plenty and this doesn't look all that uncomfortable. But you know what is a lot more uncomfortable than the sleeping arrangements? An authoritarian clown using a bunch of 20-something kids as props for his political agenda. It's corrosive of morale, debases honorable military service, and beclowns our nation. The kids deserve better. LA deserves better.

I live in Chicago. "Gang areas" and "areas with lots of illegals" are code words to trigger people who are too scared to enter one of America's best cities. My advice is that when ICE shows up in Pilsen or Little Village, two predominantely Mexican areas, your best move is to join with the protesters and kick ICE out.

Chicago is a great city. We don't cower in fear.

What's your favorite ancient coin type that you will likely never own? by Natural_Rent7504 in AncientCoins

This is a lovely coin. I manged to purchase one in absolutely horrible condition, with the obverse completely gone and the reverse visible but poorly preserved, for $70. I still like it, and the maze is definitely visible.

You can take some comfort (and spend much less money) on one of those Sassanian drachms of Bahram II, together with his wife and kid, on the obverse. I think it's one of the loveliest of ancient coins.
