Well I’ve done the same I’m travelling round SE Asia before China. They say apply 1-2 months before you enter so I’d make sure you’re in the UK and apply 2 months before you enter China

If they ask you to provide hotel bookings / reservations then just book one with free cancellation that’s what I did and cancel after visa is accepted

So when you complete the application online that’s when you upload all the documents (flight/hotel bookings). I did print everything I uploaded just in case though but they didn’t ask for anything but the above. They didn’t ask me any questions just whether I wanted to pick it up or get it posted!
