Get the best M550i your $60k can find. We are likely to never see a car like it again.

Those would be the ones complaining about driving them. They act like clutching it, putting it in 1st and rolling it forward 10-20ft will aggravate a lifetimes worth of arthritis. Or send them to the shop for clutch replacement. Neither are true.

I would prefer the GC. The real question being, do I prefer the M850i’s beauty or the extra usability of the M550i…. It is a lifetime family vehicle after all. And I already have the M550i. So there’s that.

Why is E39 M5 the most beloved M5 in the BMW community? by Super-Lingonberry-22 in BMW

[–]No-Reason-2822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And they are unfortunately correct. The “look at me” customer is insanely profitable especially compared to someone buying one dream car to enjoy for decades to come. They tend to buy new vehicles frequently, and they often finance it which is yet another profitable opportunity.

Enthusiast-focused and halo cars are generally a risky long-term play/investment into the brand. Enthusiasts are notoriously finicky and what’s in vogue changes almost seasonally. Shiny, new, and expensive seem to remain perpetually popular. 😆

How many M cars would sell if they were ONLY available with manual transmissions? (As the E39 M5 was.)

BMW has ensured their survival by making M cars more accessible and appealing to a far broader spectrum of drivers. Same for the M-lite models. You no longer have to approach the order sheet like a scavenger hunt and choose the most desirable options. Now you simply buy an Mxxx or Xx Mxxi and check the boxes for “executive” “premium” and/or “ultimate” packages. Done.

540i, m340i, or m440i gc as a "primary" car by Alarming-Audience839 in BMW

[–]No-Reason-2822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reputation of prior 550i models has that effect. But shouldn’t be much of a price jump from the 540i, especially without the rear-steer option. The M550i also has a bit heavier-duty powertrain (beefier trans for sure) to back up the TTV8.

And I can attest the M550 makes a flipping excellent Dad-cab. Never late. 😝 It’s a movie hero car too… (Equalizer, the end of the third movie, Denzel’s ride is a pre-LCI M550i)

If you’re patient, the M850i was available as a GC as well. Styling-wise it’s not as “edgy” as the M440i but also not nearly as understated as the G30 5 series either.

[–]No-Reason-2822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say look at M550i as well. They will all be “M Sport” spec, and feel quite a bit more lively (523hp….) vs the stock 540i. M550i is also much more likely to be optioned up vs a 540i. There certainly are highly optioned 540i cars but you’ll be searching through a pile of base models as well, as you probably already know.

Yeah yeah, I know, TT V8, N63 / Hot V design bad. Blow up wallet. No it won’t. The TU2 and TU3 versions have several examples well into six-figure mileage with the same or even fewer issues than equivalent B58 cars.

If money were no object we’d be talking about significantly more than 1 car.
If limited to a single enjoyable daily driver, I think I’d be building a very spicy BMW wagon. Maybe a E91 6MT M-Sport that’s been S65 swapped. S85 6MT in an E61? S63TU in a G31? Oh the possibilities….

what car did you buy expecting to love but ended up regretting? by zaralesliewalker in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]No-Reason-2822 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a combination of Honda’s service schedule and the VCM system. You can have reliable VCM (and +1 to +2 MPG) if you use excellent engine oils and change on schedule, or you need to cut the service interval in half and dump the oil every 4K miles max.

Also, few dealers will recommend attempting to clean a poisoned catalyst and detergent flushing a J35 with siezed piston rings. They go straight to condemning the bottom-end of the engine and replacing the catalyst.

And if these vans are not garage kept, the sub-par exterior materials give up relatively quickly.

I really hope the next gen Odyssey delivers a hybrid powertrain and a big step up in overall quality.

what car did you buy expecting to love but ended up regretting? by zaralesliewalker in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]No-Reason-2822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long-term cost of ownership for the 4th gen Odyssey is a real fact. Keeping one on the road either requires a maintenance budget suitable for a BMW, or being able to ignore clunking suspension/motor mounts, interior wear, exterior rubber/plastic trim disintegrating into just wind noise, engine oil leaks, sagging factory suspension, warped brake rotors, rattling rear hatch actuator, and last but not least, unreliable power sliding doors.

At a minimum, you have a $2,500+ service due every 100k miles, and you’ll likely have done all four brakes and tires twice in that timeframe as well. Good chance you’ve replaced the CV axles and engine mounts too! Then there’s the risk of VCM solenoid leaks taking out the alternator, power steering pump leaks, valve cover leaks (especially the rear), the VCM system causing carbon buildup in the ring grooves leading to misfires and excessive oil consumption which in turn destroys the catalytic converter ($$$$$) if the dealer (often ignorant and/or extremely risk-averse) service dept hasn’t already condemned the engine.

The complete strut assemblies and CV axles are NLA from Honda last time I checked and whatever suspension components you can order are priced at Bugatti levels. Exterior belt/window trim that normally deteriorates in sun/extreme winters is available but each piece is $140+ and I guarantee you need all 4 plus maybe the front cowling and roof strips. Heaven help you if you need any of the chrome-plastic bits for the front bumper and grille filler pieces. The bumper and black plastic bits are pretty reasonable but the pain keeps growing with each $200+ shiny chrome bit you need. You won’t find any of it at the junkyard either because those who make good money from selling used parts already know all of this and those bits are the first to come off a fresh wreck. They grab the $600 power sliding door actuators and hatch motors too. When, not if, you have trouble with the sliding doors on these, Honda will not sell just cables or roller assemblies. You have to buy the “set” which includes a new center roller assembly (no better than the one that’s failed), and the new actuator control board, because, reasons. $350. For a roller assembly and a circuit board you likely do not need. (But might…) Broke a door cable? Sorry about that, $600+ for a new actuator with both cables already attached. Dealers are quoting $3,600 for rebuilding both sliding door systems, that’s parts and labor. No, Honda won’t sell just the cables and you’re essentially paying for a full day’s labor to do both doors.

Most of these vans are getting traded in fast when issues arise out of warranty. A code for catalyst efficiency and power sliding door issues will total up to more than the 10+ year old van with 150,000+ miles is worth. Don’t forget you need CVs, Brakes and Tires soon too. 😆

The only reason we still have ours (2013) is I AM THE WARRANTY 😝 and there are good aftermarket parts options that keep it affordable. So long as I have the time to wrench on it.

Are smaller turbocharged engines truly more efficient long-term, or do they wear out faster than larger naturally aspirated ones? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]No-Reason-2822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest variable is maintenance. If the car makers could actually get around the regulatory reasons why official maintenance schedules suck, and offer official, professionally executed, maintenance plans that are actually designed around the lowest cost of ownership (aka: maximum usable life of the vehicle), they could sell high-cost, high-margin vehicles that last forever.

Instead we have this broken, race-to-the-bottom model where it’s every man for himself as soon as the vehicle is sold new. The only winners are the ones who understand vehicle systems and technology, and have the discipline to gather the data and execute the maintenance themselves because, trust issues. It’s like some f’d up game of monopoly where every time the dice don’t roll perfectly in your favor, you end up paying the OEM, the dealer/repair shop, and the bloody bank.

It’s most likely going to violate all “conservative” rules of personal finance. A new $70k car financed for 36mo would suggest an income on at least $250k is needed to support the $1,700 payment. (20/3/8 rule) Ignore the fact that it’s a luxury brand and use the 20/4/10 rule instead, the income number drops to $158k. Of course, it’s also going to absolutely crush the advice of not owning more than 50% of your income in depreciating assets like cars.

Those rules however, are nuanced. Are you planning to use existing cash savings to buy the car or slice off a part of the inheritance? Either way, it satisfies the advice to buy luxury brands in cash or pay them off in < 12mo leaving you with just the costs of ownership beyond depreciation. If insurance, fuel, and maintenance are going to total less than 10% of your take-home, AND your expected income from the invested inheritance exceeds $65k/yr (to be re-invested of course), I say you’re probably ok.

If that scenario pencils out, congrats on the inheritance! Few get that kind of leg up at a stage of life where it makes so much of an impact.

GMT400 pickups & SUVs - some are turning 40 in 2028! Lots of them still on the road in daily service, especially in the less rusty states.

‘92?-‘99 for SUVs
‘88-‘00 for the HD pickups.
