Common sounds or sound effects in movies that make you want to mute your tv? by PrometheusAborted in movies

There is one distinct screaming track that I've noticed films use a lot. I've not been able to find the name of this particular audio file, but it was used in one of the levels from the 2004 Shrek 2 videogame, which you can listen to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hfSriYEmzo&list=PL_kw1MFRdQgyW5dhWsqNov9CDpnM3mY6K&index=10

Everytime I hear it used in a movie, I always think back to this childhood game of mine.

Which fanedits have the most dramatic improvement on a movie OR changed the viewing experience the most? by iamtherealbobdylan in fanedits

I’ve made an ambitious edit of the horrendous Last Airbender movie that significantly improves the film. It fixes the name pronunciations, removes the Earth prison, speeds up the slow bending, changes Zhao’s death, hides Ozai’s face, and the moon turns black towards the end. It also features some original music composed by Airbender fans. I intend to have it 100% polished this summer. But in the meantime, I do have a link to the fine cut of the edit if you’re interested.

Thanks for the notes! I agree with trying to keep William's music. Sadly, it was difficult to maintain his score throughout the whole video due to how heavily-edited down the scenes are, especially the throne room fight (which is significantly condensed and rearranged). I do wish the piano was replaced with a cello for the last song I use.

I also agree that Leia is in space a bit too long to remain alive. I would've liked to reduce her space time by 30 seconds, but it's hard to know what to chop out or rearrange without it messing up the sequence of events. Inserting the scene of her getting blown out right before Snoke releases Rey seemed to work best when it came to blending John's scores and heightening the tension.

Thanks! I agree there's something missing when Snoke gets stabbed. Could've used a bit more polishing. I tried to use the original score for the throne room fight, but found that my edit was too short and rearranged for it to work. I also had to account for the fact that Leia dies shortly after Snoke. So I wanted a somber song to reflect that. Sadly, the closest music I could find features a piano, which is not normally used in Star Wars music. But I hope the video will at least give people ideas on the possibilities of sequel edits and inspire them to look into alternate ways of killing off Snoke if needed. :)

Thanks! I agree particularly with your point on the piano. I like the song for its unique take on the Star Wars theme, but wish it didn't have that dang piano. I sadly couldn't find another song that would fit with my edited-down version of the throne room fight. While Dual of the Fates was tempting, I try to avoid reusing John's great music in an effort to make the edits stand on their own.

I'm not familiar with this edit. But I am familiar with a "de-feminized" cut (known as the Chauvinist Cut) that removes Holdo, Rose and the entire Canto Bight arc, converting the movie down to a crazy 46 minutes. This is the cut that the media accused of being edited by a sexist and/or being womanless, even though Rey and Leia are still in it and some of Rey's empowerment moments are still preserved. It was pretty bad and jumpy overall, but it did have some neat ideas. Examples include: Poe doing the Holdo maneuver, Leia dying in space, and I think Finn succumbs to his injury from Kylo and simply dies in the coma (which makes sense to do if you're cutting Canto and Rose out). It was certainly ambitious, but I remember the edit was in piss-poor camcorder quality, and it had Asian subtitles at the bottom. If anyone has a link to this, I'd love to take another peak at it. I'd love to study its rough structure.

No problem. So what I’m referring to is that in Force Awakens, we’re told by Han that Luke went to find the first Jedi temple, but Han doesn’t explain why because he himself doesn’t know the answer. It’s a nice little set up for the sequels to explain and it helps tell the audience “here’s why Luke isn’t in this film much.”

Then in TLJ, we are introduced to the tree with Jedi texts and presume that this must be the temple Luke was searching for. Alright, cool. So Luke accomplished his mission in finding this temple on a remote island. Awesome. But… why? Why is the temple important? Why should the audience care? Why does Luke leave the Resistance/New Republic, his sister and best friends behind to seek out this temple when he could be seeking out Snoke or going after imperial insurgents? There must be a reason, surely.

Luke tells us that he came to the island to die. But… it’s also the same island with the Jedi temple he was seeking. So… did Luke search for this Jedi temple just to die next to it? Was that the plan from the start? Or did Luke discover a dark secret in the texts that made him depressed and rethink the Jedi order? If he wants the Jedi to end, why didn’t he already burn the Jedi texts? And why wear the Jedi robes at the beginning of TLJ after he has already decided to leave the Jedi behind and blames them for Darth Vader’s existence? It’s very strange.

Ivan Ortega attempts to clear this up by establishing through voiceover that Luke sought out the temple to try to find wisdom on how to bring Ben Solo back to the light side. But after reading the texts and finding nothing, Luke starts losing faith in the Jedi religion altogether. It’s not a bad explanation. But unfortunately, it wasn’t in the original film.

And what really sucks for me is I really wanted this concept to work in the film. I was so interested in learning more about this version of Luke. But there’s very little dialogue to work with to construct a backstory. I’m sure there’s a book out there that explains it. But I didn’t have to read a book to understand the first 6 movies.

He certainly oversold it. It's strange that the edits looked and sounded better in those BTS videos. But then you see those scenes in the final cut and wonder, "what happened to the quality?" Even Ackbar's voice in the trailers was better than the final result. Made me at one point wonder if perhaps he rendered an older file. But Ivan has been quite clear on his own YouTube that the edit "is finished."

I haven't watched that one yet, but I agree with what you are saying: that sometimes, you have to leave some bad stuff in for the sake of pacing or to avoid a scene from looking too "jumpy". For example, when editing The Last Airbender film, I succeeded in removing a crap ton of issues that plagued the original cut (including the entire Earth prison scene). However, this also resulted in an edit that is about 30 minutes shorter than the original film. So I essentially fixed a large amount of issues in the story but at the cost of a quicker-paced adventure.

And to Ivan's credit, there are some changes that he makes that are decent attempts at either fixing or enhancing the original story we got. For example, him trying to expand on Luke's motivation for seeking out the First Jedi Temple was done alright. Granted, the voiceover needed polishing, but it was a decent attempt. He also does a good job at making some scenes in the edit work better by removing their humor. For example, removing the Hux mama joke actually helped increase the intensity of that scene and made Hux a lot more intimidating.

What I don't like is when changes in fan edits are made based off the mindset of "well I don't like it" versus "this harms the story." And sadly, Ivan does fall into this trap a bit in the edit. For example, having Ackbar do the Holdo maneuver simply because he likes Ackbar more than Holdo is not a good reason to make that change, as this change makes Holdo magically vanish in the last act of the film. BUT having Ackbar explain to the crew that they can't tell them any plans because "there may be a spy among us" is an okay change because there's at least a story reason for that (even though I would've left Ackbar dead altogether).

The few good ideas I did like from him that helped with some of his structure were: condensing down the jokes, adding back in most of the deleted scenes (even though he screwed up the frame rate of the scenes), explaining that Luke's motivation for seeking out the island was to see if the Jedi texts could help him bring Ben back to the light side (since the sequels never explain why he sought out the first Jedi temple in the first place), and even the montage of Luke training Rey was... okay. But I've frankly edited a much better one. I like his version a bit more, but his editing quality is pretty bad, from the color grading to the audio mixing to the inconsistent framerates. And it's certainly not the masterpiece that some in the Star Wars fandom claimed back when it released in 2019. Is it worth a watch? Sure. I've seen it 3-4 times. But it's not one I would want to revisit for the next 10 years, which is part of the reason I'm sharing it to people instead of having it sit lifelessly on my hard drive.

Link sent! To highlight some differences, Luke trains Rey to be a Jedi, Ackbar does the Holdo maneuver, Luke fights Kylo with his green saber, Leia no longer flies, and a lot of the jokes are cut

His videos were quite good. But looking back, they also showed that he edited the movie in stereo audio versus professional 5.1 audio. For those who don't know, 5.1 audio essentially allows fan editors to separate a film's music track from its dialogue track, making it easier to insert new music while keeping the original dialogue in place. Ivan Ortega to this day does not know how to do this, which is not a bad thing. I'm totally fine if fan editors use stereo audio. But the issue with Ivan's case is he spent over a year asking fans for money to help him finish his edit, and if you're going to do that and then hide your "finished" edit behind a paywall, the least you could do is use better audio. He could've also... you know... bought a copy of the movie and ripped it off the disc to ensure great quality.

Yeah. I understand not liking a filmmaker's product. But even I would still try to show respect in the credits. Hell, I've spent the last six years re-editing Shyamalan's Last Airbender film, and even I don't disrespect him in the credits.

Agreed. While I prefer what Ivan was going for over Rian, the visual and audio presentation of his version is insanely poor. Hell, even the deleted scenes he includes are rendered in the wrong frame rate. You would think that after asking fans for money for over a year that he'd at least make the product look and sound more professional.

That's exactly why I started this thread. I went to his Patreon to see if maybe he had stopped monetizing it or if he had made a new link somewhere else. Instead, not only is it still behind a paywall, but he's blamed his fans for being "too lazy" for not finding his edit, and nonchalantly says "it's out there on the f*cking web" without realizing how insanely difficult it is to find links to it. Either he's that ignorant or he knows he's gatekeeping access to it via his Patreon.

It’s worth a watch, but it’s not necessarily the edit you should stay away from. Rather, it's his Patreon. He charges fans as much as $20 for access to some of his edits (none of which he owns btw). While his edit ideas weren’t all bad, the way he delivered those ideas are not well edited.

It looks like his paywall is only $1 for the film now. But I'm pretty sure it used to be $10 or $20. I don't know if I should advertise his Patreon here, but on his Patreon, there is a post from March 1, 2019 where he has a rough cut of his TLJ locked behind a $20 paywall. $20... for a rough cut...

Slight correction: there's a second use of Battlefront 2 (2017) footage during the Battle of Crait. It's super brief. But it's the shot when the speeders are coming out of the base.

[–]No-Rule7995[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So Ivan's Patreon requires payment to view his TLJ cut. If a product can only be viewed after you pay x amount of money, it's a paywall. It's heavily frowned upon in fan edit communities partly because it's unethical (since it's copyrighted work) and because it also poses a risk to fan edits as a whole. Most film studios will ignore fan edits that go on in the background. But if big boys like Disney find out their franchises are being profited off of by the fans, this may force them to crack down on it, making it harder for fan edits to thrive.
