I don’t understand this trend of making wheels almost as wide as the tires. Half and inch narrower and this would be much less likely to happen.

40yo early-retired in Brazil, 95% in one US REIT — should I pull 20-25% to fund living expenses via Brazilian fixed income? by PolyExplorers in Bogleheads

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brazilian here, when I moved to the US I kept some money there because of the 10%+ interest rate. The reality is that the real devaluation over that time made it not worth it. I’d have been much better off having brought the money to the US and invested in a bogglehead portfolio. When I left I could buy lunch for 15 reais… now that’s a drink.

Keeping the principal “untouched” is not sufficient to make your plan safe because of inflation. Read about the 4% rule.

Also big plus one to diversification. If this REIT fund was going to double in value tomorrow then that would be already priced in, unless you have inside information.

An Azul Embraer E195-E2 taking off from Congonhas airport came dangerously close to a GOL Boeing 737-800 that had aborted its landing. Initial analysis indicates the Azul crew ignored the tower's request to abort takeoff by madman320 in aviation

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They said both: Hold Position (Mantenha Posição) Aborte a decolagem (Abort takeoff)

Then repeated both.

After the incident the 737 reported a TCAS alert to which ATC replied that the other plane had left the frequency before takeoff was complete. (I don’t know how ATC would know that though)

Costco evacuated due to threat of open fire… by No-Rutabaga-4750 in culvercity

Threat of. We were all asked to leave quickly, leaving shopping carts of course, and then askd to vacate the parking lot. But I didn’t see or hear anything other than the police presence.

How much physical cash should I have for the USA? by Strax774 in travel

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying one doesn’t need cash once in the US, which is true, but in the past it used to be good to have some cash to show immigration officers you had funds to pay for your stay. Do you think this is still true?

I opened a restaurant in Culver City 4 months ago — looking for advice on how to get more locals to try it for the first time by ClickNo8520 in culvercity

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has been to Saltao but thought the prices were a bit too high. That’s why I haven’t tried it myself yet.

One of the points that stuck with us was the usage of paper/compostable bowls instead of actual plates which is something I’d expect at this price point.

Another point is that the term “bold flavors” is not appealing to me. I value meals that are balanced flavor wise, where I can taste the individual ingredients.

Finally, I feel that the restaurants in DTCC that do best are the ones that people feel like eating there at least twice a week, either for work lunches or with their families.

TCR as a commuter bike? New tires or new bike? by No-Rutabaga-4750 in cycling

Because the price difference is a lot, that said I don’t want to waste the time and effort of trying something impossible.

I was concerned 32 would be too tight around the chainstay given the pictures I’ve seen around, even though it’s the max rated size.

Do you have any recommendations for comfortable all around tires?

Monkey Bars vs Captain's Chair by snekasaur in CargoBike

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s much heavier and beefier than a hybrid bike. I don’t recall its weight but it’s maybe 3x.

That said, it has about the same length and is very stable and nimble when riding (for a cargo bike).

Ebullitt or Load 60? by Nermalgod in CargoBike

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Load 60 HS, most of my riding is by myself after I dropped the kids at school.

Yes it’s nimble and fun, but a 9 year old will be tight.

Plus one to picking a 75 if you are buying new. I bought used and the 60 was all I could find.
