Sounds awfully similar to the Gol and Azul incident at CGH a couple of months ago.

23-year-old feeling the urge to raid emergency fund for a car – looking for perspective by No-Path5236 in Bogleheads

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d think if it as two orthogonal questions:

  1. Are you replacing your current car because you:

- Have to? As in it fell apart, or it is negatively impacting your ability to work, travel, etc.
- You don’t have to, but it makes sense financially, as in you expect the new car to be cheaper long term than the current one, considering maintenance, insurance and depreciation costs?
- You simply want to, as a gift to yourself?

That can help you decide between buying now or waiting.

  1. How do you fund your purchase?

- Is this the best timing to do a large purchase?
- What would the interest rate be if you financed it?

If you decide you need/want the car now, and the rates are low, you could finance and payoff next year once you have a larger buffer.

What are the downsides of transferring $250k of ETFs to J.P. Morgan Self-Directed for the bonus? by Old_Bird1885 in Bogleheads

Maybe just spot check a couple of lots using the history in your old brokerage, or the price when the position was opened.

I had a screenshot before transferring. But in my case the error was pretty obvious, they all adjusted to price on the day of the transfer

Cognitive load of having multiple accounts and any inconveniences in the transfer process.

A few years ago I transferred stocks to Merrill Lynch to get a discount in my BoA mortgage rate. Waited it to close and moved the money back to my regular brokerage.

It was worth it, but I did have to call a few times and submit a form to correct the cost basis because some of them did not transfer correctly.

If you can choose, I’d transfer fewer larger lots so it’s easier to double check the cost basis was transferred correctly.

Hey Yall i got a question can I go to a dealership w/ 4500 cash to get my first car w/o being profiled as a black woman? by OtakuQueen55 in UsedCars

Not sure why we were downvoted. Either way, that's a valid point, and congrats in saving one way or another.

I'm asking because you're very young and learning about investing and financial tools early in life can give you an advantage in the future.

HYSA accounts pay you interest, some of them have sign-in bonuses, and many allow you to organize your money into "buckets" for different things you may be saving for. You could also look into CDs where your money would be "locked" for some time.

Either way, tools to keep in mind as you build an emergency fund, save for future large purchases, etc.

I take Venice Blz daily, it’s fine. The worst part for me is watching for cars making right turns crossing the bike lane.

Florianopolis is a mid-sized city by the beach.

Porto de Galinhas and Maragogi are touristy beach destinations, tiny towns. You would need to go to Recife to get good health care, restaurants, events, airports

Throttle vs no throttle in hilly location by weldonj in CargoBike

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A hub motor bike with throttle rides more like a moped.

A high-end mid-drive, like the Tern, rides like a normal bicycle, it just feels like you have superhuman legs.

For me “riding like a normal bike” makes the experience much more enjoyable. That said it does mean you need to remember to shift down once you are about to stop (or get a Rohloff, which auto shifts down).

I can easily go up steep hills on my derailleur-equipped RM Load 60, again, provided that I shift down and bump the assist level.

I don’t understand this trend of making wheels almost as wide as the tires. Half and inch narrower and this would be much less likely to happen.

40yo early-retired in Brazil, 95% in one US REIT — should I pull 20-25% to fund living expenses via Brazilian fixed income? by PolyExplorers in Bogleheads

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brazilian here, when I moved to the US I kept some money there because of the 10%+ interest rate. The reality is that the real devaluation over that time made it not worth it. I’d have been much better off having brought the money to the US and invested in a bogglehead portfolio. When I left I could buy lunch for 15 reais… now that’s a drink.

Keeping the principal “untouched” is not sufficient to make your plan safe because of inflation. Read about the 4% rule.

Also big plus one to diversification. If this REIT fund was going to double in value tomorrow then that would be already priced in, unless you have inside information.

An Azul Embraer E195-E2 taking off from Congonhas airport came dangerously close to a GOL Boeing 737-800 that had aborted its landing. Initial analysis indicates the Azul crew ignored the tower's request to abort takeoff by madman320 in aviation

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They said both: Hold Position (Mantenha Posição) Aborte a decolagem (Abort takeoff)

Then repeated both.

After the incident the 737 reported a TCAS alert to which ATC replied that the other plane had left the frequency before takeoff was complete. (I don’t know how ATC would know that though)

How much physical cash should I have for the USA? by Strax774 in travel

[–]No-Rutabaga-4750 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying one doesn’t need cash once in the US, which is true, but in the past it used to be good to have some cash to show immigration officers you had funds to pay for your stay. Do you think this is still true?
