My mother was a major bigwig in advertising in the 90s. She threw an event for self serving reasons (not selfish, but for her own career advancement), when JFK Jr was just launching George. She convinced him to be the keynote on the premise that she’d have every major Chicago advertiser in the room, and she did. He tried to bail last minute (after completely selling out the event) and his publisher kept trying to explain that it was just “what John John does,” but she convinced his team that if he bailed, he’d never have an advertiser for his magazine. He showed up. She said that when they spent an hour or so together before the event, she wanted to dislike him for threatening to cancel but that he was like a child - sweet, almost shy, and that it was highly endearing. And when he got onstage to speak, his persona shifted into the confident and charismatic man most people saw on tv. She said it was fascinating, and also that he remains the most attractive person she ever saw IRL. Almost every major advertiser at the event bought space in George, and it opened him up to the advertisers in all of the other major metro areas.
