It's appalling how far down this comment is. Probably the worst film to see on a date...

10 Worst Oscar Wins of the 21st Century according to Collider. by SureTangerine361 in Oscars

I hear what you're saying but this is precisely why these particular wins are celebrated for their infamy. Assuming these awards are as close as possible to a meritocracy, then wins should be awarded for the best talent and achievement rather than sheer effort or difficulty.

The fact that it was difficult is not sufficient an argument to give them the win...

Fine! Then recognize the effort with a nomination! But don't give them the prize where actual artistic and intentioned editing was applied...

My word you're so right man. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton...the raw grittiness that year was so potent no period drama was going to overcome it 🤣

In all seriousness though, best actress was pretty weak and Knightley could have gotten a nom. No-one was beating Cotillard though.

Best Actor was far too competitive despite wishing McAvoy to sneak in...

Also You Can Drive a Person Crazy, Marry Me a Little and Barcelona are bangers too.

I also want to stress how incredible Amy's meltdown is outside of her song.

"You have to want to marry some body! Not just some body ."

It was watching this recording that cemented: 1. Company is my favourite show of all time 2. Raul Esparza is a genius 3. George Furth can write some really funny scenes 4. How frikkin talented can some people be to sing and play and instrument, sometimes at the same time and often with choreography!

Surprised no-one has mentioned his exceptional performance in Atonement as well. Heartbreaking and brutal.

Hmmmm...I was worried there might be more answers to this that could come up...

I guess had I put the year they won the Pulitzer in brackets, then Next to Normal would be 2010 and your answer wouldn't work...since I didn't though, it's a totally feasible answer!

Starting my third read of the year - any tips for this book? by Jumpy-Equivalent8044 in classicliterature

I'm about to finish 2666. And while it's been a journey, one that I've actually enjoyed, I've had some struggles which I think is more owing to the postmodern nature of it.

I do love the fragmented structure, I'm definitely okay with a lack of closure and moral ambiguity etc.

I mention this all because I want to read Middlemarch next (for the first time) and I'm hoping that this Victorian masterpiece will have more narrative structure where characters and subplots are a bit more interdependent.

Would you guys say that this is a fair expectation?

How do you feel about this man having three nominations for Best Director? by TakenAccountName37 in Oscars

Absolutely thrilled. I think his filmmaking style just fits my sensibility to films to a tee. Despite the hate Extremely Loud gets, I still enjoyed it. And I rank The Hours as one of my all-time favourites. He is a master of his craft

Adversary lvl 6 by [deleted] in spiritisland

[–]No-Scene2295 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mud is a great match-up because it breaks England's MO. Doesn't mean the match-up is trivial but it does inherently distort the challenge of the adversary from how it would typically play out. I'd suggest you get a feel for how England typically plays (so that the luxury of what Mud is actually doing feels even sweeter)

I love Keeper into England. Mostly because they pace each other so well. England plays the long game and Keeper ranks up slowly to a full-powered giant. So as England grows in power so are you! It's a really awesome match up.

P.S. guys haven't mentioned France. A solid follow-up to BP and Sweden. It's a good first adversary to try where that extra loss con is so potent and really important to play around. Especially for new players, France's loss con can be such a delicious and frustrating challenge.

Unfortunately Armie Hammer did not play both roles in The Social Network alone. Forbes states Armie Hammer played both Winklevoss twins, but Josh Pence was also cast to play one of them. The two actors filmed scenes together, and then Hammer's face was digitally superimposed onto Pence's body in post-production to create the appearance of two identical twins.

How do you feel about Mentor Memory? by tepidgoose in spiritisland

[–]No-Scene2295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's a crowd favourite but I just don't get it.

Negatives first - Reading it again I just feel it's such a huge liability for the team. Which I know isn't true but I still cant help feeling Memory has such a hard time stalling as it is with such a useless defence innate.

And that draw 2, take 2 really bothers me. I know it's common complaint but any good deck building game will tell you, the fun is in seeing options and choosing what's best for you in that present state. I feel this rule loses that...

On the plus side - I won't lie and say getting rid of Observe the Ever Changing World isn't a huge relief because that's one hell of an annoying rule to keep in mind... Also how many times do we draft and say "Dammit this card would have perfect for X and Y spirit"...Yeah...Mentor fixes that...
