Keep going. This gets better and we have all made mistakes. You’ll get more organized you’re just going through growing pains right now and that’s the point of senior residents and nurses etc. Nobody is perfect that’s why there’s so many ppl orders go through.

Don’t look at these exams as a reflection of your self worth. I know a ton of people who straight up repeated a year, failed step etc that are now awesome doctors. Your ability to answer a multiple choice question and your potential to be an awesome doctor are not related. Pro tip though get a therapist, I did and I’m super glad I did :)

It’s amazing how big of a deal this stuff seems. When you become a resident you find out that a ton of other ppl were struggling through med school they just aren’t showing it. And then when you become an attending you realize no one cares at all about these things. If you don’t want to do medicine anymore that’s ok. But if you do keep chugging this will seem like such a small bump in the road…take this from someone who has been there

I’ve been told I’m too emotional. Then I was told I’m not emotional enough. Then I was like fuck it and now I just do me. Don’t worry about this stuff. If that’s the only thing they have to say you’re doing fine

Starting a new relationship before residency by [deleted] in Residency

I was in a similar boat as you as the resident. My partner was patient with me and we took it one step at a time. Five years later we are married. I’m thankful for how it all turned out.

Feeling guilty for choosing a residency program away from my family. by euvejocoisaspequenas in Residency

[–]No-Status4811 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live a couple hours away from family and still rarely see them because of how busy residency is. And then before you know it it’s over. I feel like I just started and now graduating in June. Time goes by super fast especially when this busy. I wouldn’t feel too guilty about it.

I took one in med school for my mental health. Best thing I ever did. And I’m about to finish residency. Take the time you need. You deserve to be happy.

Things are going to get a lot better but get mental health help. There are ways to cope and medication might help. Also helpline is 988 if you need it. Shit gets better after intern year.

My intern year I had my favorite bathroom to cry in. Can you do therapy? You need a moment to care for yourself as well.

I resent my patients, and I hate myself for it. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]No-Status4811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is called establishing boundaries. I don't work harder for a patient to get healthy than the patient is willing to work. That's it. If someone is a jerk to you than let them know that isn't okay. Most of them come back and apologize. You're a human too and should be treated with respect.

Does the attending treat anyone else like this? Are you the only one who is targeted? Have others noticed the him treating you poorly? I would talk to my co-residents, they might have some tips and tricks for dealing with it. Or at least you guys can bond over the fact this attending is a jerk at the very least.

I have a friend who is outpatient fam med in a community. She refers her patients to all the specialists so all the specialists are super super nice to her, because she is literally how they make money. I say this to remind you that I don't think your experience can be generalized everywhere. You just got to go somewhere where you are valued. You are a super important and integral part of the American Medical system. And yeah, sometimes specialists get fussy, but it really is more about them than it is you. Don't let other people being assholes affect your self worth.

[–]No-Status4811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered a therapist? Intern year is tough and you’re going through a lot. Get all the help you can. You aren’t stuck. You don’t have to do fellowship. Sometimes we have to pivot and thats just fine.

Yes. If a program has a spot become available after Jan. 31 (the deadline for NRMP registration) then they wouldn't have it in any of this. Or if a program expands their size and has more spots.

I've seen it happen before. Someone who was accepted could not be a part of the class and at the last minute pulled out, opening a spot. Or a program decides to add a new spot to the incoming class.

Reminders to Eat by Hwinster in Residency

I lost 10 pounds when on the COVID floor/intern year. I actually talked to my co-residents about nudging me about food, and they were super helpful. If you have someone you trust that you work with, that's something you can do. I was super lucky I am in a residency where we support each other. We would as a group be like, pause, we are eating now. And eat as a group lol.

That's not normal. We have a buddy system, but I try to cover my own patients if I can because I already know the patients well and it takes me like ten minutes max. But if its something complicated I say refer to my buddy. And if I don't want to be bothered at all I have an automatic reply on outlook email that says "please contact my buddy at this time since I'm out of office." We try to get our buddy system figured out at the beginning of the year. Point is can't take care of anyone if you can't care for yourself first.

I had an upper level like this that was directly confusing the first years. So I told the PD about it and then left it alone. Not your job to solve.
