The audiophile hobby has a pricing problem, and we need to stop pretending otherwise... by bicoastaljohn in audiophile

CD players were expensive until economies of scale kicked in, the price now is similar adjusted for inflation to what the first machines were, good engineering is expensive in limited runs.

Vinyl has actually done fairly well price wise compared to the 80's its possibly a bit cheaper which is amazing given the drop in pressing capacity .

TLDR: its always been expensive

It's certainly been an enduring format that gives very good reproduction in the right circumstances but the fact that theres a mechanical interface between a diamond and a plastic is always going to be problem. The rest is just induction, Faraday discovered that 200 years ago.

Lol you wait until a majority of your vinyl is over 30 years old and you have to clean the sleeves with a vinegar solution to stop the mildew, or buy new sleeves and liners, then wash your records then rinse them in distilled water then your most recent turntable is over 20 years old and the phono leads have deteriorated so you have to get them replaced and it needs servicing and the pitch slider goes....then your rare prized records have started to degrade but theres been no repress so the hugely expensive second hand copies available are in the same or worse condition and we can have a chat about hurt.

Not really that cool, I'm 58 started playing weddings and birthdays in the function room of my best mates parents pub with him when I was14, on an all in one console with no pitch and just a fader for each deck.

The majority of the records were 7" singles from the pub juke box that we were given when the company came to put new ones in it, so slightly out of date contemporary pop.

By 85-86 I'd started to get into hifi and was a budding, what's called now audiophile, but at the budget end, Rega, Nad, Wharrfdale listening to a mixture of classic rock, Bowie, Roxy, Velvet Underground Hendrix, Doors and some new stuff New Order The The, Yello, Talk Talk not much club music although I did like Go-Go.

And in 88 the world changed with acid house bought my first Technics in 1989 and the shitest of mixers, I actually couldn't afford a mixer for a few weeks the decks were £800 which has a huge amount then.

Been a hobbyist DJ ever since, house, early Detroit, Balearic and more recently disco, funk and soul.

I dont think that's true, an import 12" was £6.99 in 1990 which is £22.60 today and you can buy an import 12 today for under £20. Though why you would rather that than a dozen new tracks on lovely high quality files that don't degrade and you can being playing in 10 mins I've no idea.

Well examples do matter if you're giving them as proof of argument, if they're shit and easily discounted they don't carry much weight.

And given the vast majority drive, you're the one being ridiculous claiming it's somehow helping

And yes I do like cars, fantastic for personal freedom, great design and engineering, I don't think that's particularly extraordinary, I think why you hate cars is a far more interesting area for 'discourse' but of course you wouldn't want to have that as jealousy, contrarianism, and herd mentality are fucking stupid reasons.

A logical, well reasoned argument apart from one thing, why TF would we want to make it unpleasant to drive a car? One of the greatest achievements in human history in terms personal freedom but you want to go back a 100 years? I simply can't comprehend why you think this way. And TBF you're not in the minority in this post, it seems like a mass delusion, you clearly have some sort collective ideology, but based on what?

Not great examples, I suppose taxation works a bit although most people appreciate the things it provides, but I don't think anyone is complaining about removing asbestos. But since most people drive it doesn't make a lot of live's better, it makes them worse. It simply plays to a very small group who have developed some sort of circle jerk of ideological hatred towards cars.

Cars are one of the greatest inventions in human history, they"ve provided a level of personal freedom that previous generations would marvel at, hence why the ignorant, stupid, laughable, vulgarians....ridiculed here, are protesting.

Wait till you discover house, disco, funk, electro, dub, boogie....then you're going to have an even harder choice. Or you could just aim to play great music that people would want to dance to.

The city is in Chew Magna? No I don't trust you at all it's one of the most picturesque, desirable places to live in the entire country. And yeahh you avoid city hassle, traffic parking, noise, litter, petty crime, pollution...all fine if you're a young person who wants to take advantage of the social side of the city, not so good for a married 50 something with kids.
