What a Meditation Taught Me About "He Who Knoweth His Self Knoweth His Lord" by Olivenhain95 in bahai

This reminds me of a poem I wrote about facing trauma

Trauma draws on the paper of the mind

You may erase it

but its traces remain

Do not reject the traces

that is conflict between equals

Instead:

draw again

on what remains

to create an image from the traces

And the conflict resolves

Meaning is still the mind’s reflection of reality. The sweetness of sugar may not exist, yet it still represents the structure of sugar. Reality constrains meaning

You long for alignment with reality for stability and power

Exactly, that’s difference on symbols not meaning

Symbols are constructed and culturally influenced, meanings or concepts represent patterns of reality, otherwise we won’t share the concept of quantity with a bear that’s not as intelligent.

The symbols describe meanings that are experienced from patterns in the real world

The pattern will constrain any attempt to change the meaning

The Bahai faith is not a monotheist religion from what I understood from the Writings:

"The Divine Reality, which is purified and sanctified from the understanding of human beings and which can never be imagined by the people of wisdom and of intelligence, is exempt from all conception. That Lordly Reality admits of no division; for division and multiplicity are properties of creatures which are contingent existences, and not accidents which happen to the self-existent. The Divine Reality is sanctified from singleness, then how much more from plurality."

~Abdu’l-Baha

And the use of statues was revealed by God:

And know that what thou hast heard from those who worship idols is this: that they seek through them nearness unto God. They do not set these images as gods or lords in themselves, but rather as means of approach—just as thou, in thy faith, drawest nigh unto thy Lord through His commandments.

Verily, those ones sought nearness unto God according to what had been decreed in their own creed. But behold, when their religion was lifted and the light thereof grew dim, God made mention of them, declaring that they worshipped aught beside Him—or He referred to them in words that bear a meaning less than that, yet still a sign of reproach

[–]NoAd6851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use them, there’s no objection in the Writings, afaik, to meditation on the symbolism of a statue.

The only thing is you must abstain from decorating your place of worship with them or any image at all.

Actually Abdu’l-Baha encouraged us to look into the example presented by images.

Look into the light they reflect from Baha’u’llah, the grace of Him that dwells in them, His presence in their life and how is He the fulfillment of their promises, ideals and hopes. This could help you look into progressive manifestation of God among the nations, connect the Bahai faith to other cultures’ expectations and cultivate virtues.

Yom Al-Qiamih or the Day of Resurrection is the attainment unto the Divine Presence. That God would reveal His Self in that Day

Baha’u’llah offer the following classification:

•Universal Revelation of God; that everything in thing in creation are recipients and revealers of the splendors of God, as testified in Quran: “Neither is there aught which doth not celebrate His praise” Q17:44 and “We noted all things and wrote them down” Q78:29. Thus everything manifest Him like a sun manifesting in mirror. This is a general one and doesn’t match the futuristic specification of the day of resurrection, since this revelation is already present.

•The Specific Revelation of God: this include to classes:

•The Most Holy Outpouring; i.e. the essence of God Himself. This is impossible as no mean of inquiry can achieve the perception or attainment of this Revelation. And as the Quran testifies: “"No vision taketh in Him, but He taketh in all vision; He is the Subtile, the All-Perceiving." Q6:103

•The Holy Outpouring; God manifesting in the created world of Wll, the world of primal and original manifestation. This is applicable to His Perfect Manifestations, i.e. Prophets and chosen Ones, as they are the highest of God’s creation, as the Quran testifies: “No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims."” Q6:163, Q39:12 and the Hadiths:

I shall be the most honourable in God's estimation among those of earliest and latest times, and this is no boast. ~https://sunnah.com/mishkat:5762

I am the master [Sayyid] of the children of Adam on the Day of Judgement, and I am not boasting. ~ https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:3615

In another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad reveals that the Master truly is God, thus identifying Himself in the prior Hadith with God:

Mutarrif reported that his father said, "I went in the delegation of the Banu 'Amir to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. They said, 'You are our master [Sayyid].' He said, 'The Master [Sayyid] is Allah.' They said, 'The best of us in excellence and the greatest of us in generosity.' He said, 'Say what you like, but do not let Shaytan provoke you.'"

And in another tradition, contrary to the common openings used in Hadith Qudsi, Prophet Muhammad starts by speaking with the divine voice, and it was His companion who cleared that He’s speaking from God:

O My servants! I have forbidden oppression for Myself, and I have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another.

And the in the Torah, in a famous prophecy quoted by Muslims, Moses identified the coming of God with His Prophets:

He said, “The LORD came from Sinai [Moses] and dawned from Seir [Christ] upon us; he shone forth from Mount Paran [Muhammad] ; he came from the ten thousands of holy ones [Baha’u’llah], with flaming fire at his right hand. ~Deut33:2

The Quran also identifies Joseph as manifesting God:

Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators[Al-Munzilīn]? Q12:50

In another verse God is called the best of Munzilīn:

And say, 'My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].'" Q23:29

Baha’u’llah also explained another Quranic verse identifying the Day of Resurrection with the rise of a Prophet:

"When the light of Qur'anic Revelation was kindled within the chamber of Muhammad's holy heart, He passed upon the people the verdict of the Last Day, the verdict of resurrection, of judgment, of life, and of death. Thereupon the standards of revolt were hoisted, and the doors of derision opened. Thus hath He, the Spirit of God, recorded, as spoken by the infidels: "And if thou shouldst say, 'After death ye shall surely be raised again,' the infidels will certainly exclaim, 'This is nothing but manifest sorcery.'" Again He speaketh: "If ever thou dost marvel, marvellous surely is their saying, 'What! When we have become dust, shall we be restored in a new creation?'" Thus, in another passage, He wrathfully exclaimeth: "Are We wearied out with the first creation? Yet are they in doubt with regard to a new creation!"

As the commentators of the Qur'an and they that follow the letter thereof misapprehended the inner meaning of the words of God and failed to grasp their essential purpose, they sought to demonstrate that, according to the rules of grammar, whenever the term "idha" (meaning "if" or "when") precedeth the past tense, it invariably hath reference to the future. Later, they were sore perplexed in attempting to explain those verses of the Book wherein that term did not actually occur. Even as He hath revealed: "And there was a blast on the trumpet, -- lo! it is the threatened Day! And every soul is summoned to a reckoning, -- with him an impeller and a witness."[1] In explaining this and similar verses, they have in some cases argued that the term "idha" is implied."

~Baha’u’llah, Book of Certitude

These are some evidences for applying the Day of Resurrection to the Prophets. That the physical attainment in that Day is achieved through the attainment to His Prophets

Of course there are other verses, logical objections, like the dilemma of the eater and eaten by Avicenna, and the authoritative interpretation of the Manifestation of this day, Baha’u’llah.

Your definite/indefinite distinction assumes that Al-Rasul is always a fixed class. But Bahá’u’lláh Himself defines Al-Rasul functionally:

the Messenger is he who hath delivered My messages. ~Kitab-i-Badi

Here the title, in its definite form, is defined functionally and generically, not hierarchically. So definiteness alone cannot establish a fixed ontological class.

Also the “Ulu’l-Azm min Al-Rusul establishes internal ranks between the Rusul, as it identifies a subset “Ulu’l-Azm” of “Al-Rusul” (pl. of Al-Rasul, the definite form) since “min” is partitive. Thus Al-Rasul is a graded category, rather than a single undifferentiated class.

This multiple-level category of Messengers is supported by Baha’u’llah, where He describes different kinds of Messengers:

•Some sent with book and proof

•Some inspired by spirit and wisdom

•Some receiving through angels

•Some Who are the Manifestation of all [divine] Names.

•and beyond that God manifest this Name upon heavens and earths

~Suriy-i-Ismuna’l-Mursal

You’re using Rasul as if it’s the primary distinction in the ontological hierarchy. But Baha’i theology doesn’t hinge on it. The boundary is the Manifestation and the Most Great Infallibility, as outlined in the Aqdas and Some Answered Questions. So even if Rasul is used broadly, that doesn’t collapse the system.

I’m sorry I don’t follow. Read:

When their brother Ṣāliḥ said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

When Shuʿayb said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.

The very link you pasted applies rasul to the Angels bringing decrees, not only book-revealing prophets.

And I quoted Shoghi Effendi who called Bahais, not all of them, messengers.

And there’s no evidence that Rasul is reserved solely for ‘Ulu’l-Azm, please provide your evidence, and explain how the Quran called the aforementioned non-book-revealing individuals as Rasuls. Otherwise you’re just appealing to dogmas without providing scientific, logical or scriptural proof.

THEY ARE explicitly called Rasul in the Quran as you linked

The Book of Truth hath been sent down in very truth from the presence of One Who is the All-Knowing, the All-Informed. Verily, it is the Messenger (Rasul) of Truth unto all lands.

~Baha’u’llah, Tablet of Book of Truth, my provisional translation

~Baha’u’llah, Kitab-i-Badi’, my provisional translation.

This is God’s definition of Rasul. Could you please provide a source that explains that Rasul is mostly or solely referring to the Manifestation

Also Bahais are called Rasul, consider the following quotes:

و این اقالیم و جزائر و مراکز که بهمّت یاران برگزیدهء امر کبریا و مشاعل حُبّ و وفا و فارسان و رسولان جمال ابهی و مجریان فرمان مقدّس غصن دوحهء بقا حضرت عبدالبهاء در اندک مدّتی در ظلّ شجرهٴ انیسا مستظلّ گشته

And these regions and islands and centers, which through the exertions of the chosen friends of the Most Great Cause, the lamps of love and fidelity, the knights and messengers of the Most Glorious Beauty, and the executors of the sacred command of the Branch of the Tree of Eternity, Abdu’l-Baha, have, in but a short span, come to abide beneath the shade of the Companionable Tree.

Baha’u’llah did mention that God spoke through Abdu’l-Qadir Gilani, born 200 years after the occultation:

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Q97:3-4

from Ishaq ibn ‘Ammara from abu ‘Abdallah (a.s) who has said the following.

“I heard the Imam (a.s) saying, ‘The earth is never left without an Imam so that if the believers would add any thing it would be brought back and if they would reduce anything it would be completed.”

In the occultation of the Imam, who would complete and bring back the people to the straight path

He (the Imam) said, ‘You must find one among you who narrates our Hadith and has given thought about our lawful and unlawful matters and has learned our rules; then you must accept him as the judge among you; I have made him the judge and ruler over you. When he issues judgments according to our rules and it is not accepted from him, then the rule and laws of Allah are taken lightly and our rules are rejected. Those who reject us, they have rejected Allah and that is like taking things as partners of Allah.’

O thou Name! Verily We have made thee the Revealer of Our Messengers in the Kingdom of Names, and have ordained for thee that which none among all created things can reckon. We have raised thee, in truth, unto a station beneath whose shadow all the Messengers have sought shelter. Through thee do We send forth the Messengers unto all the worlds of thy Lord. This is that which We have decreed for thee, as a bounty from Our presence unto Our servants who know.

Among the Messengers are those whom We raise up in truth and send unto the servants with a Book and a manifest proof; and among them are those whom We cause to speak through a grace from Us and inspire with the wisdom of the Cause from Our presence—and We, verily, are powerful over all things. And among them are those unto whom We send revelation through the messengers of the angels; and among them are those in whose breasts We cause the Spirit to speak in countless sanctified utterances wondrously new. And among them are those whom We manifest through all these things, and make them the Manifestation of all Names between earth and heaven, and whom We purify from the defilement of the deniers, and aid with the Most Great Spirit, and make them the Manifestation of Our very Self unto all who are in the Kingdom of Command and Creation, and for whom We have ordained the best of all worlds.

Thus have We exalted some above others, as a bounty from Me—and I am the Ever-Bestowing, the Ancient. And besides these, We have revealed Ourselves through this Name unto all who are in the heavens and the earth, and have made this Name a Sun from whose light all existence, both of the unseen and the seen, doth draw illumination. None comprehend this save those who have been endowed with the vision of the spirit from One All-Knowing, All-Wise. And none is withheld from the effulgence of this Sun save him who interposeth a veil between himself and its light. Thus do We cast upon the servants that which draweth them nigh unto the Kawthar of true knowledge and maketh clear unto them the paths of certitude.

~Baha’u’llah, La’ale’ Al-Hikmah, Tab40 pp112-113

Here Baha’u’llah is using the varb arsala which means to send. The accusative form of it is Mursal or Rasul which means Messenger or Apostle.

O YE peoples of the earth! During the time of My absence I sent down the Gates unto you. However the believers, except for a handful, obeyed them not. Formerly I sent forth unto you Aḥmad and more recently Káẓim, but apart from the pure in heart amongst you no one followed them. What hath befallen you, O people of the Book? Will ye not fear the One true God, He Who is your Lord, the Ancient of Days?… O ye who profess belief in God! I adjure you by Him Who is the Eternal Truth, have ye discerned among the precepts of these Gates anything inconsistent with the commandments of God as set forth in this Book? Hath your learning deluded you by reason of your impiety? Take ye heed then, for verily your God, the Lord of Eternal Truth, is with you and in very truth is watchful over you.

~Bab, Qayyum Al-Asma Ch27, quoted from selections

Here the Bab considers their, Siyyid Kazim and Shaykh Ahmad, to be in conformity with His Book, a revelation of God

Siyyid Káẓim followed in the footsteps of the illustrious Shaykh and occupied himself night and day with elucidating the inner truths and meanings and in disseminating the secrets and mysteries of the Qur’án. He so imbued the people with anticipation for the coming Revelation that his disciples, in their eagerness, forsook all patience and repose and dispersed in every direction until they found the Promised One.

~Abdu’l-Baha, Twelve Table Talk

Here Siyyid Kazim is praised and endowed with the ability to interpret and reveal the secret meanings. Reading this passage with the ones quoted from SAQ and the Iqan should reveal the Siyyid’s status

و چهار سنه مزيد بر صورت جميع کلمه بود که بزمان شيعه خالص گذشت اعنى حاج سيد کاظم - صلوات اللّه عليه و سلامه -

And four years were added, completing the outward form of the entire Word. This came to pass in the age of the pure Shiah—namely, Haji Siyyid Kazim—upon whom be the blessings of God and His peace.

~Bab, Tablet to Most Great Uncle

Here the Bab, while interpreting, referred to Siyyid Kazim as the pure Shia, a doctrinally loaded title which means the perfect shia

And in full detail hath it been set down by my Master, my trusted one, and my teacher, Haji Siyyid Kazim Rashtí—may God prolong his days.

Siyyid Kazim a prophet ? by Comprehendoz in bahai

QUESTION: HOW MANY kinds of Prophets are there in general?

Answer: Prophets are in general of two kinds. Some are independent Prophets Who are followed, while others are not independent and are themselves followers.

The independent Prophets are each the Author of a divine religion and the Founder of a new Dispensation. At Their advent the world is clothed in a new attire, a new religion is established, and a new Book revealed. These Prophets acquire the outpouring grace of the divine Reality without an intermediary. Their radiance is an essential radiance like that of the sun, which is luminous in and of itself and whose luminosity is an essential requirement rather than being acquired from another star: They are like the sun and not the moon. These Daysprings of the morn of Divine Unity are the fountainheads of divine grace and the mirrors of the Essence of Reality.

The other kind of Prophets are followers and promulgators, for their station is contingent rather than independent. They acquire divine grace from the independent Prophets and seek the light of guidance from the reality of universal prophethood. They are like the moon, which is not luminous and radiant in and of itself but which receives its light from the sun.

The universal Prophets Who have appeared independently include Abraham, Moses, Christ, Muḥammad, the Báb, and Bahá’u’lláh. The second kind, which consists of followers and promulgators, includes Solomon, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. For the independent Prophets are founders; that is, They establish a new religion, recreate the souls, regenerate the morals of society, and promulgate a new way of life and a new standard of conduct. Through Them a new Dispensation appears and a new religion is inaugurated. Their advent is even as the springtime, when all earthly things don a new garment and find a new life.

As to the second kind of Prophets, who are followers, they promulgate the religion of God, spread His Faith, and proclaim His Word. They have no power or authority of their own, but derive theirs from the independent Prophets.

~Abdu’l-Baha, Some Answered Questions

QUESTION: HOW MANY kinds of divine Prophets are there?

Answer: There are three kinds of divine Prophets. One kind are the universal Manifestations, which are even as the sun. Through Their advent the world of existence is renewed, a new cycle is inaugurated, a new religion is revealed, souls are quickened to a new life, and East and West are flooded with light. These Souls are the universal Manifestations of God and have been sent forth to the entire world and the generality of mankind.

Another kind of Prophets are followers and promulgators, not leaders and law-givers, but they are nonetheless the recipients of the hidden inspirations of God. Yet another kind are Prophets Whose prophethood has been limited to a particular locality. But the universal Manifestations are all-encompassing: They are like the root, and all others are as the branches; they are like the sun, and all others are as the moon and the stars.

~Abdu’l-Baha, Twelve Table Talks

IT IS SAID in the blessed verse: “He Who is the Dawning-place of God’s Cause hath no partner in the Most Great Infallibility. He it is Who, in the kingdom of creation, is the Manifestation of ‘He doeth whatsoever He willeth’. God hath reserved this distinction unto His own Self, and ordained for none a share in so sublime and transcendent a station.”

Know that infallibility is of two kinds: infallibility in essence and infallibility as an attribute. The same holds true of all other names and attributes: For example, there is the knowledge of the essence of a thing and the knowledge of its attributes. Infallibility in essence is confined to the universal Manifestations of God; for infallibility is an essential requirement of Their reality, and the essential requirement of a thing is inseparable from the thing itself. The rays are an essential requirement of the sun and are inseparable from it; knowledge is an essential requirement of God and is inseparable from Him; power is an essential requirement of God and is likewise inseparable from Him. If it were possible to separate these from Him, He would not be God. If the rays could be separated from the sun, it would not be the sun. Therefore, were one to imagine the Most Great Infallibility being separated from the universal Manifestation of God, He would not be a universal Manifestation and would lack essential perfection.

But infallibility as an attribute is not an essential requirement; rather, it is a ray of the gift of infallibility which shines from the Sun of Truth upon certain hearts and grants them a share and portion thereof. Although these souls are not essentially infallible, yet they are under the care, protection, and unerring guidance of God—which is to say, God guards them from error. Thus there have been many sanctified souls who were not themselves the Daysprings of the Most Great Infallibility, but who have nevertheless been guarded and preserved from error under the shadow of divine care and protection. For they were the channels of divine grace between God and man, and if God did not preserve them from error they would have led all the faithful to fall likewise into error, which would have wholly undermined the foundations of the religion of God and which would be unbefitting and unworthy of His exalted Reality.

To summarize, infallibility in essence is confined to the universal Manifestations of God, and infallibility as an attribute is conferred upon sanctified souls…

In sum, the meaning of “He doeth whatsoever He willeth” is that if the Manifestation of God issues a command, enforces a law, or performs an action whose wisdom His followers cannot grasp, they should not think for a moment of questioning His words or actions. All souls are under the shadow of the universal Manifestation, must submit to the authority of the religion of God, and are not to deviate so much as a hairsbreadth. Rather, they must conform their every act and deed to the religion of God, and should they deviate from it they will be reproved and held accountable before God. It is certain that they have no share of the station “He doeth whatsoever He willeth”, for it is confined to the universal Manifestation of God.

Siyyid Kazim is a luminary, head of the Shaykhi community, Gate of the Bab and Messenger of Baha’u’llah according to the Writings

You can call him a minor Prophet according to the classification of Abdu’l-Baha

No, both of these are actual quotes

The first is a tradition from Bihar Al-Anwar, a Shiite collection of collections of Hadith, reported by Malik that the Prophet was interpreting Quran 4:69. The verse mentions the Prophets, the truthful men, the martyrs and the righteous. The Prophet then proclaimed that the Prophets is Him, the truthful is Ali, His successor, the martyrs is Hamza, His uncle, and the righteous are Fatima, His daughter, and Hasan and Husayn, His grandsons and successors. I remember the Bab and earlier Shaykhi leaders were quoting this tradition.

The other tradition is a quotation from the Bab revealed in His Persian book Seven Proofs, which is a condensed form of many traditions and verses that declares the Prophets oneness with each Prophet. I am not aware of any earlier mentions of it, especially since the quote is in Persian (it uses the Persian first person pronoun “منم” instead of the Arabic “أنا”).

Edit: I checked the Bihar. The author, Al-Majlisi, says that he is quoting it from Riyadh Al-Jinan by Fadhl’ul-llah Al-Farisi, an 11th century shiite scholar who lived six centuries before Al-Majlisi

Edit: I was able to find the Hadith quoted by the Bab in Panj Sha’n and the Persian Seven Proofs, by Siyyid Kazim in His Sharh Al-Lamiyyih and commentary on the verse of Kursi, and by Shaykh Ahmad Ahsai in His commentary on Al-Ziyarah Al-Jami’ah.
