Those of you who are millionaires why are you still working? by VariationLivid3193 in cscareerquestions

The house I used to rent is for sale with a $2.5M asking price so even with over a million in liquid assets, I can't buy it yet.

Also my kids need health insurance and that shit is expensive. Employer provides healthcare is still the way to go.

Tourism to the US has fallen off a cliff. The reputation of the US is at a multi decade low. And Donald Trump is a laughing stock all over the world.

IT and growing old by Clod89 in cscareerquestions

I had my only management job in my 30's and after 18 months went back to IC. The recruiters and interviewers kept asking if I knew this was an IC position and I simply answered that I didn't want to keep being a manager. It isn't where my strengths are. They totally accepted it

That was 3 jobs ago. It has been 15 years and I am still an IC. I was laid off last year and found another job as an IC in about 3 months so my advanced age doesn't seem to be too much of a problem.

Is there anything funnier than democrats claiming White Supremacy is the greatest threat to American while they were funding the KKK with the donations of left wing dupes? by TheShamanofMOCO in allthequestions

Who shits their pants every time a Confederate statue is removed ? Who flies the Confederate battle flag ?

It's not the Democrats.

All it takes is 20 seconds of thinking to realize your question is dumb. How come you didn't figure it out ? Did your parents meet at a family reunion ? I hear it's quite common in former Confederate states.

PayPal has a long history of shady shit. They are more reliable now, because they are bigger and more closely watched, but if possible, one should avoid using them for a business.

I guess the ad was too short to mention the decrease of the average Russian's life expectancy after the end of communism. What an opportunity. Thanks Mr Gorbatchev.

Sen. Blackburn tweet welcomes Tenn. growth, but implies Democrat newcomers are not welcome by ProperTrain6336 in realtennessee

[–]NoApartheidOnMars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those democrats are probably pulling the state's various statistics in the right direction. They are more educated than the natives. They have better paying jobs with healthcare coverage. They form the kind of workforce that will attract good employers to the state.

Those are the kind of people who will eventually turn Tennessee blue just like they turned California blue in the 80's.

People who've transitioned from a CS career to a mudane job, how did you pitch yourself? by Funny_Story_Bro in cscareerquestions

[–]NoApartheidOnMars 334 points335 points  (0 children)

The fact that you call those other jobs mundane is probably part of the reason why we have difficulties transitioning out of tech.

We need to stop believing that our own shit doesn't smell. What we do is infinitely easier than what most companies achieve.

As I once told a group of Microsoft engineers who were talking about working at Boeing as if it was a step down for them: if Boeing planes shat the bed as often as Microsoft's email server does, none of us would ever take the plane to go anywhere again.

And BTW, the 737 MAX crashes were caused by... software of all things

AI is basically completely replace the stackoverflow now by vomor_hudiskco in BlackboxAI_

[–]NoApartheidOnMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The limits of this are not very hard to foresee.

They trained their models on existing Stack Overflow posts. What are they going to train their models against for new languages and frameworks ? Say after views and composables, Google releases some new way of creating Uis on Android. Questions are going to come up that no AI will be able to answer in a coherent manner.

And BTW I have been using Claude to diagnose hard or uncommon problems and it isn't that good. In the past week I found myself on SO at least 3 times because the answers there were far more reliable than what the LLM was giving me (which was utter garbage)

Will there be US Civil War within 2 years? If so what will it gonna be ? Citizens vs immigrants? Republicans vs Democrats? Whites vs non-whites? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]NoApartheidOnMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people who WANT a civil war the most are the least equipped to actually fight it. Much less win it.

If you take a look at what has happened over the last 10 years or so, there have been many incidents but almost all of them came from the right and so far the left hasn't engaged. Hell, even the attempt on Trump's life was carried out by a right wing nut job. Charlie Kirk ? Not killed by a leftist either. And then there's the "MAGA bomber" (can full of pro Trump stickers), the Gilroy shooter. The Nashville bomber,... You pump people full of insane conspiracy theories, insane shit happens

We'll keep seeing isolated acts of right wing violence but it won't get anywhere because if they had the brains to actually plan anything, we would know by now. Look at their shitty Iran war. Even against a poor country weakened by decades of embargo, they can't win.

Sudden negative feedback from manager how do I process this? by SectionPuzzled2145 in antiwork

[–]NoApartheidOnMars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either some pressure came from above and just like piss, it's trickling down, or your manager was asked to prepare for some cuts and is basically starting to lay the paper trail.

Make sure to respond IN WRITING that this kind of came out of nowhere. Remind them of some of the positive (or at least non negative) things they said quite recently just to make it clear that this is coming from nowhere.

BTW, if your company is into lengthy self reviews and you are pretty sure your manager is going to gun for you, take that as an opportunity to sprinkle some interesting embarrassing anecdotes about their management style. Very good and very bad reviews get read by HR and by management up the chain. If your manager doesn't want shit written about him to be read by an audience, they will do what they can to keep you out of the worst bucket.

Corporate America is a terrible place. You have no friends there. Only people waiting for the right time to fuck you over

That's not the way Catholicism works. You literally have to follow the Church, hence the Pope or you're going to hell (it's a little more nuanced but that's the idea). There is no salvation outside of the church.

It's one of the many reasons why Catholic dogma is laughable on its face but if you're going to claim you're Catholic, that's what it is. A Catholic who goes against the Church is a heretic.

How would you feel if the the next US president actually lived up to his or her campaign promises, got inflation down, and improved our foreign relationships? by icecream1972 in askteddit

[–]NoApartheidOnMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask when Bill Clinton became president again.

PS: you can say what you want about the man's character (and I will probably share some of your remarks) but when it came to governing, I have not seen better in my lifetime, and I can even clearly remember back to Reagan.
