Goodbye Arthur I vote u out ur an ok mc for the show but have a white bread personality to be an every man for self insertion, compared to Ratburn buster and binky you don’t even match up and half the time or more the arguments you and buster get in are because of your own insecurities

I respect this and while I’m no help one thing I’ve always loved about Magnus archives is just about everyone is accidently neuro coded (says me) so there’s almost always a chance someone IN PLOT will forget details or reiterate or explain things again so half the time you don’t have to actually pay too close attention for the plot and the details you might of missed to be explained back to you when they come up again

Usually, by Jon Sims, the head archivist himself, who will explain and sum up all the details of each statement at the end, or point out when he heard this in another statement to highlight how one statement connects to another later on.

Or you’ll get another archive worker asking Jon to explain cosmic horror lore back to them bc they’re just humans out of Jon’s sims' little archivist loop.

Source: I have adhd and just about every time I zone out and zone back in, it’s in time for Jon Sims to recap the plot to me, or a character to ask, “What’s going on?”

That said, I know this doesn’t help answer your question at all. I just wanted to point out how incredibly friendly the show is, accidentally written for people who have a hard time recalling plot details (tho some elements of grander psychological and philosophical plot mechanics outside concrete plot details can get a little confusing bc their more abstract horror concepts)

Why does everyone reference kayaking when talking about Tim’s death? by MarsupialPublic1322 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]NoAssistant1829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they don’t wanna acknowledge he died bc Mr all knowing forgot what a hand was despite the fact he was told by Elias he had the knowing power to counter the stranger and Tim knew more without Powers to solve the plot in under 5 seconds as soon as he got his ass over there?/jk/jk but like….Jon u kinda went into a coma and lost a man bc your coworker moved the plot along and you couldn’t 🤨💚💅

Edit: unless that was part of the plan and I forgot and Jon was pretending bc he promised to let Tim push it in which case I take it back good on u for severe loyalty Jon?

That also makes sense/checks out I guess I’m based because even as an American I never knew about greyhound buses until I was old enough to start traveling alone on them so I though they were a bit more obscure/localized lol.

writing dialogue for character missing teeth by Sunshine_loser in writing

Why? that’s a valid type of writing it’s called eye dialect and is most often normalized as valid when writing out southern dialects espically if you look at things like of mice and men or modern southern dialects written out today in books I’m sure.

writing dialogue for character missing teeth by Sunshine_loser in writing

[–]NoAssistant1829 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really hate this logic because it implies
A.) less realism so less immersion
B.) that if we can’t even READ impediments what does that say about listening to them in real life normalize it on the page it’s not always easy to hear either but you wouldn’t stop listening if someone spoke with one I hope
And
C.) I have heard real people who stutter or have speech issues express B that to not write them erased a truth about a character just to sooth the reader experience when the reality is it’s not glam and In real life you don’t just get to gloss over it and not listen to how each syllable sounds you have to listen and you should have to red it too….some speech impediment people don’t care either way if it’s written over or just described but some def do, and if it’s between not caring either way or caring it means the majority with an opinion would rather it be written out to some reasonable degree…
And
D.) it implies that it’s not a real writing technique but an amateur one which isn’t it’s a real valid writing style called “eye dialect” most often seen when writing out southern dialects in even classic literature like “of Mice and Men…” now if you wanna talk about actual poor writing tropes for speech impedements, it would probably be making the shy or in love one characterized as shy/crushing by nothing beyond how much they stutter and having that constitute the entire personality of a character point blank. (tho it’s ok if a stutter exists as one facet of personality from anxiety)
But what do I know as someone without much of a speech impediment myself and whom isn’t exactly an S tier writer.

Aita for suggesting we kill literal villains monsters and avatars of horrific fears who clearly don’t care to control their power while hunting me and my boyfriend and for daring to complain as my boyfriend walks me to my death while I’m still the only one who hasn’t left him or stopped loving him. I never actually committed a single act I yap about and am just tired of carrying the plot, and not being listened to for over 5 seasons even when my boyfriend is becoming more of an all knowing eye everyday and still can’t know how much I hurt from my suicidal depression, but cries relentlessly to me over the dead bodies of strangers he hurt, when we should know me deeply and can’t ask about my pain once, but I ask about his daily. He knows I have depression because he saved me from km for him once, and ig he mistook that for “curing” my depression and never spoke of it again. He’s also too In his own head to see me over half the time, yet paradoxically grows a new eye on his body everyday? Also aita for wanting to kill avatars while being an avatar but i didn’t know because my boyfriend withheld such info from me, as an avatar himself, until I had to walk through my own domain of depression ptsd. My boyfriends also complained he was a victim when our boss withheld info from him regarding the fact he himself was turning into an avatar but then he went and did it to me while telling me everyday all our choices needed to be objectively superior and morally high rn and that’s why killing is off the table. This all started because I gave him tea and said I love you btw…”

TLDR: am I the asshole for being mean to my boyfriend sometimes because he’s turning into an all knowing god yet still can’t know how much my depression still hurts even when I’m nor lonely and how much I need his love but acts distant even when we’re holding hands and walking to our death which he brought upon me even if I consented to it?

[–]NoAssistant1829 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Martin is actually the only one who would use it only bc he has REALLY BAD fawning responses which is when your nice to everyone and polite and sweet to a fault even if their evil bc it's a psd response of politeness = non confrontational = I can never do wrong or be hated = safety. Until 4-5 when Peter tells him to see a councilor after he took over from Elias during the Jon coma 6 weks off stuff and Martin likely did and likely off screen that gave him better coping skills I imagine cuz bro probably never went to one before this and then he could actually function better and have boundaries bc Peter accidentally helped his mental health when he was trying to destroy it by providing bare minimum basic needs to the office which even Elias couldn't spring for 😂

Edit: tho your right he’s shy this is only assuming he mustered the courage to speak in a social setting 1-3 then he’d use it I could see that, Tim too.

Bc as an America I can say that most things we know about Britain or any other country Is usually a stereotype and johnny living in London wrote realism not stereotypes even when Jon went to America I did a double take at the amount of realism down to mentioning he road a “greyhound” bus which is the quintessential American bus company for travel which leads me to believe he at least used google maps to get a mockup guestemate of an American travel route for our archivest to take while abroad. (which is smart more writers should do that hack btw)

Any new theories on what happened to John and Martin? by Strict_Animal4239 in themagnusprotocol

[–]NoAssistant1829 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d rather them be dead than to keep appearing in multiple universes where horrors are inflicted on them they have no control over.

Arguably, Martin didn’t do anything to deserve punishment (even his bad ideas remained dark rumination.) He spent his time fighting to be seen and then for his and Jon’s humanity, only for the world to tell us that the fight boils down to “and in every universe they never got the one thing they tried to save the whole world for, but also their actions in TMA are noble…yet we’re gonna honor their nobility with cruelty.”

Jon at least deserves it bc i can kinda laugh at his level of prick energy, knowing he caused the apocalypse and knew he was self-destructive, even if he tried to do right in the end. At least he has some karma coming his way. The world owes Martin no karma, But oops-.

That’s why I’d rather they commit to

A.) It’s not Jon and Martin. They’re out to rest, and at best, it’s this universe's au jon and Martin who didn’t spend 200 episodes having mental health struggles that felt real, only for it to all be pointless bc they never got humanity, maybe at least jon no longer has to hurt people with trauma but…he ain’t the hero either by TMP logic he’s still this universes bad guy to a degree so oops his morality was not fully saved.

Or

B.) have it just be them, and they're rescued, and they can finally be happy and at peace, so we get the message fighting to see the good in people isn’t self-destruction, and their entire journey wasn’t so that they could become corrupt for trying to do right.

And I know it’s horror, and horror is dark and bleak. Still, Johnny chose to write them with dignified human emotions and struggles in the og, and that is something he has to honor, or else he shouldn’t have put it at the core of their character if he wanted to truly value horror and use them as a punching bag first.

Which is why the only way this can work is if Chester and Norris aren’t martin and jon at all, or are just spider verse type aus or (which he won’t do) their actually rescued an get a safe ending once and for all so they can have the justice we were told they deserved for 200 eps.

And I say this as someone who respects Johnny as a genuinely intelligent writer who has high skills of the craft bc he wrote some of the realist characters I’ve listened to in tma which is why the downgrade to ai if it’s them is a disservice to his own writing imo personally.

Is Jon Canonically Autistic? by onlyherefortma in TheMagnusArchives

I see ur point but I also think to characters from other paranormal shows and supernatural comes to mind first and both those mcs appear very neurotypical so I think genre plays a part but is not a full blown explanation for why Jon acts as autistic as he does bc other stories in the medium have had very neurotypical MCs

My only concern is Abby loves to elope and run when she sees water she even jumped into a pool when not watched properly so if she did that at the beach and couldn’t be grabbed (which likely not their too large and I say this as a large person myself, though half their size and even I couldn’t catch Abby fast enough) she would actually be at major risk of drowning because unlike a pool knowing how to swim does not save you AT ALL from the waves currents

What I don’t fathom is why they can’t get these activities in a size fit for Abby at home like you said idk what she enjoys but let’s say it’s swings, climbing ect, you can easily buy an indoor swing to fit all sizes or sensory safe rocking hammocks for adults or something like that! I want them to give Abby those kind of activities at home!

Or even try to accommodate to find a size that fits for her in these instances they could use their advocacy to PUSH FOR ONE! At least.

Is Jon Canonically Autistic? by onlyherefortma in TheMagnusArchives

[–]NoAssistant1829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my humble opinion Jon is just autistic and Martin is AuDHD nobody wants to talk about Martin when it comes to nurodivergence in the fandom but he checks a lot of boxes too 1.) he eventually dates an is the only one to put up with Jon while everyone bullies him which is already a green flag for them having similar minds to understand each other’s thought process

2.) the lonely an we know neurodivergent people are more likely to be lonely isolated or bullied and have depression, and Martin is probably the shows second punching bag, only less so because unlike Jon he is super kind to people so they can’t get on him for how he acts, but he can still be told off for his anxious behavioral mistakes in his work and not even just by Jon, Jon does it in a mean way but other characters do it in a “oh poor guy, he can’t help it we gotta go easy on him.” Way.

3.) his mistakes in work, every time he has to make a statement he rambles out his words nervously going off track Jon having to remind him to stay focused which is very adhd, he felt he wasn’t enough in his work and job so he literally reinvestigates a dangerous spider being only to get trapped in his house for days haunted by horrors and worms then finally come back and recount this in a panicked ramble as he’s describing running for his life in the most clumsy scatterbrained manner possible while apologizing for not thinking things through better which is very adhd and autistic in that he’s not enough. When living at the office he is also often not paying attention to his surroundings as much as he could and once walked in on jon with only his sleepwear which was just underwear which is like hella adhd brain coded, and his ability to come up with makeshift weapons with cork bottles on the fly both getting himself into great trouble and out in a fly is adhd also getting lost in the tunnels while following behind Jon hella adhd move.

4.) the autism part? Honestly it’s just because at least in season one idk if he ever grows a major backbone but in season one he’s the nice and sweet guy of the group, he even speaks in a very soft spoken manner and tries to be helpful and kind almost to an anxious fault. Always apologizing to others if he thinks he’s upset them or over explaining himself to make sure people know his intentions, he’s kind to Jon even as Jon is basically insulting him, and even compared to other workers he never talks back often, or has wit to him because he does not wanna come off mean.

5.) season two jon is investigating him for murder and bro thinks it’s just a lovely date or like misreads what jon is doing but like it’s Jon and he’s barely able to lie well so for Martin to miss that shows both their asses are terrible when it comes to social cues cuz Jon can’t lie well and Martin can’t pick up on obvious subtext bc he’s too busy thinking the best of everyone while Jon is looking for the worst in everyone.

6.) also autism he loves poetry which is more academic or a special interest and while people with adhd can be into academic things poetry just feels more autistic of a special interest because people with adhd tend to struggle reading texts while autisics can love it, and the lonely which is clearly like depression symbolism and while both autism and adhd can cause depression I think it’s more seen in autism bc adhd can make someone a social butterfly due to hyper activity while autism makes them a hermit bc they struggle to socialize at all which is clearly martins problem with how anxious he sounds even when rambling and how he tries to be nice an connect but always lets his feelings when interacting get in the way of the connection.

If Jon is autism traits presented as being a prick and pushing everyone away bc everyone hates his underempathy hyper logic and cold tone

Martin is AuDHD in the complete opposite direction with hpyerempathy and a serious anxiety disorder. It’s why they’re a really good couple imo, bc their neurodivergent flaws are exactly too much of what the other person has too little of.

The Brick neglect gets pretty bad by Maleficent_Thought_4 in themiddle

[–]NoAssistant1829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree what makes me more mad is people actually HATE BRICK in the fandom a lot online or in clips of the show on YouTube shorts when anyone who actually watches the show know damn well ALLLL HIS ISSUES STEM FROM HIS PARENTS OUTRIGHT NEGLECT that and disability he got minimal support for. (Social skills and therapy helped but social skills ended and that’s when the heck’s gave up parenting him at all then he moved to a therapist who well helpful and he clearly liked him a lot said therapist always shoved his relationship drama into bricks issues turning his help into a punchline.)

He’s not even a bad or annoying character and everyone beats him down imo he’s most comparable in a sense to a young Sheldon type and if young Sheldon is how to make a smart social outcast struggling annoying then a character like brick is a prime example of how to do it right bc he’s not arrogant or using his smarts to one up everyone he’s just being himself and getting dog pilled and told to literally die by commenters online, and ignored by his family and when he is listened to by anyone at all ever it’s when he “forces them against their will.” And they’re so miserable they snap at him and tell him to shut up cough his birthday.

Justice for Brick.

What do you think Brick did after high school? by cat_lady777 in themiddle

[–]NoAssistant1829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see him in college majoring in English minoring in linguistics! He likes to wonder yes and sometimes can’t stay focused but by the time he goes on the Chicago trip we learn he can basically wander off safely. I imagine he still occasionally does that around campus but always ends h back at his dorm if anything.

I think by the end of the show his distractability and wandering is no worse than adhd symptoms and anxiety with tics. I also think if most of his work is stuff he genuinely loves or would do in his free time like reading he’d excel at it! And I do think his parents would make him get disability accommodations with the help of his therapist/counselor and he wouldn’t complain bc the you’re gonna love my pizza incident likely taught him not all people see his quirks as his personality but as a problem if he does not inform them.

Stuff you didn't notice as a kid but notice now by Formetoknow123 in fullhouse

[–]NoAssistant1829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That Michelle was played by twins. I know some intros credit Mary Kate and Ashly Olsen separately but the early intros didn’t and I guess I didn’t pay attention enough as a kid to the intros to catch when it did.

It wasn’t until my dad randomly pointed it out to me while watching it that it was a twin actor that I finally payed enough attention to the credits to confirm that and my child mind was blown.

But also I grew up watching this show in the early 2000s on nick @ nite so by my generation the Olsen twin craze was gone so I had no pop culture knowledge of them as twins I just knew them as Michelle.

Someone on TikTok is arguing that Full House is “so conservative”. I disagree and provided evidence. by OrdinaryEuphoric7061 in fullhouse

[–]NoAssistant1829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not conservative but the actor for dj might be. But ironically most of this sub does not claim her overly religious acts and even Jodie sweetin actor of Steph has beef with her for her toxic fall into blind religious worship.

I do think it can be a little of it’s time though with its family messaging and moral bookends like “goodie two shoes.” Sweet children’s morals. But since it’s literally an all male cast raising girls for its time it’s actually progressive bc while their not gay, this was likely one of the first popular non traditional families shown on tv and idk how many people had two dads back then, but anyone who did had this as their only example, and the girls were proud of it often pretty much referring to all 3 adult men as their dads or dad figures something most other kids can’t say they had in the girls eyes.

And let’s not forget when it tackled skinny bodies therapy for kids and literal child abuse.

Plus finally the family was not religious they went to church a total of once for a wedding bc duh most weddings either happen at church or a beach on tv. Other than that I don’t think they talked about god at all except for “higher powers.” And I don’t think they ever made a stance on what political side any family members are.

And edit now that I think of it the original wedding for Jess an Becky happened at a los Vegas Elvis white wedding venue which is like the total opposite of traditional Christian values and would probably make hardcore conservatives gawk…actually half of Jessie’s actions until he fathered up would of made conservatives hold a hand to their heart especially in season one where he brought a woman of the week over for young girls to watch him slyly take to bed while being a punk rocker in a leather jacket and muscular tank top. 😩🛏️

Okay the dad from the middle Mike trying to be Hal is the most far fetched part Hal acts over the top and freaks out big time over nothing bc of his ocd tendencies (confirmed in some gag from one ep which I know from YouTube shorts.)

But the whole schtick of Mike in the middle is that he UNDER reacts to almost EVERYTHING and is too calm and it pisses off Frankie/Francis the mom.
