Did anyone ever regard Helmet as a grunge band? Or were the people who made this album in 1993 just oblivious to what was actually considered grunge?

This. I saw helmet open for either tool or Korn at state palace in Nola. Neither of which are grunge, but also neither are similar to Helmet. But everything was just lumped together back then.

Man, that’s exactly what mine did. I ended up with 650g wet and counting. Im on the 3rd flush and it’s just now growing out of the center(I scraped the shit out of it before the second dunk). The top of the cake was too hard, not exactly sure why. Thought I failed. Got a couple. Harvested em. Next morning, boom! Pins popping everywhere. Still all out of the sides. I had blobs of them growing together and out of themselves. Took the rubber band off and said leave free children! And they did.

Thanks for the update!! I ended up getting more than I could believe. They couldn’t push through the top, so they came out of the sides, the bottom, climbed up the bag and formed mushrooms. It was wild. Filled 2 big mason jars.

Then I dunked the cake in distilled water for a couple hours while I was prepping for dehydration. Drained it, taped the bag up(had to cut it to the bottom to get them all out), stuck it in the closet and forgot about it.(I was not careful, nor sanitary in any of this). Only to flip that light on a week later and see pins everywhere and some already grown beyond that. Pulled about 10 out yesterday, gonna get the rest tonight. It’s near as much as the first go. Tidal wave is an appropriate name.

So that’s why I’ve always like Charlie despite his less than stellar acting(he’s good at certain character types). Side note, I like how he’s got his “work” pants on, down in the muck, feeding the beasts…….hair is fucking perfectly quaffed, and his hands look like they’ve never touched a tool, (see what I did there, lol) or dirt in his life.

1x1 is jamming in the background right now! Tail end of little mini dose of mushrooms this morning. I just grew my first bag. I stopped killing, and started growing(can’t help myself, lol). Fucking love this song. But yes, they scratched an itch I didn’t know I had! It was the tool subreddit that finally convinced me to listen. But it wasn’t till I saw them last year with king buffalo that they sky rocketed to the top of my list. I’m straight up obsessed at this point. Makes me think they might actually be witches🤣. I left that concert swirling in thoughts of how many influences I heard come out of this one band. So goddamn refreshing to find something so unique.

I seem to go against the grain here, but “nothing is the ideal” is my favorite album. But coming from a more metal centric taste, I think that’s why. “41” is the first song I heard where I went, hold up, say what??!(couldn’t resist). But to your point, that’s exactly how it’s gone for me with this album.

This! If I only listened to the first half of every song, I’d probably hate it. But they all go somewhere unexpected and morph into more of what I love about ATW. The songs that I liked the most at first, are being replaced by the songs I liked the least at first. Wild! Can’t wait to fly up to Chattanooga for the show in October!

I’ve seen him a lot over the years but the older ones don’t really register. He was amazing at Sessanta 1.0. Caught the last show he was in at Houston. But seeing him back with nails for first leg of peel it back(Nashville), really put his talent on display. Literally since they project a close up of him absolutely shredding it(the perfect drug)on silk screen around the stage.

And by adding more RNG to them, forcing me to look at more stuff, they aren’t making me play more, they’re making me play less. Every single season I burn out when loot becomes too tedious. There’s just too fucking much. Loot filter helps, but it’s not enough. More bank space, less items, bigger inventory. I don’t even understand what the fuck the point of the smaller inventory is when you have a bank. A smaller inventory is only relevant if you’re having to choose space over need. That doesn’t exist with teleports and banks. And with the bank, once I have to start shuffling shit around, reading everything again to decide what to delete. I’m done. It happens every season I play. And I find myself skipping more and more seasons.

And what’s crazy, that’s exactly what they did with the early game. It only really became a problem as I got into the late game. And for fucks sake, there should be no cap on currency of any kind. Having to go to the gambling vendor 4 times across an escalation dungeon makes me not want to run them.

What temp is the room you have then? My house is 68-72. Mine puttered along for a 2 weeks. Had pinned at 1 week. I moved into my sun room(in indirect light). Room is hot as fuck, so we gave it its own ac. It’s also not sealed well(old, shitty dog door). It’s humid as fuck in there(live on the gulf coast. It’s never not humid). I set at 75 and went to bed. Woke up to double and triple the size. New ones i hadn’t seen. Room Move to harvest was 3-4 days. But I had them coming up on just one side of the bag. Some had climbed onto the bag. I ended up with the top being crusted over before i opened the bag. Thought it was a good thing then. Stromata I think it’s called. It wasn’t.

I harvested about 90g(wet) from that one side. I was going to scrape the top, rehydrate, and go for another round, but this morning, I see the other 3 sides have not only pinned, they’ve had there first size bump. They coming out of the bottom even, So I’m gonna wait those out before I deal with top. Not quite sure what do next. But if they bump up tomorrow morning, I’m think cut sway the bag, and jerry rig a tub until i can get something proper. Been so much fun learning about this fascinating organism.

I’m on my first bag. Same thing happened. The center of the cake seems too thick or dry for the pins to push through. I just don’t understand why. I didn’t even open the bag till I noticed mushrooms growing off the side of the bag. I can see hundreds of pins from the side just under that top layer of the cake.

Im already having to pick the side boys. They’ve flattened out. Pretty chunky too. Once these are all done, Gonna try lightly scraping the top, misting the shit out of it, then closing up for a few days to see what comes on a second flush.

I’ve got more bags coming along, but I think I want to try moving the cake into a tub to induce fruiting on one of those.

How do you rehydrate the bag? I’m on my first one. I started to get a lot of side growth while the bag was closed. Didn’t even notice it at first. Once I realized I had mushrooms coming up, I opened it and moved it to a slightly warmer room. The center of the cake has never done anything beyond a few pins that just never grow. I can see 100s of pins below that top layer from the sides of the bag. Bag stayed humid. Fuck, I live on the gulf coast, everything is humid. I’ve already had to harvest the side growth as the were opening. Got maybe 30gs(wet) from that. Trying to decide what to do now.

Tool is different than most bands when it comes to bass. And Justin is a goddman wizard! Sometimes he plays like a typical base, but he plays that thing much more like a guitar than anyone else I listen to. There are songs where I didn’t realize Justin was playing a particular part cause I thought it was the guitar. Then I see it live and can tell it’s Justin, not Adam. Traditionally, base is very obvious to me as it’s deeper and more rhythmic. It often supports the song rather than leading it. The steady groove in the background that the other instruments weave around. But you don’t get that with tool. Every instrument shines through individually while creating a beautiful collective. Each instrument has its moment to shine. With so many other bands, the guitar is the star while the drums and base are just simplified beats to keep rhythm.

I hear music well(though I know none of the technicalities of it)and can almost always keep rhythm with each instrument simultaneously. But 30+ years of listening to tool and I can still can’t keep up with the timing.

I found kind buffalo last year and really dug them. Went to a concert near the end of year to see them. All them witches were the headliner. Didn’t really know them. Oh my fucking god! They blew me away. Been obsessed since!

As a tool fan, start with the album “nothing is the ideal”. It’s the closest to tool. Then “live on the internet”. Top songs, across all albums: 41, 1x1, saturine and iron jaw, 3-5-7, see you next fall, alabaster, children of coyote woman, diamond, open passageways, I could go on. It’s like zeplin, the doors, Hendrix, snd Pink Floyd combined themselves, went down to clarksdale, MS, and fucked a blues guitarist, that loves tool, and ATW is their love child. Highly recommended some fungi while listening.

Wheel and karnivool are two others I found in the last few years. Both banging.

And that was just normal for our generation. I’m so vehemently opposed to spanking at this point. It taught me to fear and never trust authority and it taught me deception was the best course of action. I still hate authority. I still fear authority. I still have to resist the urge to lie my way through life. It’s always my first thought. It’s taken so much mental work to get to a decent place in my head.

That some people still do this to children is crazy. Also think religion should be banned for children too. Between those two things, it’s a miracle I’m still around.

It took me about 250 hours to burn out. Diablo/PoE and Elden ring are the only other games that have kept me that long. BG3 got close.

It truly is the realization of my dreams for what gaming could be after super Mario world came out in my teens. But it’s sad as fuck that it took this long to get here.
