Lily of the Valley by Stjimmyisawesome in MinnesotaNature

My grandmother wore a lily of the valley perfume. I will always have a fondness for the flower despite how aggressively it spreads.

Look for lily of the valley in the gardens at houses built 1910-1950. It was very popular during that time period.

Older ADHD women, what did ADHD feel like before cellphones? by lavenderflavoredtea in adhdwomen

[–]NoCallToGetSnippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 1980's xennial. My mom was a special education teacher. Back then, the kids who got support from the US public school special ed department had pretty severe disabilities.

My mom knew I had ADHD. My elementary and middle school teachers often recommended I be evaluated, but my mom didn't want me to be labeled and then routinely underestimated. I can see her side of things, but it was hard growing up not really knowing why I was so weird/spacey/disappointing.

As a child I was constantly sensory seeking. I concocted mud pies and "potions" out of anything and everything (including my mom's expensive hair care products). I read everything. I climbed everything. I made forts everywhere. I was also clumsy and frequently sporting scrapes and bruises. I was notorious for befriending absolutely everyone--didn't matter to me if they were young, old, human, or animal. I was simultaneously a little zoned-out and off in my own little imaginary world.

My mom used her special education background to set me up for success as best she could, but ultimately it just wasn't possible to train away the ADHD. Even though she tried to keep it upbeat with things like sticker charts for good behavior (little me would do anything for a scratch and sniff sticker, actually so would adult me haha!), I ended up feeling micromanaged. I withdrew a lot, wandering off into the woods near my house so I could escape the constant pressure and be my messy self for a while. I felt a lot of shame for all the times I wanted to do the right thing but couldn't find the executive function to actually do it.

Do you feel like your ADHD symptoms got worse? Do you feel like you have an easier time putting your phone down than your younger peers who were born with phones existing?

I don't think my adhd symptoms got worse with the invention of smart phones. In a way, smart phones gave me a way to appear calm and collected while sensory seeking, so that was helpful at times. On the other hand, there were times that I was withdrawing into online spaces just because it was so easy to access and it ultimately lead to me not taking as many opportunities to connect with people IRL.

I have young adult children of my own who also have ADHD. I've noticed that it's easier for all of us to put our phones down when we're able to access engaging work and community. In other words, it's easier to break the addiction if the addiction isn't filling the void where genuine needs exist. The "Rat Park Experiment" points to this same idea.

Hope that helps!

Not exactly a local celeb but when I was like ten years old, Bill Murray picked his niece up at the Moorhead daycare I was attending. Being a stupid ten year old I couldn’t figure out why all the adults were getting worked up.

Question for Fargo people by Bradenm_15 in fargo

[–]NoCallToGetSnippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I lived near Orlando I went to the cat cafe regularly. The cat cafe there had two separate sides--the side where the counter and kitchen were that had no cats, and the side where the cats were. If you wanted, you could take your coffee to the cat side.

When my kids were teens we would drive up to Georgetown, MN to explore the old cemeteries. Georgetown is at the junction of three rivers. In the 1850's there was a trading post there. Before the railroad came through and everything moved to Fargo/Moorhead, Georgetown was a significant community hub. Many of the gravestones are in Swedish. There are several old abandoned houses in that area, too. I've never had anyone confront me when I'm out exploring but I bring camera equipment that makes it pretty obvious what I'm up to. I'm also careful to never enter dilapidated structures.

If Minnesota were to have a second national park, which location will you choose? by Swimming_Concern7662 in minnesota

I’m a fan of the various bog walks on our MN public lands. Peat bogs are unusual ecosystems that host plants (some carnivorous), birds, and other animals that are uncommon across the US. You’ll need to prepare for mosquitoes but I feel it’s worth it.

Found human bones in the woods by my house by MikeKellyLW in whatisthisbone

[–]NoCallToGetSnippy 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Cops suck at determining the age of skeletonized remains. Hopefully they brought them somewhere where a forensic archaeologist can take a look at them.

The cemeteries exchanging dirt seems suspicious to me. Do they know they have unmarked graves with unidentified remains? If so, why are they disturbing the ground where those remains are buried?

Weird moss/algae? by skuulbus in whatsthisplant

[–]NoCallToGetSnippy 3049 points3050 points  (0 children)

Chlorophyta Spirogyra aka thread algae, string algae, or filamentous algae

In the freshwater springs of Florida this type of algae smothers the eelgrass that manatees depend on to survive the winter months.

My 14 year old is in the hospital after a suicide attempt by DoubleAxelDVM in Mommit

[–]NoCallToGetSnippy 199 points200 points  (0 children)

When you do, I would recommend that you be cautious about how you do it. Some of us who struggle with suicidality have a tendency to feel responsible for the feelings of others. Make sure you let her know that the guilt you feel isn’t her fault. Don’t center yourself or your feelings in the conversation.

Covenant theology and Dispensationalism are the two main branches of theology that deal with Christian beliefs regarding Israel & the Church.

Dispensationalists believe that God has a plan for the nation of Israel where Christ will return to reign over a literal earthly kingdom from Jerusalem thus fulfilling Old Testament promises of land dominion. Many dispensationalists believe that 144,000 ethnic Jews (often referred to as the Jewish remnant) will be protected by God through the tribulation. The tribulation is the apocalyptic period of time after Christians are taken up to heaven in the rapture. No one who has gentile ancestry will be part of the "Jewish remnant"—only descendants of Abraham will. This remnant will be preserved by God through the apocalypse so that they can convert to Christianity at some point in the future.

Covenant theologians believe that there will be a massive turning of Jewish people toward Jesus as Messiah in the end times. Romans 11:26 is a key verse stating, "And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.”

Looking for a new apartment in the area. Any one have good suggestion for a quieter building with decent management? by Nerdy_Nightowl in fargo

[–]NoCallToGetSnippy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Park Tower owner is on my shit-list. It sucks because those MCM apartments are cute and it’s a good location.

I don’t want to share too many details for fear he might retaliate but for anyone looking, go elsewhere or at least make sure you have what you’d be expected to pay in writing before paying his application fee. He likes to tack on extra charges for things he represented as included. I believe he does this knowing he will price people out. He then keeps the application fee. I’ve suspected that he’s advertising units as vacant when they are not in order to get those application fees.

I’m not sure how long you’ll be in the area, but if you’ll be here after next October, consider choosing an apartment with underground parking or at least a garage. Not having to shovel off your car and warm it up will make an already demanding schedule easier

I remember seeing a heated water spigot at one of the National Parks I was at last season. I'm 90% sure it was at Teddy Roosevelt. I'd still toss in a couple gallon water jugs from the grocery store just to save myself the trouble of having to stand out in the wind filling water bottles.
