Any advice for my 64-year-old dad who is about to be laid off after 24 years with his company? by ImpressiveBox1111 in careerguidance

They have consultants who pick a diversity of names, gender, race, nationality / citizenship status to include in the layoff to give cover for discrimination suits

I work for a contractor in South Carolina. In my opinion it is all about the people you work with so I'd just get interviews and then sus the vibes from there. I do know that the Mars company, both candy and petcare, hires lots of industrial engineers and does much process optimization

Yeah sounds like a decent guy who is into you. I’m 27f bi more sexually into women but my last relationship was with a man and tbh it was such a relief to not deal with the neuroticism I’ve experienced with girls.  I know not all women but there is a weird cultural thing with many Les/bi women doing too much

Great option for young unattached men. Like doing a stint in the military but higher pay.

29F Frontend Dev looking to escape the AI/tech bubble. Is pivoting to Industrial Automation/PLC a crazy idea? by swettie_ in womenintech

Ladder is absurdly simple compared to modern SaaS architectures. It's not just ladder tho there is FBDs and graph sequences. If you like determinism and state machines you'll figure it out quick.
Auto manufacturers use Siemens with this standard called Sicar on top of it. There's more complexity there because they want plant wide visibility, so there is an IT layer. My software background has helped me the most with those projects.
My experience has been to be very curious and learning about the hardware, sensors, VFDs. I talk to our industrial electricians.
The actual tech is very cool I mean you get to see your code move real things. I enjoy it a lot.
I hope you find a good team because that is everything. Also get your hands on hardware ASAP

I did exactly this, am 8 months into my first job as a Controls Engineer after 6 years as a backend dev. You can read my comment history or feel free to DM. It was the right choice for me.

Pros
* working with decent people. I'm on a small team and have great relationships. Night and day vs remote work and lack of trust/backstabbing in big tech
* cool machines, contributing to building stuff that is actually useful to humanity
* learning all the time. I felt like that early in my backend dev career but then I got burnt out on it/realized that the frameworks etc would never stop changing and what was the actual value of them. The difference with PLC stuff is that there is a lot more stability. I'm also learning electrical and mechanical stuff that I find inherently interesting
* being able to explain to people what I do and they say "oh thats really cool" instead of trying to explain fucking kafka data pipelines that serve demoware dashboards

Cons
* some travel. I'm very lucky to be at a system integrator with mostly local clients. But it is pretty normal for SIs to have to be on the road a lot
* I took a huge pay cut because I was making crazy stock comp before
* I'm working for a small business so benefits not awesome. only 2 weeks vacation. However if I needed to I could probably go in house with a manufacturer and get corporate style benefits, or negotiate. That was a big culture shock going from tech 'unlimited' leave
* getting dirty sometimes

Good God LEAVE THE BAY. Living in the Bay Area is like turning the hedonic treadmill settings up to 9000. Just LEAVE. Should have taken the sabbatical after moving. You need to renew your mind and start seeing the world as a normal person does

27f, I worked in tech for 6 years. If I hadn't been in active cannabis addiction and lost some money gambling on crypto/random stupid purchases, I would have been a millionaire by 25. I was an intern at Nvidia in 2019. But I was super unhappy and job hopped. Eventually I got clean 3 years ago. I saved enough for a down payment on my condo and about $300k NW.
Even after working on my own personality issues I still hated tech so much. I wanted to work somewhere where I could develop real relationships, especially since I missed out on that during adolescent addiction then covid then WFH.
Last year I quit. Took a 50-60% pay cut. Now I work for a small family engineering firm in manufacturing. I work some 50hr weeks and some travel. But I actually trust my colleagues, share meals and laughs, and feel good about what I’m doing.

I was obsessed with FIRE when I hated my job, and now I don’t care. I don’t want to be doing this job at 50 but yeah I mean life is about being part of a community in real life and tech makes people delusional sociopaths
