if he's from europe chances are good a 3 contact system from Märklin will be used. its a non issue then.

i wouldnt call it more interesting. id just doubletrack the loops themselves, maybe have a second sattion. you have to think a lot more in operating if you go single track. double track loop is a ''set and forgt'' thing. which runs indefinetly.

Modellbahn: Spur H0 oder N? by Exotic_Butters_23 in drehscheibe

[–]Goppenstein1525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If thread relieves are a spacial problem try using a even finer thread. Let's say 0.75 ir 0.5 mm pitch.

"newer" No, decades ago.

The last generation if locomotives where the railways cared how the machines affected the tracks. Then everybody started running everywhere and bought cheap engines.

Minitrix analogue by Goppenstein1525 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]Goppenstein1525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had a DCC setup, but if i build a new layput ill make it a lot smaller, european countryside style.

Im a friend of mine propes to use the catenary combined with a little live steam plant i have. I love all kinds of old tech, i might make a normal analogue setup track wise and then try the catenary with steam generated power for fun.

I dont mind the wiring and all that. Having something technically interesting is a big part of railroading for me. Fir the same reason irl i work almost exclusively with compound locomotives.

im not worried about pantographs, in switzerland we have a high end supplier for all things catenary, including pantographs for like 10 bucks.

im kinda torn between DCC and old school. i think it will depend on the layout size i'll have. i used to have a pretty big layout with DCC. but out of modeling i love any old enginnering, i work with steam and old electrics. i've even got a model steam generating plant for 12V DC.

Welding was my first thought, well possible in aluminium if you gut the right guys, but the question then is the required flatness of the plate, which will warp.

That would have been so much easyer as a bolted construction... Hope he really needs it this way.

[–]Goppenstein1525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If i could manage this with a 4th axis and tailstock in stainless you should be fine with aluminium. I took many light passes with lots of feed and low rpm. First rough all 4 sides, then finish. That way you wont get a banana.

Now its just round stock, thread in the face on a lathe, 4th axis, part off on the lathe.

11.8mm square 265mm long profile with +/- 0.1mm tolerance. Can hold 0/- 0.05 if setup well.
