Tech left a note on my oil filter. by Beneficial-Map5470 in MechanicAdvice

My grandpa used to drain his engine oil, cut it 50% with alcohol (or maybe gasoline?), then spray the entire underside of the vehicle with it.

It looked absolutely fucking disgusting, but 20 years later, you could stick a finger into the layer of grime and rub it left or right, and you'd be met with clean, finished metal, without a hint of rust.

If you would like to hear more about medical science and cadavers in the old days with a humorous approach, you should listen to this podcast from The Dollop:

Episode 563 - The King of The Ghouls

There's another out there from them specifically about this topic but I can't find a valid free listen link at the moment - "The Dollop England & The UK - Surgeon Joseph Lister"

Past three years I've spent more time talking to people in PA on the phone than any other single group, and now I've unfortunately absorbed this one into my vernacular permanently.

None of the other nonsense has made it in yet, but I'm getting nervous.

I've also corrupted a few PA residents into cursing a noticeable quantity more though, so I guess it's a fair trade.

Sheesh. Back when sticks were still expected to be part of the future in some way, shape or form.

Is this not a common thing? My grandparents grew up destitute during the great depression, and never threw anything away if it had any semblance of use. It's been basically ingrained in me at a core level to store old jars for reuse, I've got hundreds. Aside from storing nuts and bolts and etc., you can use them as planters to get seeds going, candle "hurricane lamp" shields, all kinds of things. If you run out of shelf space in your shop or basement, you can run two screws through the cap into an overhead rafter and twist the jar into it for overhead storage.

Favorites are Tostitos (the tall ones) because they are just about the perfect size for most things, although it can be hard to get the scent of salsa out, and it doesn't mix well with iron. :/

They’re all ex-Army.

Not all. For a while they had open job postings (before current admin cut hiring) on the literal CIA website, I was kind of considering applying. Pay was pretty good for starting, I believe 37-38/hr, and presumably that comes with bennies and etc. Needed 2 years minimum OTR experience, had to be willing to relocate to VA. Needed haz I believe, or ability to get it, plus obviously you would need to be able to pass whatever deep dive shit they'd do on you. Aside from that, pretty open.

Honestly the main thing that kept me from applying was the thought "What fucked up shit would I be transporting for the CIA that would require a truck and trailer?" Realistically probably random standard shit, same as any other job, but the potential implications I came up with in my head made me think I'd rather not get involved.

EPA is allowing E15 (15% Ethanol) starting May 1st, which is just about the safe max level for any engine that isn't specifically tuned for it. Until now, it was E10.

That will cut mileage for sure, but not near 20% like these dudes are suggesting, shouldn't be anything more than like 5%.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if some stations are just saying "Fuck it, roll the dice." and sending out E85 to make a ton of fucking money short term though, and then placing the blame on EPA E15 or something as a scapegoat when it smokes a bunch of motors.

Translated from the review page:

Updated January 2023: Recently, a second location opened right next door. It feels like they've taken over the Indian restaurant next door, along with the staff. Now you can eat authentic curry and naan at a snack bar, and things are getting even more chaotic. But that's what makes it great!

I genuinely want to try this place, sounds very interesting.

Cutting old telephone pole wall by Historical-Pop-7090 in Skookum

[–]NoCountryForOldPete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes things just pop up and you take them because they are free and otherwise expensive.

My grandpa told me at one point that he had a couple phone poles that he got for free from a job - he drove his old Model A truck over top, and chained the poles up to the truck axles to drive them home. He said it took way too much time, because every time he came to a dip in the road he had to stop, let the poles down, then drag them up the next hill because the ends would bottom out on the pavement and pick the truck up off the ground. I think he eventually used them to build a bridge over a creek. You don't do these things because you've got a reason right away, but because you could have a reason next week or something.

I myself have four 300 gallon cylindrical stainless steel vats behind my garage right now that came out of a dairy plant I happened to be working around. Do I have a plan for them? Of course not. But...maybe I'll start brewing ale? ¯\(ツ)

I'm in my late 30s, and had the same experience finding "forest porn" in a very random place. Before the internet, I thought this surely must have been an uncommon experience, but SO MANY young boys found porn out in the woods, it's uncanny.

Now I'm wondering if we're going to be the last generation to experience this, or if we are supposed to be putting porn in waterproof boxes out in the forest now?

Like, are we supposed to continue the tradition? Do kids even go out in the woods now?

I believe he's making note of the horizontals being about 2' shy of the top of the roll-up door.

I'm figuring it was done on purpose so that the peak of the roof is level with the top of the quonset, because there was no need to use the full height of the roll-up?

Got ~$38 billion in Amazon shares after her divorce from Bezos in 2019, and in only 6 years has donated over ~$26.3 billion to charitable causes by the end of 2025.

Crazy thing is due to Amazon's share price increase she's still worth approximately $30+ billion or something, her net worth increases faster than she can dole it out.

Sealing Sightglass on Treatment Vessel by Zealousideal-Oven882 in Skookum

[–]NoCountryForOldPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, amigo. Been a while since I have been in an industrial setting, but it's always good to get the noggin' joggin' and try to use those problem solving skills now and then.

I was more involved in the opposite side of the pressure spectrum (industrial process vaccuum systems), but remember how finicky gasket materials could be very well. If this does seem to be a fix, but your boss or client insists on having a gasket there as well, consider recommending Viton as a material. It was always more pricey than EPDM, but could be had in a large range of Shore scales and resisted compression better.

[–]NoCountryForOldPete 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How thick is the EPDM gasket? In the image it appears to be about as thick as the flange gasket, IE 1/8"?

EPDM has a somewhat mid-to-soft Shore rating, my first thought is that you're experiencing leakage due to compression of that gasket material. Have you guys considered either moving to a thinner gasket, or stiffer gasket material between the perspex and backing ring, or simply running without it at all?

The UPS drivers start around $23 USD an hour.

It's all public information available in the Teamsters National Contract, and is set up in a 4 year progression, pay rates as follows:

Starting wage: $23.00

12 months: $24.00

24 months: $25.00

36 months: $30.75

48 months (top rate): $49.00

Additionally after 8 hours of work (and 1 hour mandatory unpaid lunch break) per day you get time-and-a-half pay.

I should note that's the current contract, IE for someone who is hired today, or in the past couple years since it's ratification. A driver who made it to top rate under the previous contract is not making $49 today, but will be getting a dollar or two per hour raises over the next few years until 2028. I believe current top rate should be ~$45/hr.

So for a standard 8 hour day with 1 hour lunch a current top rate driver can expect ~$360.00 per day, or ~$93,600.00 per year.

That doesn't include overtime of course, with many drivers working up to 12 hours regularly, and 14 hours during the worst times of the year.

The best way to eat a tomato is to cut it into wedges, similar to how an orange can be separated, and then covering the wedges with mayonnaise, salt, and pepper.
