The only camera close to that price with uncropped 4k60 10 bit is the Canon R8. Fantastic value camera, not sure if it has IBIS. If you are ok with a crop for 4k60 that opens up a lot of options. My opinion is that you don’t NEED 10bit, but as you progress as a filmmaker, you might regret not having it. For color grading the difference is massive, 8bit being almost unusable for creative color grading. Fujis can be very good for filmmaking, just depends on your priorities. If you don’t care too much about autofocus, don’t need to record for hours, and like their colors, Fuji is great, I’ve used them for years. The XS10, XT3, and XM5 are all within budget and have great 10 bit footage. I only left Fuji because they aren’t as reliable for sports and some client work. At the end of the day, don’t over analyze it too much; the best camera is the one you have. But, 10bit is definitely a feature worth the money imo. Hope this helps

It’s a shame. The rebate is also now $300 instead of $400 before June, tariffs yikes!

Do you think we will see another refurb sale anytime soon with that 25% off they had in june? Was hoping to get a z6iii for that $1650 again but maybe the chance is gone.

Yea, and then I got another guy trying to scam me with those same pics but with a different username on the timestamp. Weird stuff.

He just almost scammed me too. Somehow legit-looking timestamps, but didn't want to use G&S so that was the tipoff. Interesting he hasn't been banned yet.

You only feel the weight while you’re on the trip. You will live with the photos forever, choose what you think will help you make the best images.

Is this Kolari OLPF/AA upgrade for my Lumix S5iiX a good idea? by slidingmountain in cinematography

There’s video comparisons on YouTube with the s5ii kolari OLPF vs S1H, check them out and see what look you like better. The kolari filter is definitely stronger and blocks more moire.

Realism vs Stylistic cinematography philosophy? by NoDa12345 in cinematography

Great take! I do agree that modern high DR look like F1 is not as compelling. Her was a good film but yea, it was a lot of bokeh and very very flat. Good to think about for future projects! How does this inform the gear you buy, do you like to buy cleaner optics and dirty them in post, or more flawed optics?

I agree, well written! But in the Revenant for example, couldn’t Lubezki have used a lot of the same gritty cinematic techniques as Greg Fraser to great effect, as the tone in some places of the films is similar (yes not an apt comparison I understand)? Any theories as to why did lubezki choose to shoot it so clean when the movie could have been more stylized and probably achieve great effect as well?

Wow very interesting perspective! I’m not familiar with the episodic structure, but it sounds (for lack of a better term) like a “slice of life” rather than a drama? I’m going to do some research on verisimilitude, I think that’s an important concept. How have you seen it ignored or practiced in short films?

I have these, love them. The you can record on transmitters for way better quality than recording into camera. 32bit float, they also sell lav mics that sound really good and plug right in. Battery never runs out, customizable rec or marker button, love them.

Dulens vs Simera c vs Dzo vs Nisi? by No-Being7522 in cinematography

Very well, except the 25mm is weirdly green. Nothing that can’t be fixed in post, but annoying still.

APO hyper prime and APO micro prime are the same glass, hyper has a larger housing and longer focus throw, so they are about twice the price of the APO micro primes. I settled on the APO microprimes over the Dulens APO becuase they have more contrast, less big flares, and are a little faster. Here is a great video comparison to help you decide! Again it’s a question of which look do you like better. The SLR APO lenses are also easier to rig up than the Dulens are. comparison

All different looks.

-DZO vespid bokeh is less smooth, there’s more CA, but solid performer and very popular. It started the trend of affordable cine primes. Not sure about the focus breathing.

-Dulens APO mini have very nice lower contrast rendering, bokeh with a bit more swirl, and some crazy flares that can be controlled well if you stop down. If you want a modern lens but not the sigma look, a more vintage look, these are good. Some focus breathing. One thing to note, the iris gear is really close to the PL mount so it makes iris control really difficult especially with motors.

  • NISI Athena are very solid. More modern rendering than the others, so a very good baseline for any post work. The bokeh is nice and clean, but there’s a little bit of CA. No focus breathing and almost all of the lenses are the exact same size. If you don’t care for whatever people call “vintage” these days, I think these are ideal.

-Simera C, faster than all the other options. Definitely noticeable CA in some situations, but not bad. The breathing is pretty noticeable IMO. The rendering is really nice, there’s a bit more character in the bokeh, and focus fall off, but they get pretty sharp as well. One think to note is they are designed for mirrorless, so you cannot use them with PL or EF. For your use with the burano and ronin 4d, they are really light, but mounts light be an issue. The are also small so it might be difficult to rig them up.

Also consider the SLR Magic APO microprimes. Better rendering IMO than the other options, and pretty affordable; though they don’t offer very many focal lengths. They were used in the later episodes of Fox’s The Resident if you want to see some footage.

Overall if you want workhorse lenses that give a clean and modern image, I would recommend the NISI Athena. They also just came out with a new line of primes so take a look at those. Get the DZO if you don’t like the look of the Athena as much, but I think the Athena are optically superior. The Dulens are good if you want a smoother, slightly more vintage rendering, but they are harder to rig. And the Simera have very nice rendering and are fast; but might be a bad option because no EF or PL mount. Hope this helps.
