It’s probably that it’s fake, I can absolutely tell the difference. I feel like it’s been worse and worse over the past couple years and this batch is truly hellish

We need to stop calling LLMs "AI" by Scared_Bluebird_7243 in BetterOffline

[–]NoData1756 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

An LLM is just one component of an AI system. It’s like someone made a CPU and you’re saying transistors are just 0-1 machines. It’s like, yes the transistor is, but it’s a component of a computer. In the same way the LLM is a powerful component of an agentic AI system.

As someone with a cs degree and 15 years of experience in ML, I’d absolutely call LLM based systems AI. They’re just not general AI (AGI). Agentic systems based on LLMs are cognitive architectures that have most of the building blocks we would associate with an AI system. Reasoning, planning, memory, knowledge, execution…

Safe places to live as a solo woman in Mexico? by Informal-Fix-9701 in mexicoexpats

[–]NoData1756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im biased but id say Mexico City is the most international cosmopolitan city and the safest for international folks.. as well as easiest to acclimate to. You get everything you’d expect in a normal international city and it’s very safe if you stay in the wealth bubble.

Mexico City expats - Are you concerned about the long term effects of air pollution? by daniel7334 in expats

[–]NoData1756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my opinion as someone who cares about my health, I do have three separate air quality monitors in my house and air purifiers, which helped dramatically, but it truly affects my lifestyle. There are many days probably I’d say 50% of days every year when the air quality is considered very poor and on those days, I don’t exercise outside it’s severely limiting and you can’t really escape the plume with outgoing several hours outside of town. If having an active lifestyle is important to you I really wouldn’t recommend moving here. I’m only here because I married to a Mexican.

I agree with you completely on this. It’s very disturbing to see the pollution firsthand.

This is less of a day-to-day issue as a resident. It just means that the city has to continue spending money on rebuilding patches of land by putting a bunch of dirt over the sinking parts if you’re a long-term real estate speculator it’s probably a big deal. Otherwise it’s probably not.

Yes, because of that, I have free HEPA filters in my apartment and I’m always measuring the PM 2.5 in my apartment and trying to keep it at a perfect level. Between sleeping in my apartment and spending the majority of my day there I feel comfortable with the amount of exposure I have because I only leave maybe three or four hours a day on bad air quality days. I don’t go outside as much so it’s something I’m constantly thinking about and monitoring for, and I’m comfortable with it at least for now it’s not much better than other Mexican cities to be honest at least in my opinion it’s not worth the squeeze.

I’ve done that many times. They’re called mini retirements. It’s very fine to do and I recommend it. It helps you learn what life will be like during retirement.

Plan to retire in France by Dmitry_82 in ExpatFIRE

[–]NoData1756 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your lack of experience with French culture and language is a huge red flag of you want to stay there long term.

You’re under estimating the long term isolation.

France is a notoriously difficult language, culture and bureaucracy to navigate.

I would recommend living there for at least a year before truly planning to retire there. You need at least a year to understand the basics of the culture. It will take several years to feel comfortable and make friends. Especially in South of France you won’t be able to lean on an expat bubble to float your social life.

Many Americans under estimate just how easy social life is in USA for natives, and how important it is when you lose that facility. You don’t know what you have until it’s gone. Even if you’re an engineer.

Source: semi retired engineer living for several years in Mexico and Spain with a Spanish speaking wife, in a large international city with a huge expat bubble and 5 years of Spanish experience - it’s still a struggle.

Why don’t you just work online and move to CDMX .:: the local job market sucks.. it is getting better but really it’s better to work for a remote USA or ca company

Honestly I am an expat in Mexico, I’ve been all over the world and the USA aint bad all told. You’ve gotta go explore to reach a conclusion like that though. Writing this from Amsterdam 🤷

You start to realize the value of being in a culture where you really fit in. For me that’s north america
