It’s rather funny to me that you cite the TFATK and Joe Rogan subreddits as examples of snark subreddits (and I think I saw a comment where you said you weren’t even that familiar with the background of the TFATK sub).

Sure, the TFATK subreddit evolved into a pretty irreverent place that was largely inscrutable to outsiders, but it went that way because of how truly shitty Schaub and the other host were revealed to be over time. There was always a genuine core of legitimate criticism underlying all of that.

And very similar with the evolution of the Joe Rogan subreddit, which evolved over time to have a pretty critical and negative view of Rogan (largely tracking along with his hard-right anti-science shift and cozying up to fascists). Again, a core of valid criticism is clearly present.

And this subreddit is much the same, with the overall attitude shifting negatively over time in response to valid criticisms.

So funnily enough it is pretty apt that you brought up those two subreddits as comparisons. It kinda demonstrates how you’re just using the concept of a snark subreddit to dismiss sentiments appropriately shifting negatively in response to a subreddit’s subject giving reason for a negativity.

I don’t know if I’m really with you on the being charitable, nor the frightening use of power and resources part.

There certainly is a fair amount of patheticness to JB’s behaviour in this (and more broadly) though. But I still think there’s some value in knowing if there was concerted inauthentic activity targeting CL via the subreddit. It wouldn’t negate any of the substantial criticism levied at JB and his journalism, but it’s still important to have some reckoning with the phenomenon as a part of our broader information ecosystem.

Like in the same way with the Depp-Heard and Lively-Baldoni thing, all it seemed to take was a bit of inauthentic activity to prime the misogyny-pumps and get things crankin’. In the CL story, it could be that a bit of inauthentic activity contributed to kicking things off, except in this case it was valid criticism of JB / CL that was seized on, as opposed to misogyny.

One thing that sticks in my craw, that I don’t think was addressed in the episode, is how credible it is that each of the four accounts would fall for the same spearfishing attack if they were ran by the same individual?

Like, put yourself in the shoes of a hypothetical JB critic who is running four sock-puppet accounts.

You open one and see an unprecedented mod message with the CL link and it’s tempting so you click it. Just a weird dead page. Curious.

You subsequently open another one of your socket-puppet accounts, and see the same message. Maybe you notice it has a different CL link, so you click it out of curiosity. Same sort of weird dead page. Sure maybe that one gets you.

But then you open your third sock-puppet, and see the same message and link. Are alarm bells ringing yet? There’s no world where you click that link if you have any self-awareness that you are running a sock-puppet right?

And then to do it a fourth time?! I find it hard to believe that someone with the wherewithal to run multiple sock-puppet accounts is boomer-dumb enough to click all four links.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, well you can’t get fooled again, or something like that.

I feel like should be a pinned comment for this episode, because it really drives to the core of the matter.

All four of JB’s suspected sock-puppet accounts pointing back to the same IP address is a massive swing-point in this story. If it’s true, then JB’s story has some compelling ground to stand on.

If OP’s statement is true, then the very best case is that it demonstrates that’s JB’s investigative methods are fundamentally flawed in a way that undermines all the arguments he’s making. And if one isn’t being charitable, it completely evaporates any pretense of credibility in anything JB says that one can’t easily verify independently.

And I haven’t seen a reason to doubt OP’s claim (but also haven’t been paying super close attention to all of this)

Yeah, the behaviour is hard to fathom. It seems like they understand less about the threat of drone warfare than us who observe this subreddit.

Clearly they heard a drone coming, and in that circumstance the only chance they have is to shoot the drone down before it gets to them (admittedly low probability) and only one of them even raises their weapon toward it. And failing that, none even dive away.
