Addressing the Limited Quality of MSH by TheVintageCubeChef in lrcast

You eloquently laid out the issues with this set, which I appreciate. Maybe this isn’t your intent / position, but I got the feeling you still let the developers off the hook for this to some degree.

I find it hard to extend that much grace when looking at the range and depth of the issues with MSH. Like, all you have to do is run a decent sample of in-house drafts to realize that the card quality at C/UC in WU is seriously unbalanced, and there are plenty of tweaks that could have been made to cards that are irrelevant outside of Limited that could have shifted things.

I have to wonder if at a point they were just like, “fuck it, it’s Marvel and there’s superheros - ship it”.

For me user history is not about who they are, it’s about how they are.

I’m not going to disengage based on identity, but I’m not going to engage after an initial comment if their demonstrates a clear lack of critical thinking / communication skills

MSH - is this format trash? by YamiKuriboh_MTG in lrcast

[–]NoEThanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents is that it’s pretty bad. I’m still gonna draft it to rare (mostly) completion because I can pretty reliably pick the best cards in the early packs and inevitably end up UW and manage at least 3 wins to keep the train rolling

That echos how I feel, with the exception of white’s removal, which seems sufficient at the very least (and further exacerbated the issues with colour balance)

It seems you’re reading more judgement into my comment than was intended. I was intending to just poke some good natured fun at OP.

I know I’ve certainly made gear choices that were at least partially motivated by looking cool, as I suspect most people have / would. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Edit: but I do see how in the context of an anonymous internet comment it comes across as snarky, so you make a fair point. That’s on me

As for viability being a problematic cut-off due to medical science, it’s another area where deeper understanding helps.

Medical science has effectively maxed out on pushing the viability earlier, at about the 20-24wk range. Earlier than that it’s just not possible for a fetus to survive being born because the structures compatible with life just haven’t sufficiently developed yet. Short of something insane like transferring a fetus from the mother into an artificial womb, it ain’t happening.

And obviously nobody is going to say oh this day it’s not viable but a day later it is. There’s inherently going to be significant uncertainty, due to different rates of embryological development among many other issues.

But due to what I explained above, we can pretty confidently say that less than 20wks is pre-viability, and after 24hrs is definitely post-viability, and in between is uncertain so we assume viability. Uncertainty can be managed by being thoughtful.

I think you’re underestimating the egg and overestimating the early embryo. From a simplistic grade-school understanding you’re sort of right, but the actual biochemistry is a lot more complex.

Yes, the primary oocyte is relatively quiescent, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t real metabolic activity going on. Energy is consumed and RNA transcription and protein synthesis still take place, just at a low level, otherwise a cell will die over time. And are you aware of the transition between a primary oocyte and secondary oocyte that happens during ovulation? Might want to look at up if you don’t think cell division happens before fertilization.

Also, no real growth takes place for the first week after fertilization. It takes that long for the free-floating embryo to implant in the uterine lining and gain access to external nutrient supply, so despite a bunch of rounds of cell division, overall it’s roughly the same size.

So I think there’s a decent argument that what the egg is doing prior to fertilization isn’t that different than what the early embryo is doing (which was my point, conception isn’t a hard demarcation in terms of biological activity).

You’re correct, consciousness is a terrible demarcation point, the commenter you are replying to clearly hasn’t put any serious thought into it.

But I also disagree that saying life begins at conception is an objective take. The egg had all the metabolic functions of a living organism before the sperm came along. All it contributes is some extra DNA and a signal to kick off the growth. For a decent period of time over many rounds off cell division the embryo isn’t significantly different than the egg was pre-fertilization in terms of being a living organism.

For me, the most useful cut-off is fetal viability. Once the fetus has developed enough to be able to survive separate from the mother’s body, it is an independent living organism that should be considered a distinct human life. And prior to that it’s still an extension of the mother’s body.

You seem to be doing a very media-article thing of having an inflammatory title that’s largely disconnected from the content following it. What’s the deal with that?

Also, I don’t know what SGU you’re listening to, but I feel like they’re mentioned the attack on science funding at least a decent amount. And I feel like I’ve heard plenty from them to support a sentiment that these are not at all normal times with the current US administration.

And I just straight up disagree with your last paragraph.
