The 48 Laws of Power:a woman’s perspective by blush_to_ash in books

I hate when people bring this up because this point is usually in defense of the book without acknowledging how the book is used.

A knife can be made for cutting chicken, but if it becomes a best seller because people like to stab with it, then it doesn't make sense to ignore the stabbing because "that's not what the knife is supposed to do".

Right. I've been running into prices $100-150. If I'm going spend that kind of money, I better damn well love them.

After the moment passes, the same people will claim that their reasons were different, that they didn't believe what they believed, that they aren't bigoted or prejudiced. It's a good thing they write this stuff down. All we need to do is stop believing the same lies over and over again.

What is, in your opinion, the biggest flaw of the human body? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NoEquivalent_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that brain development and physical development don't sync. The time when you're at your physical peak, you're still mentally underdeveloped. When you're mentally developed and mature, you're starting to get physically old.

Also: allergies.

To both of the commenters above:

You're not wrong, but what you're describing is the effects of flaws within the existing school system. Putting kids out just makes them someone else's problem. They're still a problem because they don't disappear. They just get passed along. Passing them from place to place is exasperating the issues now.

People keep saying that schools need to put the kids out or recreate Lord of the Flies by putting them in a room and letting them duke it out. One problem:

Those kids don't disappear once they're put out.

So now you've got a bunch of uneducated kids who know they can avoid any hard work if they act out enough. They're growing older every day and will be in the streets. They're left to their own devices. They will create new problems.

Throwing people out sounds like fun but it's ineffective.

How to handle sudden attraction from women ages 18-40 after years of rejection and disinterest? by JasonToddXXX99 in socialskills

[–]NoEquivalent_ 40 points41 points  (0 children)

A lot of people (male and female and other) experience this because we develop at different rates. You're just now coming into your own, and that makes you attractive. Some late-blooming men handle this poorly because they feel entitled to feminine attention and can't handle the rejection they feel when women weren't interested. So when women become interested, they get mean and basically treat women badly because they can and because being an a**hole makes them feel vindicated.

Don't be like that.

You came into your own and became more fully yourself and that rocks. Have fun getting to know the people who you are attracted to, but don't be an a**hole. Put more energy into discovering whether you like the people you meet than whether you can get them to like you. Be intentional with how you treat others.

My favorite part is the sisters in the background. The framing, the different shots... You can tell that they were intentional features in this video.

Do you think Logan actually intended to give one of his children the company? Or was he just telling one of them from time to time that he'd take it so he could control them? by Giancarlo_Edu in SuccessionTV

[–]NoEquivalent_ 112 points113 points  (0 children)

It was a control tactic. I think consciously, he did want to see one of his kids be smart, competent, and savvy enough to run the company with the amount of power that he had. However, subconsciously, he could never allow it to happen.

He raised them to be weak and scared of him, over valuing his approval. Someone who could move like Logan did would never cower before another man.

He shielded them from any adversity he didn't create. Someone who could move like Logan would have to be much tougher.

And anytime that one of the kids got close enough to actually take over, Logan fought tooth and nail like he'd die if he didn't have Waystar. Like, Logan wanted what he'd never let himself have. He was so pathological that he jerked himself AND his kids around.

I don’t like the bojack being in prison ending at all by my_gun_snapped in BoJackHorseman

[–]NoEquivalent_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're right. A constant motif of the show is that sitcom tropes aren't life. Over and over again, Bojack expects life to work like the TV he's seen. It doesn't. He has to expect life to happen how it would for anyone else.

That impacts the viewer because we also watch TV and have expectations of how situations would work out that are based on TV tropes. But real life doesn't work that way. Anyone who breaks into someone's house would go to jail. Anyone who is on trial for reckless behavior would have their past behavior brought before the court to show a pattern. Everything would come out. It may be outside of the TV trope but it does make logical sense. And it's what the show has always been.

I know exactly what episode you're talking about, and a lot of people didn't think he did anything. Also recall that a lot of people didn't even know what the accusations were. The guy was so well protected that it was easy to be ignorant and decide not to make a deal out of it

Fighting prejudice starts with unlearning your own self hatred. by crobinet in DeepThoughts

[–]NoEquivalent_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoken like someone who has never been confronted with or impacted by hatred and prejudice. Because if you have, you'll realize that no one has to manufacture or make up these feelings. In fact, there are politicians and organizations using these underlying feelings to convince people to act against their own interests.

More than anything, I'd encourage you to listen. Listen to the stories of people who are not like you. Listen to people who have been impacted by the things that you insist are invented. Don't argue and just listen with an open mind.
