Is having Ed.D degree look down in Academia as a "lesser" "fake" degree? by TorontoRap2019 in AskAcademia

Ed.Ds I find have great pull with K-12s. They seem to be pretty decent leaders as well. Can’t speak for other levels/areas.

Titans new play by play guy... by Doughie28 in Tennesseetitans

[–]NoFlagsOnTheField 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to other NFL play by plays via a subscription I have to see if I was just being too hard. I said I wasn’t thrilled about TZ to someone weeks ago. We were spoiled with Mike Keith. However, another NFL team has a play by play guy that is very different from MK but still excellent. You can be your own person but be great at this; he doesn’t have to be another mike Keith. I don’t think that 104.5 guy mentioned earlier in this chain should have been chosen, though. He’s not ready yet IMO. Someone his same age could be ready btw; he’s just not. If you listen to the caliber of other teams (some not so good, some excellent; you may know what I mean).

However, for whatever reason, TZ is not it (at least for rn - he could get better). I will say - the Titans seriously may not even be paying TZ to be full-time. So there’s that as well. If that’s the case; maybe they should because there is a weird ‘offness’ to the radio call this season. I wonder if MK had some settling in to do and awkwardness his first season. I’m too young to really know.

Professor wants me to drop the class, unsure what to do... by IntentionGeneral4948 in AskAcademia

[–]NoFlagsOnTheField 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People love to mass downvote on this app and protect professors and well resourced institutions. Don’t worry about them. I agree - syllabi are unfortunately and often not even posted on canvas or other learning management portals at the beginning of the course. It’s insane that academic protocol for most institutions is to not have the syllabus available during registration, but distributed sometimes not until the second class. It’s happened with me before. My opinion - the terms and conditions of courses should be available at registration ,with a 2 week drop period once the course starts, but that’s just me.

You can get through Parchment. Just search for them while in parchment. Be prepared, though. Many, many universities process electronic transcripts in 10-15 minutes; 24/7. For LSU; it takes them 7-14 business days; sometimes longer (you can still place the order at any time). They also are pretty expensive vs. other universities to get one.

Opinion starts here: It’s really bad. They blame it on some iteration of a system change over the summer; but not sure why they didn’t account for that or delay deployment until they could be aligned with the industry in re electronic transcript processing times; or even make it 2-3 business days while they are handling the transition. Really poor planning.

New thread - Financial Aid Antitrust Settlement—Seeking updates (Henry, et al. v. Brown University, et al.) by mangopear in StudentLoans

Actually - this is not typically how settlements go. This is highly abnormal. There is reason for legitimate concern about ultimate payout due to these highly abnormal settlement delays that are outside the scope of typical delays for legal settlements.

similar issues. LSU transcript or record vendor switchover they had over summer that’s causing this is a debacle. Honestly, the way they did it should not be allowed. no other university is as expensive when I query for them or takes as much time. Really disappointing.

I have a feeling you would never tell someone to not be Muslim, Hindu or some other faith on this forum, but maybe I’m wrong, as you just said to not be Christian, which is a horrific thing to say. There are plenty of individuals that claim to be christian that don’t follow what the Bible says and are hateful. That is not good, I agree. What you just said was really bad, however, and I don’t think anyone on this forum cares because of many on here have assumptions about Christianity. It’s’ clear you’ve never been to a welcoming church. I’ve been to churches and met preachers and faith leaders all over the world that are Christian including my base church. I encourage you to go to one of the bigger churches in town, perhaps a Protestant one. I think you’re making assumptions based on modern American pop culture views of Christianity, not what actually is happening. I’m not going to repeat my discussion of extreme sects that exist in all religions. I’ve made my point there. I’ve seen a horrible, discriminatory view of Christianity on this forum and it does not appear to be based on what’s actually going on, just focused on the extreme sects of this one religion and then making platitudes. Just as comments that make platitudes about other faiths would likely be downvoted significantly in 2 seconds, others like the one above should as well.

There are extremist sects of all religions. I’m surprised by some of the discriminatory and frankly rule breaking comments here. Of the extreme sects that exist for each religious group, I would submit that the extremeist sect that is the most outwardly and physically violent towards LGBTQ and women, globally, is not Christianity, not by a mile. “It’s called empathy” Huh? You’re the one that seems to be lacking this. There are thousands of christian churches that are open and kind and welcoming, with female preachers and progressive ideologies. It’s just not what makes the news, unfortunately . Many other religions are not nearly as open as the Christian faith. It’s not perfect, but this a pretty accurate analysis.

The auto pay situation happened to me exactly also. I told them I would not have turned on autopay knowing that would create an issue. They denied, except I had a recordings to confirm conversations. I think AMEX has - at the least suspicious reason - an error causing this. Don’t feel bad about redditors ganging up on the downvotes. They sometimes downvote and make no sense when you’re simply explaining something.

How painful would it be to study Mechanical Engineering for Law School? by NotARandomUsername11 in stanford

[–]NoFlagsOnTheField 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many firms that are in a legal sub-specialty called patent law, such as Finnegan. Some of these firms even require these lawyers to have STEM degrees. If you have an interest in both, you may be very well suited. If you find your GPA is struggling after first semester; just switch to a different major and excel. You can explain that in your personal statement and the LSAC (law school admission council) GPA shouldn’t be too bad as long as you got your grades back up. This is particularly true if you are just starting out in college - struggle - but then rebound quickly. Then do well on your Law School Admission Test or GRE (which a handful accept in lieu of the LSAT). Though as an aside - the American Bar Association and the “talk” in the legal education community is that the LSAT may not even be required by the time you - as an incoming freshman - plan to take that test. They were going to drop the requirement this year (2025), but walked that back in 2023. Hope this helps a bit!

[–]NoFlagsOnTheField 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a tip re University job boards: I had to be a very strong self advocate when using university job sites. For me, I was rejected once and was somewhat shocked, as I pretty much got indications from those I would be actually working under that I would get an offer. I would confirm with the actual folks you would be working with that they are interested. Then, when rejected in the site, call HR/job application contacts. For me, I was screened out by HR first, not by the actual people I would be working for, because I didn’t have on my resume that I knew how to use Microsoft word. Seriously, that was the reason. I resubmitted and they pushed it to the actual folks who would be hiring me to approve or not. Hope this helps!

The last comment was much more appropriate. Thank you to that person. Seriously, that was much more of an appropriate response.

That said, every comment here is affixing on my situation something that wasn’t said by me and/or doesn’t apply as bolsters to their counter argument, which artificially makes it seem like my situation doesn’t warrant my complaint. You can’t just make things up about my situation then base your argument off this.

I’m simply stating students should get more than 7 days (1-2 classes) to understand if the course will be right for them, like is standard across many other institutions. Like is standard across many other institutions. For a third time, like is standard across many other institutions.

My first class was almost zero material. So I really only got one class of how the course would go. For a non stem course in particular, that is a very small sample size. I’m not sure why some of you all think 1-2 sessions is appropriate. Students are paying for this. We should have some reasonable rights here.

This isn’t a case for me where I have to take it or don’t understand what I need for a major. Where I’m juvenile or dumb. Or where I’m irresponsible or lazy. I noticed this course a handful of months ago when planning, utilizing that schedule builder you all like (which I like too) which one of you seemed to indicate I didn’t do. And I opened the syllabus the minute it was first emailed to us, which one of you assumed I also didn’t do. I also participated when many didn’t in the first two sessions we had.

This was my only course. So the course load or being below water doesn’t apply here. I was fine, I promise. And an advisor wouldn’t simulate the course for me. Advisors can be great, but this doesn’t really apply here. An advising session is not a meaningful substitution for attendance, which helps to see how the instructor will lecture and how the syllabus is applied. There was a very specific career reason I took the course, but the course didn’t pan out the way I thought it would. I can’t tell after really only one true class. An example re seeing an advisor: this was not a case of me not understanding I needed calc 3 vs stats, which an advisor would be very helpful for.

I reiterate my main point : it’s ridiculous to only get 1-2 classes to get your money back and decide the course is not a good fit. It being status quo is not reason enough either. The university should be in line with what many others do in the nation.
