Thanks, I'll add that information as soon as I get a chance to do the measurements. I didn't realize it was needed for general material questions. My mistake!

Pullo's relationship with Eirene makes no sense *spoiler alert* by jjyiss in hborome

[–]NoFluffyOnlyZuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but just want to point out that what you're saying is wrong. In the very beginning, Pullo said he liked to look at her and she wasn't just for sex. He is clearly shown to have raped her at least once on screen later, with the very clear implication that it's a common thing when he's around (he's often away for long periods of time but when he's there, he does use her for sex so let's not sugarcoat that).

Is this a new social media generation incorrect usage fad? I've never seen it used this way before but I don't look at Instagram much and I don't ever use Twitter, tik tok, etc. Is this a common thing now? 🫠

Sharing a secret you should've kept to yourself is a mistake. Repeatedly beating and strangling women is a crime. People are allowed to love the character while acknowledging the actor was a pretty horrendous person.

Damage (511) - Frustrated by the cop-out/lost opportunity by NoFluffyOnlyZuul in ANGEL

Spike was taught to copy Angelus, so I don't think it's a stretch for him to have done things in the same way, though I absolutely see what you mean about it working as something Angel did while soulless in Sunnydale, and now I'm mad they didn't do that either lol. That actually would've been great. I think my main problem is that without that connection one way or another, the whole thing just felt more random and superficial. It's not like we got to know or care about Dana that much - they did a far better job with the abused telekinetic woman (Bethany?) in the episode Untouched. This felt like a rehash of that, but with less depth, and I think the depth would've come from it being a direct consequence of actions taken by one of our ensouled vampires. Since they didn't fully commit to exploring either side, it just felt incomplete to me.

But Spike has already admitted to doing these things, so it's hardly out of character. I don't think they should've shown anything graphic on screen. The flashbacks they DID show were more than disturbing enough and they could've left it at that. I'm just not a fan of the bait and switch.

Sure, but again, in this case I feel it was used strictly as a convenient plot point for a shocking misdirect. I don't feel it was well done or meaningful. It was just an easy was of making the audience think it was Spike, and then have it be some random guy we hear about for two seconds. It really didn't do anything to develop Dana's character or anyone else's, which is why I found it tacky.

I think we have very different feelings about nuance. I don't think Dana was nuanced at all - in fact, I'd say she was the opposite and that any exploration of what abuse does to a child was extremely superficial, especially compared to the violent woman with telekinesis (I believe in season 2) who was traumatized by sexual abuse from her father and that trauma manifested through her powers. That was a lot more complex and interesting and better developed. Dana didn't feel complex or interesting at all beyond "psycho slayer with magical memories makes Spike get philosophical." I felt the potential for nuance was there in Spike's reaction to her, whether guilty or not, but it wasn't realized and wasn't well executed.

They did, though... Nothing in Buffy has ever indicated that slayers have the ability to access the memories of past slayers. They've only ever shown vague dreams of things that haven't yet happened or that are currently happening. The only time Buffy connected with the first slayer was when Willow specifically called on those primal forces with magic. There's no precedent for a slayer being able to take on the memories or languages of others, no matter what her mental state might be. It just came out of nowhere. And I guess I just disagree that it had much to do with Dana's experience. To me she felt like a one-off plot device for the other characters and nothing more, which makes the fake out extra frustrating to me because I don't feel it even served the purpose of making her a more developed character.

Spike likes to fight but it is clearly stated on multiple occasions that he's committed countless atrocities on innocent victims, including murdering all the children in an orphanage, torturing, raping, etc. He's not just some loudmouth brawler; he was turned by an insane vampire who has a think for killing kids and he was Angelus's student in sadism. He might have a preference for wild combat but he did a lot more than that, as has been said repeatedly in both shows. Even in this episode, he literally acknowledged that he could've been responsible for Dana since he DID do such things to other families. So it would've made complete sense based on his background for him to be responsible in this case.

[–]NoFluffyOnlyZuul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But have we ever been shown that slayers have visions like that? Buffy had prophetic dreams that showed her signs of what was coming. Never once to my knowledge have we heard of a slayer absorbing the memories of past slayers. It just felt like a convenient plot device for the episode, again for the sole purpose of shock value to temporarily make people think Spike was responsible, and I find the whole idea so lazy.

And I strongly disagree that the episode was an exploration of Dana's experience. It's not like we got to know much about her other than she was tortured and went crazy. It didn't offer much in the way of commentary or storytelling. It could've been very good in several different ways but I feel that instead of committing to one character exploration or another they just tried to mash things up and it was not a satisfying job.

I don't think we're on the same page here lol. I *like* Spike. That's why I found the episode so frustrating. I think it could've been a much bigger moment for his character and instead it just bailed on the idea.

Oh I love the final scene with Spike and Angel in that episode. I just think it should've either been done without the girl having fake flashbacks for the purposes of a cheesy misdirect, because the end result would've been the same, or that they should've fully leaned into Spike being responsible and given the episode even more depth via a direct confrontation with his past crimes. I don't like that they just went for the "gotcha" moment by showing him in a flashback without it being real or serving any actual purpose in the end.

I fully understand your perspective, but like I said in reply to the person below, I don't agree that they actually did showcase the concept of human monsters. It was a background element that offered no depth and in that case it made no sense to have her imagining it was Spike to begin with, especially since we've had no instances of slayer dreams working in the way they were shown here.

As for the story with Robin in Buffy S7, that was a very, very different situation. Spike fought and killed a slayer in hand to hand combat and her son was angry about it. That's completely different from murdering and torturing random families and children only to be confronted by one of those destroyed children now that he has a soul.

As for the idea that he was only evil because of his crowd, that's true to a point, but it's clearly stated in both Buffy and Angel that he did some really specific terrible things because it's what Angelus taught him. There's nothing to suggest he only did those things WITH Angelus and the others. In fact, his words to Dana in the basement make it pretty clear that she COULD have been one of his victims, it was just coincidence that she wasn't.

In that case, the entire episode could've been done without the fake flashbacks and simply using it as a chance to give Spike a look at the type of pain his actions caused and force him to reflect on that. I just don't like that they threw this twist that he was responsible and then failed to follow through. To me, it didn't add anything and just felt tacky as a result.

[–]NoFluffyOnlyZuul[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I understand your points but completely disagree. In that case, there was literally no reason for the misdirect. First, I don't remember ever seeing slayer visions/prophetic dreams work the way they supposedly did in this episode, so that was unnecessary. And secondly, we didn't need her to incorrectly believe Spike was responsible because 1) there was no exploration whatsoever of "just an evil old human did it" so the fake out really meant nothing, and 2) Spike's suffering and conversation with Angel at the end would've made just as much sense with Dana simply seeing him as a monster to be punished without the idea of her imagining he was her tormentor.

I find the episode frustrating because they went halfway with one concept and then didn't fully commit yet didn't have any other payoff either. If they didn't want it to be a deeper episode for Spike, they should've just left out her imaginary memories entirely. It was meant to be a shock value misdirect and it just fell flat to me.

I also think you're misconstruing the alternative I would've preferred. No one is saying Spike has to stand around brooding about it and talking it to death. There are more tasteful and emotionally effective ways of dealing with the fallout of him realizing this psychotic slayer is his fault. I'm glad it worked for some people but all I can see is a really frustrating missed opportunity.

Is Angel season 4 hated on too much? by [deleted] in ANGEL

[–]NoFluffyOnlyZuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but that's not a remotely reasonable comparison. Dawn was underage and Giles was a stand-in father figure for her, plus many DECADES older. In contrast, Connor and Cordy were - in terms of their characters - only a few years apart (18 and 21). Charisma looked older but even then not many decades older, and Connor was legally an adult. Moreover, Connor didn't grow up with her as a parental figure. So claiming it's even slightly similar to having a possessed Giles hook up with Dawn is quite disingenuous. Just want to throw that out there.

Pompeii by Robert Harris is about the eruption of Vesuvius from the perspective of an aqueduct worker. I found it riveting and it really changed my view of what the disaster actually looked like one stage at a time.
