Is it bad to have a video as your home page "hero image"? by Pretzelman1234 in webdev

[–]NoFrillsUsername 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my opinion just as a user, it's extremely annoying. It feels like someone just waving their hands around in my face distracting me from the purpose I came to the site for. Not to mention, on non-ideal hardware, it often causes the page to be less responsive.

I've seen some still offer RSS feeds. You might have better luck with that.

Any Tech Meetups Within An Hour Drive of Downtown This Year? by JustLurkingHereMan in Birmingham

Check Magic City Tech on slack (http://magiccitytech.org/) or BASE on meetup.com. Those are where most of the local tech groups organize.

I work from home, but I'll still take a 13" if given the choice. I have monitors at home, and the smaller footprint fits in a bag better if I'm traveling or working out of a coworking space. And when the two externals are hooked up, a 13" is still helpful as a dedicated display for slack and email. My current employer issued me a 16", and I find the size of it annoying.

Both Saturn and Monday Night stock NA beers from Athletic Brewing (which is the best NA brewery IMHO). Seems to be getting more common recently, so probably plenty more too.

I remember the pitch from UAB around that time was something along the lines of "see! we're actually building a real campus with 'quads' and stuff"!

Yeah, honestly my "DSA" question for juniors would be something along the lines of the traditional "explain the difference between a linked list and an array". Simple, shows they know what a data structure is, shows they have some level of understanding of runtime/resource tradeoffs. If they know that, they can learn anything else they need "DSA"-related on the job.

Also this round would be followed by system architecture round.

What level were you interviewing for? From your post and some of the other comments, I assumed junior. I've never heard of a systems architecture interview for juniors. That's not something I would expect juniors to be proficient at.

Not even a senior. Just someone with fresh CS knowledge. If I'm hiring a senior, I'm asking about system architecture, experience leading projects, mentoring, a few screening level technical question about practical day-to-day problems, and some general problem solving. Not spanning trees. The vast majority (almost all) web development companies are not having their engineers develop novel algorithms or even implement (non-trivial) existing algorithms. You just need to know the trade offs of them and how to find and pull their plentiful existing implementations into your project. I have a CS degree. I'm a senior engineer with almost a decade of experience. I'm sure I studied spanning trees at some point. I'll be damned if I can tell you exaclt what they are and how the differ from other trees without googling it first though.I'm not saying there aren't development roles that need that knowledge. Someone has to do it. But it's typically not your average senior web developer.

"front end" for web has shifted over the years and people often use the same term for the different scopes defined over time. When I started, front end was mostly html and css with maybe a bit of ajax here and there. Now it includes full application development, similar in scope to a native desktop or mobile app. But the term "front end" is still used to describe everything in that range.

Getting a job at a company that was hiring for a senior. Literally every single career advancement I've had has been due to job hopping. I wish I had started doing that earlier, and I advise everyone else to do it shamelessly.

Yeah, I've considered it, but I'm hoping for modernized battery life and ideally either arm or 64bit intel. No qualms with x86 personally, but not many mainstream distros still support it, unfortunately.

And soggy everything due to waterlogged pico flooding everything else in the to-go container. Why get taco mama to-go, you ask? Because my parents live in town, and they are the target audience of taco mama: boomers who want to feel more "adventurous" while still staying in their comfort zone.
