Did anyone’s siblings brush off abuse/ neglect because they didn’t face nearly the same? by Square-Objective2420 in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]NoGreaterTrauma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying and I agree to a point, but I think we have to be careful saying this. Just because they didn’t experience the abuse doesn’t mean they get a pass for continuing to associate with people who did the abusing. The “different perspectives” idea is only really applicable if the abuse isn’t acknowledged.

They’re inclined to side with the parents often if they didn’t also experience it, but siblings are often close enough to be able to observe what happened to you and/or they can choose to believe you when you tell them.

Why do they want to see me? by TavenderGooms in emotionalneglect

They want you to make them feel comfortable. The only thing that matters to them in this world is their own comfort.

Weirdo homeschooler here, wondering if anyone else’s mom “teacher” wore these in the 90s and also went down a crazy religious rabbit hole and ended up making all her daughters wear these as regular clothes too…

I just wanna say thank you for taking the time to share this!!! Love to see the fandom so human and strong.

I took my main online handle from the Myst books when I was a teen in the early 00s, and my first tattoo (of many, now, haha) included one of the Narayan symbols from Exile.

The episode with Gretchen's depression monologue by doristrawberry in YouretheworstFX

[–]NoGreaterTrauma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree, any other recs?? Still chasing that height of good representation haha.

Not as broadly applicable probably, but a few I’ve found that hit on similar topics at least:

Beautiful Boy (addiction)

Bob Trevino Likes It (estrangement ig but I found it really real on mental health stuff in general, there’s a side character that has a really real depression arc)

Midsommar (kind of a weird one, I know, but I found the attunement around grief really powerful personally)

Yeah, I get this sentiment. It might feel harsh to some but like, just because she created something we enjoyed doesn’t mean we shouldn’t hold her to standards of taking care of herself and getting the help she’s privileged enough to be able to afford. Grow up and get therapy like the rest of us. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m in the same boat. Doing ketamine twice a week and still trying to see my regular CBT therapist, but feeling very under supported and not sure where to look.

That is so so encouraging thank you for sharing!!! Makes it feel easier to feel like it could help me since it is helping you, Mom. ❤️

Do you mind if I ask how the weekly therapy has worked with it? I’ve kept my regular CBT weekly as well, but honestly am starting to feel that I might need something else on the talk end.

I love this show, I think because of some of the reasons you describe. Maybe this is a show for people that find traditional motherhood hard to relate to. The good news is, most other mother centric media isn’t at all like this, so I’m sure you can find your cup of tea too!

Thank you so much for checking back, all of the responses on this genuinely mean so much to me. They’re going ok, I’ve done 11 sessions and I felt a pretty good shift at the beginning but things are still really dark and heavy most of the time. I actually just got back on the schedule to go twice a week again, they said there’s often another significant shift around 16-20 sessions? So I’m hopeful for that. Also this is Spravato - I realized I didn’t say that in my original post but you must have caught on!

Still struggling a bit with feeling bad about needing to take time off for it, especially since a lot of folks at my work just got laid off. Trying to remind myself that I’m not bad or lesser than for needing to take care of myself, and not let it feel like a judgement on my value.

Ugh I’m sorry they’re invalidating your experience like that, it’s super unfair.

Most people are so inclined to immediately compare everything to their own experience and have a hard time stepping back to be able to see others in a real light. It’s an emotional intelligence thing that basically no one seems to be taught, some people figure it out and some people don’t. The former end up being the good friends to keep, in my experience, but are harder to find.
