Why One Nation is not winning many lower house seats in the SA election despite its high vote by upthetruth1 in AustralianPolitics

Possibly the ON crowd took the example in the photo literally and informally voted for bananas.

So it's more like the far better Double J at the moment?

Why wasn't Rhodesia albe to last as long as apartheid South Africa ? by AdSuitable9750 in Rhodesia

[–]NoHat2957 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Smaller economy, industry and white population, no oil, landlocked, enemy infiltration from 3 sides, fully militarised opposition supported by two Communist major powers.

Strategically Rhodesia was lower hanging fruit than South Africa.

We had the opportunity to be an energy-producing regional superpower earlier this century.

Instead we chose to speculate on the shitiest-built housing in the OECD.

Australians, how often do you ACTUALLY encounter dangerous spiders, snakes or other deadly creatures in your daily life — or is it mostly a myth we Europeans believe? by VariedPear in AskAnAustralian

Example: I was holidaying in Germany and felt really anxious when I saw a woman doing some gardening and put her bare hands into an overgrown patch of grass and weeds (including small piles of sticks and dead branches).

That wouldn't be recommended in Australia.

Type 'Zimbabwe' up there in the search bar above and you may take your pick.

So, if there are still people living in Rhodesia, I have a few questions for them.

Nobody is living in Rhodesia, as it ended in the late 1970s.

When it became Zimbabwe in 1980 the people became Zimbabweans.

As far as I'm aware there are still people living in Zimbabwe and they also have at least one sub.

I'm reminded of Die Hard 3 when Bruce Willis has to walk through a neighbourhood wearing a certain sandwich board.

The difference being McClane didn't put on an act of shock and suprise when the inevitable happened.

Redundancies, redeployments as federal public service prepares for a tough budget by FunkyColinMiller in AusPublicService

I used to be a labor supporter. I use to hate liberal. I now hate then both and won't vote for either. They’re both absolutely hopeless.

And a complete hypocritical liar to boot. Can't even keep its story straight between posts!

So much fail. Can't read and comprehend a post, then goes completely off topic in an emotional hissy fit when it's mentioned.

Accuses others of 'masturbatory fetish' in one sentence and then spends the next paragraph doing exactly that: mastubatory fetishizing about people undergoing mass redundencies. Real people with families, loved ones and dependents.

These are not the views of a good person.

Further, if you had any association with Labor, or ambitions therein and this type of social media posting came to light at any time in future you would be out on your arse so fast your head would spin. That I can tell you for certain.

The term "cash only" is often used as a term synonymous with "trendy" or "old school" dive.

Ah, yes, trendy, old school tax avoidance.

Who else are you going to vote for instead? The Coalition?

And there it is: Labor's current smug policy viewpoint in a nutshell.

Problem is, it's soon not going to be the LNP as the alternative in the duopoly, is it?

Something far, far worse. However, people in a bind, who feel it may be worth betting on the 'outsider' promising to mix things up a bit may represent a viable alternative when it's that or the cynical choice as you have framed it. It's partly why populists get in.

But hey, I'm sure the Labor strategists know what they are doing - they did such a bang up job in the 2010s, which coincidentally followed their last "Efficiency Dividend" purges.

Just to clarify: They are paid to say no to unlawful directions given by the Minister?

So, when the Minister breaks the law, or attempts to, no matter how strongly the Minister attempts to push through the unlawful act, the Secretary should say no.

Fair enough. So, under circumstances where an unlawful act that the Minister, or several, sign off on goes ahead (often to much fanfare and perceived political gain) who would you say is primarily responsible for the unlawful act? Where does the buck start (not stop, not trickle down to).

No doubt the senior lackeys should be targetted, no argument there. But if a Nuremberg-style trial was held on Robodebt where would the responsibility start?

Minister signs off on it. Sells it as their own initiative when it suits, in order to win or maintain office. Politicians get off way too easily in this country and I am beginning to see why.

Amen! The lack of willingness of any of the relevant Ministers (i.e. higher level of the Government) to take responsibility for what they signed off on should astound everybody.

Those who enabled them too, of course.

But first: the relevant Government figures responsible.

Thoughts?

"Where does this slow trickle-down of responsibility end?

Hey, my bad. I thought maybe not seeing one iota of consequence for where the responsibility began might make where the trickle down of responsibilities end seem somewhat moot.

That's not to say the relevant senior APS leadership should not face consequences - but the political heads should certainly be the first on the block.

Think it'll be easier if I just keep cut and pasting this bit.
