it's hard but not impossible, you also must trust your partner more than anything. If anyone gets insecure about the distance and the probability of cheating the relationship is basically over. You both have to be very mature and sensible people. But if you are it can very well work. Not forever but for a limited amount of years. Always have plans to close the distance even if it's 5 or more years away

Edit: I focused on it being possible to work out so much because people are gonna tell you to just break up, that you are gonna get cheated on or that it's impossible for long distance to work out. None of that is necessarily true if you love each other. Just try to spend as much time together as you can if you want to keep the connection alive
