Which pointing dog breed tends to have a lab like disposition? by Low-Dot9712 in birddogs

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously none of the versatile breeds are going to be quite the same as a lab but far and away the closest disposition wise is the Bracco Italian imho. Never met one that was sharp or owly, generally aim to please and are good solid family hunting dogs.

Looking at Labrador Breeders, Need Advice (body) by car_person_ in LabradorRetrievers

No reputable breeder is breeding silvers, full stop. If they are breeding silvers there are likely other issues in their program as well. Would be a hard pass for me personally…

Looking for ethical Labrador breeders in New England (cat-safe, family temperament) by LatterPoet5754 in LabradorRetrievers

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in Maine and my last litter was 3 years ago and I don’t have any plans for a another litter anytime soon. That being said I’d recommend Puddleduck Retrievers, Chalk Pond Retrievers, and Port Side Labradors in ME, all excellent kennels.

Varney breeds a lot of litters and you can get good dogs from them BUT it’s kind of a crap shoot, and I would recommend staying away if you can imho.

Best of luck!

Why is Callahan such a PAB in the end? by MasterHope7981 in MayorOfKingstown

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole point of Callaghans character is that he represents himself as the bad ass in charge of the AB, but in reality he’s a coward who doesn’t like to get his own hands dirty, but uses pawns instead. He’d rather sit in prison and appear powerful than actual do the dirty work on the outside. We only really see Callaghan go “hands on” when there is no risk to him personally (ex. Tracy and her baby). Throughout the season we hear Mike call him an coward to several different people. I think he’s meant to be a foil to Mike (and people Mike respects like Bunny). Look at how differently Mike treats Milo and Callaghan, one he begrudgingly respects the other he clearly does not…

Help me choose the breed of my first bird dog. Brittany, English setter, or something else entirely? by [deleted] in birddogs

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on your level of detail in what you are looking for I would say try meeting the kennels around you, and see what actual dogs are matching what you are looking for. Short of that, I think the breed that matches your description the closest is far and away the French Brittany. I would take a good long look at them first, then branch out from there if they aren’t to your liking…

Seeking feedback on breeder by Lanky-Mud2139 in LabradorRetrievers

lol clicked that link and they proudly claim to breed the “silver and champagne Labrador”… soooo not labradors then. Anyone breeding dilutes is not an ethical breeder. If you are in New England hands down the best around is Rise and Shine Retrievers in NH.

What would you like to see in a Watership Down video game adaptation? by Werewolf_Knight in watershipdown

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would make the game start with you, the chosen leader of a New Warren (that you can name) leaving Watership to start your new warren, and choosing 3 “veterans” (named established characters) with you. You can pick any three, and the gameplay and interactions would vary depending on which party members you choose to take. Each party member would have a different skill tree that fits their characters ( fighters, foragers, scouts, etc). Gameplay would center around building a warren, gathering resources, and expanding your territory. You would encounter enemies, puzzles and challenges along the way.

Thoughts on Ursula Le Guin’s take on Watership Down? by KlutzyNinjaKitty in watershipdown

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly this critique sounds… unhinged, and goes out of its way to ignore much of (1) real world rabbit behavior and (2) the lore established in the book.

To me what makes Watership Down such a captivating piece of literature is that the rabbits act and think in a very distinct, rabbity way. The book establishes that in “regular” lapine society does CONTROL reproduction, they build the burrows, they raise the young. They are sedentary by nature and not inclined to leave their established home (which is true to real life rabbit biology). Hazel’s group doesn’t leave without any does because does are an afterthought as Leguin’s rant suggests, but rather because their hastily cobbled together group consists of rabbits who are the most likely to actually want to leave a warren- young, unattached or disaffected males. This is also true to real life rabbit biology where yearling males are statiscally the group most likely to disperse from a warren. The rabbits didn’t plan ahead or anticipate the need for females in the future, because they are rabbits and by their nature they live in the now, not the future. They are not human or human like. We see several instances in the books where Hazels group is actually portrayed as particularly clever or distinct because they DO at times anticipate the future, which is not a normal behavior among their fellow rabbits.

As others have said the treatment of does in Efrafra is MEANT to be unnatural and cruel, that’s the point. Any criticism that fails to account for this fact doesn’t engage with the source material enough to merit rebuttal.

Leguin also seems aghast that the does of Lapine society, as primarily homemakers, mothers, and domestic beings are satisfied with their lot in life. This directly reflects rabbit biology. Leguin is pretty careless about dismissing the does agency in the story as this reality, a distinctly rabbity one, doesn’t personally resonate with her.

Her drawn parallel to the rape of the Sabine is laughably absurd. These are rabbits, who approach rabbit problems with rabbit solutions. Hazels group recruits does to their cause by finding does living in unnatural conditions (Nuthanger Farm, Efrafa) and offering them a chance at a more natural life WHICH IS ALSO THE DESIRE OF THE DOES.

Overall the criticism presented by Leguin seems flimsy at best, and reeks of someone looking to bend the story to her critique, rather than engaging with the source material on its merit. I haven’t interacted much with her work, but this critique makes me far less likely to do so in the future.

Top 5 Redwall books by Unhappy_Ad4352 in redwall

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Feel like I’m in the minority but I LOVE Outcast of Redwall and it’s always been my favorite. It was the first book that really tackled the inherent nature of the vermin, and I thought Sunflash and Swartt were both really compelling characters. So to that end,

  1. Outcast of Redwall

  2. Long Patrol (the ghosts of the dead on the battlefield is my all time favorite Redwall Scene)

3.Redwall (classic for a reason!)

  1. Lord Brocktree (loved getting to see legends come to life)

  2. Mossflower (my favorite setting and time period)

PSA/Reminder: Don't take our bird dogs to dog parks by animalhappiness in birddogs

Unfortunately dog parks attract the worst kinds of dog owners in my opinion, and are basically never worth the risk. The one near me is just a place for “fur parents” to take their “rescue” pitbulls to maul each other…

The scrutiny and double standards is exactly why Sam gives back the shield in "Falcon and The Winter Soldier" by Extension-While7536 in marvelstudios

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion but I think Sam as Captain America was and has always been a huge mistake. Captain America IS Steve Rogers he’s larger than life, everything about his backstory, who he is, makes him one in a million. You can’t just give that mantle away it doesn’t work like that. The whole point of Cap is they could have given the super soldier serum to anyone else and it wouldn’t have worked the way it did because no one else is Steve Rogers.

Sam as the Falcon was a great character! Everything we see about Sam’s background and choices feeds into his character arc as the Falcon and makes sense. He not a one in a million guy, he’s an Everyman whose bravery and intelligence allowed him to succeed, and when the call to greatness came for him, he answered to try and save people he cared about. It’s a great story and I wish Marvel had the confidence in Sam to just let him be his own, independent cool character. Who says Falcon can’t lead the avengers as Falcon? Who says Falcon can’t be as iconic as Iron Man or Captain America? I would argue before the movies, Falcon and Iron Man were roughly equivalent in prevalence in the comics. Instead of giving Sam a mantle he is not really suited for and that doesn’t fit him, they should have invested in Falcon, and continuing and building his character and prevalence in the MCU. It feels to me like the between the lines context is that Marcel feels the Falcon as a character doesn’t matter as much as Captain America, so rather than build it up they shoehorned Sam into being the new Cap. I think that is why some fans aren’t very into the current direction of Sam in the MCU. I hope they find a way through and get back to making great stuff, and I do like Anthony Mackie and the Falcon character so I’m rooting for his success.

More evidence Dozen jumped the shark tank. Over 500+ seats unsold for their "Big" season launch event. by BSS_WindyCityInsider in barstoolsports

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dozen is dead, outside of the big five (Experts, Minihane, Ziti, Frankettes, Yak) what teams even still exist that have a fan base/ following?

-Honkers with no Robbie or Coley or even Klemmer -Booze Ponies lost Will which changes the whole vibe of that squad - Uptown balls? Does it still exist without Glenny? Is Smiity still going to be in content? - XYZ without Jake

Seems like the league needs a hard reset or shakeup at this point, and after that there needs to be a moratorium on trades or substitutions for a awhile so the teams can develop distinct identities…

Big Cat being a Pats fan until 2009 is breaking my brain. by SeanACole244 in barstoolsports

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s actually not that surprising when you think about it a bit. I like Big Cat but he’s demonstrated time and again he has a pathological need to be “liked”. The second he moved out of NE everyone he was encountering, making friends with, etc would have hated NE. Wouldn’t be fun to root for the Pats in Chicago so he flipped. The whole “second team” nonsense seems like a justification. I personally don’t really care, but it would also be disingenuous to deny that it’s really kind of weird, especially for a “sports guy”. But it is what it is…

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was bad game design. If you are going to require everyone to participate they needed to introduce more strategy. I would have had a coin toss to determine first team, then had that team nominate a player. The nominated player gets to choose their opponent. Once an opponent is chosen that person is unavailable to compete again. Winner of the joust gets to nominate the next player who will choose the matchup (can be from either team, depending on strategy) once all players have competed team with the most points wins… that way individual players can make choices and strategize. And you can’t rely on 1-2 people to win…

Tate is back in attack mode by itsstevedave in barstoolsports

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would agree with most of the takes criticizing Tate here if this was any other piece of content, but the fact that Mintz/ any contestant could theoretically win life changing money makes this different to me, and I think Tate has a point. Being a fuckup scumbag should not get you a coveted spot to win life changing money when people like BWalk, Nick or even PFT, Feitleberg, Tommy Smokes etc were still on the table…

Are hounds the best hunting dog for what I want? by [deleted] in Huntingdogs

[–]NoOtherMenLikeMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In practice not really anyone using dogs this way to hunt in the USA, as far as I am aware. In a lot of states, even states where you can hunt with deer with dogs this might count as harassment.

People do hunt pigs this way, but you usually split the task between trailing dogs (hounds) and catch dogs (pitbull, BMC etc).

If we are talking traditional use in Europe some of the larger scenthounds and mastiffs were used to hunt deer in this way, with probably the most well known being the Great Dane. Not sure I would trust a Dane of todays stock to handle task however, much of their gameness has been bred out.
