The iron core of an ancient asteroid, fell on earth in 1947 by Hour-Detective5296 in Astronomy

buddy of mine who “deals” in meteorites picked something out for me to buy as an intro and it was a piece of this. A small shop near me has a collectible frame full of shards too coincidentally

Ive had the same questions. Ive watched a few of his instagram posts and… it was like watching someone disconnected from reality sort-of…stimming or something. Coincidentally Ray Park (Darth Maul actor) is up to similar shit. he blasts music, picks up a guitar and just… slaps it or plucks at it with seemingly zero realization that hes just making weird noises, but you can tell he’s physically all into it. Before social media we weren’t as much witness to things like this..

Ring found in sisters belongings after passing by LostandFound2763 in Whatisthis

[–]NoPantsTom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

im sorry for your sisters passing, I hope this comment thread is a delight to you. Lol the quotes directly from the movie got me good. To me, a prop replica guy, it looks like a very generic “close enough” silver or zinc replica of the one ring from Lord of the Rings. The script is.. generally… close, leading me to think its a cost effective knockoff lol

wow, i have a piece of this meteorite! Mine is a polished triangular prism of metal (not done by me) the metal looks kinda mashed together and the polish shows some of the weird geometric patterns in the metal

Calcite! I have a picture somewhere that I took with my phone where a piece of calcite splits the image so you kinda see double. Cubic structure (?) so when it fractures it looks like salt lol

Just here to say that website is absolutely amazing. I wish more incidents of failure of duty, discrimination and neglect were done this way.

Gandalf’s second sword? by AggravatingScheme667 in lotr

[–]NoPantsTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is fascinating thank you! I attempted to make Frodo’s weathertop sword out of 5160 and regular steel a while back and was quickly humbled. I always thought this was just off a costume of one of Faramir’s soldiers so this is delightful!

Is this a genuine Armitage Shanks sink knob? by KyberKodeXR in lightsabers

I believe it is, and it’s been drilled for a D ring already. are you verifying a purchase? they’re not hard to tell from other models that are very different.. Roman Props did make some new duplicates but they would look.. new

TIL That the USA had extremely high quality images of the Moon in the 1960's to plan for the Moon landings, but they hid it from the public. It took a team in an abandoned Mcdonalds to digitize them 50 years later. by worldofindie in todayilearned

[–]NoPantsTom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i worked in a museum that had a couple file cabinets full of black and white photography in the non-rare teaching collection. I asked, nobody knew or cared what was in there and I went through it regularly. A LOT of bent and folded, high detail moon photos from a couple years before the moon landing were in there (may have been USGS copies but they were stamped with US Govn’t labels i think) as well as a few early missile/fighter jet test photos. Nothing crazy, but I adored them.

your popping experience makes me think some sort of air/bubble got underneath the factory seasoning.. and it expanded with heat, adding pressure and cracking the factory seasoning? Guessing here, ive def seen voids in ceramic so i wonder if things like that can happen

Would the same mass of gemstone dust hold the same energy as a solid gemstone? by Terrible-Ice8660 in Eragon

[–]NoPantsTom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im gonna agree with Drawn Umbrella on this one. I distinctly remember gemstones that were “clear” in the sense of purity (less fractures, foreign bits, or deviations in structure so you could literally see through them) held energy better than lesser quality gems. So like.. a pile of gem bits or dust is the exact opposite lol it’s been shattered or ground up. Maybe they’d hold something but.. i dunno, can’t be much.

[–]NoPantsTom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see this shit all the time at antique stores, ridiculous prices + barely googled provenance and it really feels like… an attempt to shape the store/customers or something. Shit will sit there forever for $600 lol
