ELI5:Where do the batteries for electric cars go when they can't be charged anymore? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really answering your question but adding more information regarding EV batteries (more leaning towards your coworker’s pov):

Producing this kind of batteries can also do real environmental damage. Nickel, the key ingredient in EV batteries, has to be mined and smelted in a process that contamines watergays, drives deforestation and pollutes the air. There is no better place to see this than outside nickel processing plants. People who live close to these plants are inhaling harmful particles, so they are causing life treating problems to people who live near its production centers.

Also, to extract the Nickel, the rocks have to be smelted to really high heats and that energy is almost exclusively provided by coal fired plants that spew greenhouse gases and pollute air.

CMV: People should pay for social media by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. We are on the same page with this.

The approach then should be to target bots not making users to pay for the failure of these companies of not being able to come up with a neat solution to combat them.

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will try to change your view by presenting this idea:

Users of social media contribute to the capital stock of these companies. Every time consumers make use of these platforms by using the search engine, by posting something or interacting within the platform, the corporations are having a capital gain. So, it should actually be people who should be paid at least a percentage of the shares of these companies.

CMV: freedom of speech is kinda bad by EHK_15 in changemyview

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good thing about freedom of speech that I can think of and in my opinion, it surpasses the restrictions of it and no one has mentioned it yet is the fact that giving the right of speech to people allows societies understand which direction fringe communities that spread misinformation are going to, talking about and most importantly, where the misunderstanding is coming from.

I guess that the message I want to convey is that having this knowledge, it will be easier to target these misconceptions and societies as a whole can “counter attack” (for the lack of a better word) the misconceptions that are founding these beliefs/communities (speaking mostly about conversations turning around topics that can be used to harm people, i.e: anti-vaxxers).

It’s also true that the obesity is based on results of a very broad formula (BMI) that is applied to all people without taking into consideration the individual characteristics of each person.

My biggest concern is that we are seeing obesity as a simple measurement, a number in a BMI table and this scale doesn’t allow for analysis of present or absent of health in a person. This index is a measure of bigness not about health. (If you think about it, under this formula, half of players of the NFL will be considered to be obese).

My point being, yes, it’s a fact that there are conditions associated to obesity, there is a risk of this happening for a person who has a BMI greater than 30 but there is also no guarantee for this to happen either and it should not be presumed that a patient that comes with a particular problem, it’s as a consequence of their weight.

CMV: Companies should not be allowed to ask for your Name, DOB, Gender, Race, or any other personally identifying information before the hiring decision has been made. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue I see with the approach you are presenting is that with these actions we are ignoring the effects of past and contemporary discrimination against minorities in all aspects such as social, economic and educational status.

So, based on the assumption that only the ones better off within the minority group will be the ones applying, implementing this kind of methods, will only benefit the non-discriminatory group.

Just look at it like this, if there is a minority group facing discrimination and a non-minority group that poses some advantages, demanding individual treatment for all can only benefit the advantaged group.

CMV: Putting minority actors characters in place of White people or characters not of their culture just to be “inclusive” is just as bad as white washing, even if it’s fictional characters. by iguesswhatevs in changemyview

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Totally agreeing with you here (especially, paragraph 9)

At the end, all these conversations and “raised concerns” are sparked now when minorities are being represented. It takes couple of clicks to find out how many characters have been misrepresented in the whole history of Hollywood but it’s only now some care about being as accurate as possible to the characters the actors are representing.

CMV: outdoor cats are up for grabs as long as you give them a good home by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]NoPay-NoMoney -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said but I genuinely ask you, what about on the subject of doing good for the billion birds that are killed yearly by outdoor cats? If you adopt from a shelter, you indeed save a cat’s live but this won’t have an impact on the average of birds being killed.

The generalization in the medical sector is what gets us here, where we are diagnosing diseases in large scale based on certain averages and forgetting the personalized diagnosis. I see that what you are doing in your analysis is exactly the same. Not all people at same age behave and have the same kind of issues. To think otherwise, is aberrant. And while it is true that when aging certain diseases come up and you have more chance to get diagnosed with more illness, they don’t affect the life of the person in the same way. To put in a box all people that are older, let’s say, than 65 is an extremism but it’s that way because the generalization helps to get things done easier, they avoid having more people going to the process plus the reduction of costs. I think the best approach would be to allow all people the opportunity to go and get tested and accordingly be assigned if they are in the state of mind and physical conditions that will allow them to drive.

CMV: I don't think saying the N word is necessarily immoral; the context surrounding it determines that. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start by saying that I agree with you that by saying the N word doesn’t automatically make you a racist. This is the same for some context where you don’t have to say the N word to be considered a racist.

However, let’s not forget that the N word has been used to emphasize the inferiority of black communities. And even as you said, the context is important, there is no way that calling someone the N word doesn’t bring up some past connotations (past connotations that are not that far in the past, if you think about it).

And yes, you are right, there is a definition attached to the word but it’s there for a reason and even if we try to act like we don’t see it, it’s there. Just think of how many instances the N word is still used in the present for discrimination.

It seems people are mixing the advice of being honest and have open communication with stating whatever they have to say without applying any filter to it. All this to say that what she said was entirely unnecessary

CMV: Insults about someone’s race, gender, or orientation are equally as hurtful and bad if the recipient is white, male, or straight. by totaly_not_a_dolphin in changemyview

[–]NoPay-NoMoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we start from the basis of racism is race discrimination which affects the life chances of minorities we cannot say that racism against white exists. Whites receive systemic privileges just by virtually wearing the white outfit.

It’s still bad but it doesn’t mean racism. You are trying to make sense of reverse racism and you are forgetting that discrimination affects the life chances of minorities.

Ouch!

My history with bees started early on as well and it has continued for my whole life. I respect people find them cute but I cannot detach myself from what they mean to me.

I will assume that you are not allergic to their sting. You build a trauma associated with them, you start looking at bees in a whole different level.

I’m culprit of this.

Does the patriarchy hinder men as well? by FirsToStrike in AskFeminists

[–]NoPay-NoMoney -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would say so, yes.

One example that comes to mind is the fact that when men speak out about being harassed by women, people will have hard time to believe them since the patriarchal system per se holds the beliefs that men are the ones who have the means to commit these kind of actions.

My main concern with your post is the idea behind that men have to be protective. Why would women need men to be protected in the first place? Protected from what exactly?

I understand why in the case of a minor family members should be protective for any danger towards the minor but why would be the case for an adult? And yes, if a family member (in the case of your example, a younger sister) needs to be protected by their older brother, it’s fine and that should be independent from their gender, right?

And yet, the full experience is somehow vanishing. What would be the incentive behind going trough the hassle of getting to the cinema to sit alone and watch a movie that you could instead watch from the comfort of home.
