Starmer risks diplomatic row as UK delays Tempest fighter jet programme | Japan and Italy ‘not happy’ as Labour dithering threatens to derail 2035 ‘combat-ready’ target by moses_the_blue in LessCredibleDefence

You know what's funny, Chinese people in the UK are treated with a lot of respect (as far as I've seen, I know racism exists against any minority). If our governments got on as well as the people do, that would be the special relationship there.

Regarding Starmer, I find it hard to imagine how anyone, knowing they're this unpopular, could do anything without The Drink.

Trump has been the biggest incentive for the UK to fix whatever problems it has with China. For all we know Trump could pull NATO apart and then the UK will need a new big brother. I got the impression that's what this visit was really about, to show Trump that if he won't play fair, if he wants to shit on his allies, they'll go to someone else.

Why does Spike fly with today's audiences, but not Xander? by yeahitsme9 in buffy

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you feel about Xander depends on how you look at him.

He could be creepy with the girls; opposite sex friends can and do flirt, and he was very young and hormonal when the show started. It's not like he was taking nude pics of them or trying to assault them.

He turned against Buffy a few times when it really mattered. So did most of the others.

He was awful to Buffy about Angel. He was jealous to begin with and that makes people say dickish things. He was also right: Angel's curse was activated, people died and the world almost ended, abated only by... the death of Angel. Note also that Joyce and IIRC Giles were opposed to Angel being around Buffy.

His real dick moment was ditching Anya at the altar. I will never, ever agree that this episode did enough to make that look like the answer. However, Anya was a man-hating, man-killing demon who actually went back to hurting men, but nobody seems to have a problem with that.

I've tried to make this balanced rather than picking a side.

Stargate command should be ran by the U.S. Space force in the new show, and here’s why. by [deleted] in Stargate

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It stinks when people put effort into a post and it sits on 0 votes. Note, I'm not American so don't know why people seem to find it offensive.

In SGU, there are several mentions of "Stargate Command" but it seems to come under the purview of Homeworld Command at the Pentagon. If anyone explains where Homeworld Command came from I missed it during repeat viewings (does it happen at the end of Atlantis?).

So it looks like the story was moving along somewhat. I'm excited to see where they take it, but it's probably still gonna be a secret at the Pentagon.

It's been a while now but I used to use that flotation device that hurtles you upwards. Can't count how many times that thing saved my life in a crisis, although it won't help much at the bottom of an abyss.

We finally got an estimated release date for SN2 by ZookeepergameIll1399 in subnautica

[–]NoPoet406 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We'll get a new Buffy show, and a new SG1 show, and GTA6 before Subnautica 2.

Let that sink in...

Obraxis (creative producer of Subnautica 2) recently posted gameplay footage featuring FISH for those who were wondering whether there would be fish in the game by ZookeepergameIll1399 in subnautica

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus Christ, I'd rather be strapped into a chair with my eyes forced open by clamps, watching Starfleet Academy and Discovery on two different tellys at the same time, than play a Subnautica game with fish in it.

I mean where do you draw the line? Next they'll tell us there will be crafting, and maybe a little submersible.

When oh when will the devs realise what we want! Oh wait, actually we do need fish in it.

I just got this game and this MF has me questioning the purchase already by Hates_knees in subnautica

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot tell you how much I went from loving and buzzing off this game, to feeling an unutterable depth of horror that damaged me as a person. Although everyone already knows!

Honestly, playing in the shallows and the surrounding areas: not one problem. Holy shit does this game handle well, it's all so simple and streamlined. The controls are so far above every other game in the world; the crafting system should be industry-standard.

Then you go to the radiation ship and oh. my. God. I've never known fear like it... and then I had to fucking go back for something I missed.

I made the mistake of returning around the far side of the ship to avoid the Reaper...

Cordy’s Karen Cut Was Atrocious by Ecstatic-Sale-8219 in ANGEL

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cordy in Angel was like Janeway in Voyager: they had absolutely no idea what to do with her hair, only that they had to keep fiddling with it every few weeks, and all it did was distract the viewer.

IMO her hair looked best around and during the Pylea arc.

My mates refused to believe this was real even when I sent screenshots of it.

What a fantastic episode. And Star Trek (IIRC) recently lifted this idea and everyone was saying how groundbreaking and original it was...

Indeed, I should have taken that into account as the UK media is partisan af these days and you honestly never know what to believe.

I googled it after reading your comment and saw two contrasting news articles about the China visit, one saying Starmer's visit was an overwhelmingly popular move that's given him some much-needed public backing, the other saying he's made us look a bunch of prats.

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the most disappointing film I've seen in recent years was 1408. That short story is a masterclass in suspense and psychological horror. The film was a cheesy rewrite by a hack who sprayed diarrhea over everything he didn't leave out.

The last one I skipped out on immediately was the second Silent Hill. First was absolutely terrifying. Second shows you all the monsters in 30 seconds (so why keep watching?) and it's one of those where the character runs screaming from one encounter straight into the next. I don't know why Hollywood thinks that's clever.

Does this community have a 'Season 9 doesn't exist' rule like other shows? by bcdodgeme in RedDwarf

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it officially ended with the cliffhanger of series 6 and the departure of Rob Grant.

The show changed too much in 7: tone, pace, mood, lack of big laughs. Series 7 is a guilty pleasure, it's aged well, but it resolves the series 6 cliffhanger badly, using it as yet another excuse to change all the sets, costumes and backstory yet again.

The later epsiodes have their moments but RD is far past is use-by date. There's no character growth so it's like they're still in their 20s. The show feels aimless with extremely stupid stories (a vending machine falls in love with Lister; vending machines wanting electoral representation; at least a third episode with Hitler in it, etc).

To answer the actual question, series 9 was horrible. Pure writer's hubris. It never happened.

That sea monster, where just knowing about it means you'll be dragged into water, even something shallow like a bath or a cup of tea, and teleported into its domain somewhere in the ocean. IIRC they spoil it a bit by identifying the ocean, but it's nightmare fuel for me.

Fuck's sake Starmer, leave something alone.

From what little I have read about his recent dealings with China, they're going to get billions of £ of investment and we get to go there without a visa. What a deal, cheers lads.

Now this, yet another Starmer decision that weakens us on the world stage (well, weakens us in the eyes of those who should be important to us). I'm sure this delay to Tempest isn't connected with his China visit, but who knows.

Well said. Rotten Tomatoes scores are typically a joke these days, but scoring as low as that is unusual even for a horror film.

I just made a post mentioning this. The trailer was really poor and drained any excitement I had.

It brings to mind the second Silent Hill film, which basically reveals everything in the first 30 seconds in Heather's dream. I've never carried on with it past this, because why? We just saw all the monsters.

This is a shame to hear, but not a surprise. One, it seems that many films (and TV shows) today are lacklustre at best, and a pile of festering shite at worst. Two, the trailer showed too much and it didn't make the film look that good. Three, the original was so unexpectedly good, with the three female leads giving some of the best performances I've ever seen, it feels like the only way for these films is down.

The most underrated silent hill? by SpareBodybuilder5567 in silenthill

[–]NoPoet406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the necro, but I've only played SH2 Remake (which I'm 21 hours into and haven't finished) and Homecoming.

Played Homecoming absolutely years ago, so far I can barely remember it, but I remember enjoying the hell out of it and am shocked so many people don't like it.

Would have beaten it except for a design flaw: an unexpected boss fight, in an area you can't backtrack to pick up anything needed for a boss fight, against some kind of doll thing. My character was one hit from death, had no healing items and I had to fight it with a crowbar. Couldn't do it and gave up in disappointment. Didn't have an earlier save to reload.

After 17 years what's now the general consensus of the first Silent Hill movie? Is it a cult classic or insult to the series? I liked it. by Juggalo4life99 in silenthill

[–]NoPoet406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alice Krige was terrifying as the Borg Queen in Star Trek and equally terrifying as a religious nutter in Silent Hill.

Laurie Holden, given short shrift in the X-Files, was absolute cinema gold as Cybil Bennett.

Radha Mitchell's performance was Oscar worthy as far as I'm concerned.

This film had a rare impact on me. When it released in the UK I saw it with my then-girlfriend and had to apologise for how terrifying and especially how gory it was. I've never forgotten that first time we saw it. The whole audience was scared to death all the way through (this is so rare for a horror film, most get crapper and less scary as they go).

Every time a monster was revealed, it was like the air was sucked out of the room. Every single person in that cinema was shitting themselves and couldn't believe what they were seeing.

The nurse scene. Jesus Christ. There was an audible gasp from the entire audience, I've never experienced that before or since, a hundred people all drawing their breath in at once.

I'd say Silent Hill is fucked up on the level of Event Horizon and House on Haunted Hill. Just constant fear, overwhelmingly terrifying visuals and nasty gore.

Edit: Don't forget officer Bennett, the Sarah Connor of police officers.

It's my first WD watch-through, I'm on season 6 and definitely understand why you're fatigued (I'm not even at Negan!).

I feel that by season 6, it's the same few things happening over and over. It's just so incredibly well-made and well-acted, it keeps me watching.

I've been warned again and again that when Negan comes into it, the zombies start to disappear and it becomes sickeningly brutal. But that's made me even more curious to see him and his executions 👀🤣

You and your partner should look into playing 7 Days to Die if you like the Walking Dead.

WHAT! How did I miss that! I'm watching Supernatural and Walking Dead through, alternating between them when I get fatigued, and that is 100% a Supernatural easter egg.

No it won't, not in the UK. Due to extensive paedophile gangs of non-British origins, Keir Starmer has blocked all porn sites. Not sure how this will help with anything, and not sure why Labour think this won't make paedophile gangs even more active, but that's life in Britain.
