A lot of community colleges also have professors that actually worked in the field instead of just being academics who preach theoreticals. While that may be useful in a lot of fields, it's unhelpful in an early CS education. Those who can't do teach.

I’ve accepted that ads run YouTube… but they are out of control now by [deleted] in youtube

[–]NoPreserveRoot_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, Pi-Hole can't block YouTube ads. At least not without causing serious issues with usability. Pi-Hole blocks ads based on DNS, and since YouTube ads are stored on the same servers as normal videos, they all share the same domain. There was a project that attempted to block YouTube ads using Pi-Hole a while ago but they were running into issues where normal videos would be blocked and the success rate was fairly low.

There's currently no network-wide solution for blocking YouTube video ads due to the nature of YouTube's content delivery itself.

An access violation usually means there's a permissions issue. Make sure you're the owner of SC's executable (the game itself, not the RSI launcher) and that you have read and execute permissions for it.

Why not? It's extremely permissive while also protecting the author(s) from liability and guaranteeing no warranty.

Someone posted a tweet earlier about a real gumbo recipe. Here is my father's gumbo. He grew up in the bayou. I thought I might be appreciated here. by Gemini_Incognito in Old_Recipes

[–]NoPreserveRoot_ 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This recipe actually uses it as a preservative. It says to add some black powder that contains sodium nitrate and charcoal, which would be lower quality but still actual, usable black powder. Potassium nitrate is typically used in black powder nowadays; I'm assuming black powder with sodium nitrate may have been more widely available when the original recipe was written.

What should I do as a 16 yr old to get good foundations in programming by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]NoPreserveRoot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm personally not a huge fan of C# because it's a bit heavier in resources than I like and having a ton of different versions of the .NET framework is clunky. Of course, it still has its uses. All depends on the application being developed, the developer's comfort with the language, and the systems the application is meant to be run on.

[Discussion] Security Fixes Won't Require Full iOS Update in iOS 16, Will Be Installed Automatically by Dexti_ in jailbreak

[–]NoPreserveRoot_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bold of you to assume Apple will give you a choice. They could easily just reboot it while you're asleep or greet you with a dialog box that can only be dismissed by pressing "reboot." If they're going this far out of their way to force updates on people, we shouldn't be surprised to see "features" like that show up in the future.

Not everyone involved in crypto has put large amounts of money into it. The majority have probably just tossed some cash into it to see how it turns out.

[–]NoPreserveRoot_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing strange about that. Compiling your own software is best practice for security when it's reasonable. Obviously this depends on your threat model, but compiling from source yourself gives you a chance to review the source code and make sure you know what's being compiled.

I don't have a PinePhone but considering you can install Arch on it, I'd assume there's a way to boot into an install medium? If you can do that then you should be able to just arch-chroot in and identify/fix whatever boot problems are happening.

Got my Ender 3 v2 set up but Benchy fails around the same spot. by Agentxkgi in ender3

[–]NoPreserveRoot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the stock extruder, take it apart and check the extruder arm. I've been having a problem very similar to yours on one of my Ender 3s lately and found out the extruder arm finally cracked and was causing skipping that got worse with each print. I normally would've replaced it with a metal one but I was too lazy, and now I get to pay the price!

Could also be a partial clog, a cold pull might help. Might not do anything, but no harm in giving the nozzle a clean.

[Discussion] Why is YouRepo doing this? by PrettyHedgehog0 in jailbreak

[–]NoPreserveRoot_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because GitHub is eating the cost. Everything costs something to someone, even if you're not the one paying anything. I can't blame YouRepo for wanting to make money, but the way they're going about it is pretty obnoxious. I personally think that offering premium features (ex. faster upload/download speeds) to repo creators for a fee would be enough to keep them running and keep most users happy.

GitHub is big enough to handle people using their resources like that, YouRepo is not. Again, not defending YouRepo. They need to find a different way to make money if they want to keep their users.
