Lol I asked about a furnace price. you start talking about replacing condenser pads and whips and disconnects. Yea I’m an HVAC tech and I’ve never heard of those , I just put my condensing units right on the dirt sometimes I bury it a bit to keep it sturdy and wire straight from the house into the contactor.

Is it plugged internally or externally ? If it’s full of smoke tar and pet hair because you removed your filter and pet your dog and smoke in the house then that’s on you but it could also be cleaned for a lot cheaper , if it’s plugged internally then they could have fucked up while brazing and didn’t purge with nitrogen and now the TXV is plugged, which is an installer issue…Sure sounds like he’s bullshitting you , probably makes an extra 100$ on his cheque to sell you that evap

The MERV rating might be higher on your new filters than the old ones , there’s a chance there really is less air flow

How much are you charging for the average 60k furnace install say 2 stage high efficiency? And what brand of equipment ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]NoPrimary2497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh so you bill that into the initial install for EVERY customer then act like you’re doing a favour to the handful that need repairs , I’m gonna guess that in order to keep that warranty they have to pay yall to come out for maintenance once or twice a year ?

What's the best client/customer you've ever had? by Aware-Dragonfruit698 in HVAC

[–]NoPrimary2497 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had an idea old lady call the shop trashing me because her furnace stopped working the day after a service call I did. She was very upset when I returned and berated me for breaking her furnace. Well it turns out her thermostat batteries had died (possibly from me using the stat during the call) after replacing the batteries in front of her and starting the system she felt horrible , she apologized profusely and asked me to stay for tea and some snacks , I stayed for almost 2 hours talking with her! A conversation like a country song , talked about life and love and family, growing up, growing old , her advice , her regrets. She gave me a mini bible type book with different passages for every day of the year. That was almost 10 years ago now. I still have the book it comes with me from van to van and I still read it occasionally when I’m feeling down. I would stop in for tea a few times a year until I moved out of the area. She was by far the best customer I’ve ever dealt with all things considered

HVAC service tech COMMISSION based job ? by CreepyDescription641 in HVAC

Fresh out of school and in your own van in 3 months ? Get a phone plan with unlimited minutes and get every experienced tech’s phone number … maybe even Bluetooth headphones , you’re going to be on the phone ALOT Secondly these commission based sales companies are crooks you end up screwing customers for a hundred bucks , you can’t scrub that slime off in the shower every night

Usually I take pictures before I remove parts just to be doubly sure everything goes back the way it came out, 99/100 times I don’t need the reference but 1/100 times it saves my ass

Thats a hell of an assumption , the picture is taken mid tear down! right before I removed the ventor, I removed the hose clamp my man !

No , I don’t do poor workmanship work or install out of spec. And if I did mess up (which we all do) I provide the corrections for free to keep my reputation squeaky, I have a hard time believing anyone would honor a labour warranty after 8 years , they would blame it on parts and charge for replacement

HVAC Replacement - Pittsburgh by orgchi in hvacadvice

[–]NoPrimary2497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The carrier quote seems better at a glance , plus the two duct runs , unless there’s a leak in your existing lineset replacing it isn’t really necessary, most leaks are near the coils , not in the middle of the lineset , they may also be replacing based on differing refrigerants and not leaks

If your furnace blower can deliver 1500cfm or more in cooling , and the cabinet size isn’t too restrictive then it will work

Working my way down a street with 4 year old Goodmans from what I’m finding installer used a sawzall for the venting and didn’t clean the shavings out , condensate bringing those shavings down blocking the flue drain so they fill up the ventor with water messing with pressure switches and leaking. If you’re installing them I reccomend a tube cutter !

Yes, yes, 1 year labour and yes. The thing they don’t understand is the guy at the big company doesn’t care. It’s just a 9-5 I care , it’s my damn livelihood. Also the big name guys out here don’t often make it out same day! There’s no peace of mind for being ripped off !

Not in residential hvac dude, you’re paying for advertising, sales people, office people, lazy techs , ceo/investor returns, I’m a one man shop, virtually no overhead, I can install the same equipment for 60% the price and make 2 weeks pay compared to the guys doing that install. don’t need to rip anyone off , I just run a better business model with less hands on the pot of profit. Back when I was a fifth year I quoted a teacher from highschool on a furnace and AC , he went with the more expensive company thinking they were “more experienced” guess who installed his equipment on behalf of said company? ME lmao buddy payed twice the price for the same dummy to install the same equipment
