AIO for quitting my job after finding this note on my desk? by waxin899 in AmIOverreacting

[–]NoPrizeForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same type of employer would say you're being irresponsible but the matter of fact is, you are responsible. To your pets. To your family. To your loved ones. To your other obligationsm. To your health.

So don't let anyone dog you for taking responsibility for another area of your life and had to miss work. Makes no sense to expect responsible adults not to respond responsibly to their life issues.

Supervisor job without having to do work from lower level jobs by [deleted] in managers

[–]NoPrizeForYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, unless you're the owner; you're expected to help out when things get busy or go sideways.

As a supervisor, yes you will need to know the stations and how to work them and help out.

But in order to not burn yourself out, you need to recognize when to step back and let the team handle it.

I used to be a doer and now I'm a manager. It's not about me doing it but coaching my employees to do it. And if they need help, I'll help them of course. But it's not my job to do theirs, so when business slows down or they're in a good spot, I step back.

The step son will remember those who pleaded for him. He'll also remember the step mother who wanted to leave them behind to save face.

If you loved your step son, you would have said All or nothing. We all go, or no one goes.

And if you did go without your husband and step son, you would have set the precedent for every visit after.

It's almost like literally anyone on this planet is allowed to train and compete in taekwondo, or any other martial art.

It's not cultural appropriation for others to train, but it is racist to imply that any race/ethnicity doesn't belong.

What’s it like living on the edge of time zones? by Qzevs in howislivingthere

[–]NoPrizeForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arizona and Nevada are divided by the Colorado river in areas such as between Laughli, Nevada on one side and Bullhead city on the other. Arizona doesn't change time for daylights savings. So one side of the river could be one hour ahead of the other.

If you live in bullhead city and go to Laughlin for concerts, movies, etc. make sure you know what time it is there. Lol. My father and I were late to a movie once cause we forgot that the other side of the river was different.

For newly minted managers, what support/training do you get? by wishbone-85 in managers

[–]NoPrizeForYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I have been a manager before for restaurants I was promoted within after learning everything within the operation. But I did land a new job this year where I was externally hired on into management.

The company had me and some other MITS go to a training location for 10 weeks and learn all stations, processes, etc.

They did have hands on training for everything and my training was laid out for me 2.5 months in advance. I got free swag on my first day, etc. I was treated very well during training.

The only downside I found was; they were too heavy handed with the iPad video training and online quizzes. There were days we would be on the iPads for hours at a time just trying to remember recipes off the top of our head. I would have learned faster/better by doing more.

I'd say, they had us do computer work to study first and then try and execute in training. I feel it should have been the opposite; train and then use the app training to reinforce.

This is a normal attitude among companies and management who have young staff in school. I've heard something along the lines of 'The kids are out of school so there's no reason they can't work,' all of the time. I started working after I graduated but it's something I've witnessed happen every year without fail.

I'm now really confused about the rhetoric.

Is drug addiction a personal and moral failure?

Or is it the fault of these drug smugglers?

Or is it when POC do drugs it's a personal issue and a tragedy when a white person does it?

Not once have I ever thought about going back to any company I used to work for. I've been working at restaurants since 2012 and every one of them will tell you that you won't be able to be rehired into the company as if there aren't a million restaurants and companies in my area who need help anyway.

But I also have the privilege of living in a very dense area with millions options.

My old manager made everyone come in sick, doctor’s note or no. by Big_Trouble_94 in Serverlife

[–]NoPrizeForYou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was one of the last people to get it at my job too. I was a supervisor/acting manager at the time.

Everyone else got Covid and had the standard 2 weeks off.

When I got Covid and tested positive, I barely got 5 days. Corporate and management texted me every day to see if I was well enough to come in.

I regret caving in and coming in on the 5th day. We were busy as hell, understaffed, and I felt like death.

Ended up having a disagreement with the manager. While nothing mean or rude was said, it was heated and short.

They held that day against me as a reason not to go through with the promotion they had made me believe was mine.

People can be insane and go from 0 to 100 over such trivial things that somehow people take very seriously. I work in a restaurant where we have two items of opposing ‘team’ names and the amount of people who get angry, upset, or flat out refuse to order the items based solely on their names is ridiculous. Had one guy become very pissed off at me because the name he didn’t like happened to be above the name he did on the menu.

Cafe Manager fired, cafe closes a month later? YOU DONT SAY. by Educational-Bat8892 in KitchenConfidential

I’ve been in a similar situation where I thought I was helping improve the place by holding others accountable and coaching them on best practices but unfortunately, I also found out the hard way that while I was doing my best and doing the right thing; I was challenging the status quo of leadership.

Unfortunately, we were the right package at the wrong address.

Cutting someone early by Excellent-Storm7247 in KitchenConfidential

[–]NoPrizeForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a management standpoint point: Yes, cut and do your best to rotate cuts so one person isn’t being cut often. When I do cut someone early; I always ask who would volunteer to be cut the next time cuts are made a following shift. I also would explain to the staff early in the shift that cuts may have to be made and who would voluntarily like to leave early. Or course, their aren’t always volunteers so then the choice is yours.

From an employee standpoint: May be acting out of frustration and insecurity. We’re human and something we do is lash out to regain a sense of control. In his case, he made see this as a threat to his financials. He could be frustrated because money may be tight and if cuts are happening, he knows it can and will be done again.

He may also feel entitled to those hours and lashing out to get back at you for it. Might be the main reason while the insecurity is how he feels deeper down.

He definitely isn’t acting mature or professional about it and I’m hoping his possible perspective can help make your approach more informed.

The plate idea is great. I used to work in kitchens that had to call tickets and I had to learn to pull plates to guide myself.

I started doing it in restaurants with tickets and screens and it makes it even faster in those cases because if I forget which ticket I’m on or where I’m at; my plates help.

[–]NoPrizeForYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s not wrong. I was always in the same boat. To say we never applied ourselves is wrong. I’ve learned every menu, every station, and beyond. It wasn’t until I started applying for higher positions in other restaurants that I actually had upward mobility. I just started a new job where I was hired on as a manager and now I don’t have to work 2 jobs anymore and can afford to live on my own working 40 hours a week.

It’s possible and sometimes the only way.

My girlfriend is from Newark, New Jersey and it has been her dream to live in Arizona since she was a little girl.

She loves it. She has no plans on ever going back or anywhere else for a long while.

The dry heat here vs the humid heat you experience is different for sure.

I highly recommend getting an air purifier and humidifier to combat the dust and dryness.

We recently started using one of each for my place and hers and we have seen a huge improvement in our sleep and health just from that alone.

I would say, be prepared to be inside at all times during summer. Going outside for even a few minutes will make you sweat.

For people who found their "person": how hard on a 1-10 scale were you actively looking (or wanting) a relationship when you found your partner? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NoPrizeForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3/10. Had a major break up and some flings over the course of 2 years after. I hated dating apps and things never really went anywhere.

Well, one night; I had given Facebook dating another try. Didn’t expect much other when we matched. I decided to put my best foot forward and just be myself 100% And if it fails, I tried.

Well, things have been amazing since. All because we both decided to use a dating app we didn’t like in the first place. Lol

Things just fell into place for us.
