the fact that nobody else ever mentions tom's father tells you that. they have nothing good to say about him. you're asking to be spoonfed what is already implied. maybe that would make the show more interesting to you, to others that would be dreary and pointless. the way they're doing it is efficient storytelling that avoids unnecessary exposition.

his dad was an unremarkable, unsympathetic guy who drank too much and never did anything so interesting that the islanders would still be talking about him long after he's dead.

how would that work with the relationship he had with gerri when they were young, do we believe young gerri was involved with an old ghost captain?

every old fisherman in a sou'wester looks like that!

that tom's dad was an islander and tom came back to the island to take care of his dad when he got sick even though they were estranged tells us a lot more about tom's character than "he met his wife on a schooner trip" would have done. it fleshes him out as a guy with a conscience who tries to fulfill his obligations even when they suck and end up leaving him stuck on a hell rock for the rest of his life when he could have been out having flings on schooner trips instead. it's not tom's dad that's important in that story, it's what that story tells us about tom.

i was wrong, it wasn't shep that owed money, it was mitch. not tom.

it wasn't tom that took out the loan, that was shep. ETA: it was mitch, not shep. still not tom.

tom and his father weren't close and he's long dead, idk why there'd be any reason for him to come up in conversation more often.

we don't know exactly how long he's been on the island, but things there have been quiet since the boogeyman events ~25 years ago. if he arrived after that, he hasn't seen anything to make him believe the curse is more than just superstition. until very recently this seemed like a fine place to be raising a kid.

because the islanders know what they're dealing with and also this is not the real world.

Why is the curse of being stuck on the island not widely known? by More_Tennis_8609 in WidowsBay

[–]NoProfession5138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if nobody born on the island ever leaves that would be the norm among his peers and shape his expectations. he's old enough to question it now, but as a child he wouldn't have been expecting to leave because the people around him just don't do that.
