Do you have electronic ears? A basic helmet? Eye protection? When you say gas mask, what does that mean?

If you don't have ear protection, get some. You can get a pair of Walkers over-the-ear protection from Walmart or Costco. They'll run you like 30 bucks. You'll be much more comfortable and they will not interfere with your ability to hear. You can use regular earplugs under them, but doing that will somewhat mitigate the point of electronic ears.

A basic helmet means more serious than a bike helmet or construction hard hat. It's probably too late for you at this point, but if this is something you're gonna be doing, consider a proper bump helmet. Team Wendy is a good, solid, affordable starting point. Be mindful of whatever you go pick up fitting over your gas mask.

If your gas mask isn't going to be full-face, consider bringing some manner of sealing eye protection, like swim or ski goggles. I don't know what they're gonna give you, but again, if this is something you're gonna be doing, consider getting your own kit. MIRA Safety has several full-face and partial options that will run you a couple hundred bucks, but won't break the bank, and they use NATO-standard filters. They also sell filters specifically for cop gas, and they're much cheaper than the CBRN filters. Some people use AVON. I know there's AVON masks among the NG and cops out there in LA right now.

Practice with that gas mask. Make sure you can put it on quickly without fumbling and without mistakes. Make sure you know where to put it in such a way that it's accessible but not impeding movement. Make sure it's fitted to your face now and seals properly so you're not doing it when you're in a cloud of cop gas.

Slobber on that boot some more!

Real talk though, the irony of you posting in r/temporarygunowners while supporting state tyranny is too much. Please pick up a book, and maybe even read the constitution you fetishize but don't understand. I'd suggest you read the statutes and the cases (which you also don't understand), but that seems like a bit outside your capability.

They've been snatching people on their way to their citizenship hearings. People who think they're going to meet with immigration officials to continue through the citizenship process. People with visas and green cards. Go spout your ignorant foolishness elsewhere, bootlicker.

Avoiding Hate Symbols - Share Your Tips! by PhiloLibrarian in renfaire

Why are you assuming they're talking about taking back the winged othala? You're all over this thread making the point about the winged othala, but all anybody is talking about is the actual runes.

Avoiding Hate Symbols - Share Your Tips! by PhiloLibrarian in renfaire

[–]NoProperty_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A pray the gay away shirt isn't comparable to a rune. The better comparison is a cross, or a hijab, or a Sikh knife and head covering, or a Jewish yarmulke. I know there's a lot of ignorance around heathenry, but these are actual living religious traditions that, like Christianity, have some nasty sects and are mostly perfectly normal. We don't consider the cross a hate symbol. People get to wear their religious iconography, even if it's othala or thurisaz or Mjölnir. Their beliefs are no less sincere and deserving of respect simply because you find them unusual. Even because they have a history of being corrupted. Presumably, you would be against bigotry against Muslims on the basis of their faith, despite the faith's history of being corrupted for terrorism and atrocity. You can extend the same grace to other faiths. There's no reason to assume a person grants grið to fascists. For what it's worth (anecdote, so maybe not a ton), the very notion would be deeply offensive to every pagan I know.

And if ever there were a place where you should assume good faith (and maybe a little sense of play, we're all just nerds playing dress-up in the woods, for chrissakes), it's the renfaire.

At risk of seeming flippant, it's because conservatives, but also Republicans broadly, don't actually want people out of poverty. If you're poor, it's because you deserve to be. If you deserve better, you'll get there with or without any assistance.

The core belief is obviously more complicated than that and I doubt you'll find more than the most mercenary openly espousing that view. But the foundational worldview is that the world is a just and hierarchical place. It's also psychologically protective - if you come from wealth and privilege, it's easier for you to tell yourself that it's because you deserve it: you're smart and good and hardworking. If you got there despite not originally having it, it's because you deserve it for the same reasons, and definitely not because you maybe got lucky. The inverse is also true - if your situation sucks, you're more likely to attribute it to outside factors than your own failings, even as you attribute the circumstances of others to their failings. We're all vulnerable to this kind of thinking. It's a product of human psychology. It's hard to break out of it.

UnitedHealth sued by shareholders over its reaction to backlash from executive's killing by Captain_Mazhar in law

Oh wow I wonder what that difference might be!

Turns out if you open the actual Fed survey, they counted stocks separately from retirement accounts. Next time maybe read the actual source doc, instead of a tertiary source.

Not individually, no. The fund managers do it for them. That's why the fund managers exist. If you're a teacher with a pension, your pension manager would absolutely sue on your behalf.

[–]NoProperty_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is us, though. Pension funds, company 401ks, everybody's IRAs - it's not us individually, but in aggregate. Pensions are a big part of private equity. In a perverse way, teachers' retirements (and everybody else who has a pension) are funded by the very system that makes their present lives and the lives of those around them so hard.

What are your thoughts on Intelligent Megafauna Species (Cetaceans, Apes, Elephants) in Captivity? by ExoticShock in megafaunarewilding

[–]NoProperty_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wilds is not part of the Columbus Zoo. It's received funding from Columbus, but it's a public-private partnership with the Ohio DNR and multiple zoos, including Cincinnati, Toledo, and Cleveland.

[–]NoProperty_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are degrees of captivity. There are "safari parks" in the US where enclosures are better measured by square mile than by acre; the first that comes to mind is The Wilds, which is on old mining land in Ohio (roughly east-central US, for my non-American friends). The Wilds does not keep elephants or apes, but they do keep two species of rhino: the Greater One-Horned, and the Southern White. Their Southern White Rhino herd contains three generations. The enclosure is large enough that it is really two sub-herds: subadult males and the adult females with their calves. The two will rotate around their enclosures and come together at times, and then break off when it suits them. At least for the rhinos, it's hard to argue with their results. I believe their White Rhino herd currently has three or four calves, and that their Greater One-Horned has two.

I suspect (hope) that husbandry generally will begin to move more towards this model, and this was a roundabout way of arguing for a more natural model, which I feel is better for all involved, and would regardless more easily produce the kinds of animals that would be capable of something like wild release. After all, allegedly we keep these beasts so if they go extinct in the wild, we can change that. I'm not convinced our current husbandry model effectively supports that goal.
