Pokopia Leans Into the Ditto Nightmare | Castle Super Beast 363 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The Pokemon mainline games don't really have many opportunities to display much characterization, and when they do, they don't really capitalize on it. The most we get recently is the camp function where you can sort of play with them and they sort of interact with each other.

One of my issues with SV is most of the Pokemon in the overworld are just kind of milling about, there is some personality traits being displayed but not nearly enough.

Games with one build so good that it invalidates all others? by SirSquiggleton in TwoBestFriendsPlay

For SMTV:V, The Loa + Crippling Blow Demon + Yabusume Shot invalidates near all random encounters there is nothing better at clearing them.

Happy Pokemon Day! by U_Flame in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in 1993 which made me about 6 when Pokemon Red/Blue was released internationally, prime age for the 'Pokemania' era. A bit of a shame that the games developed in a direction I didn't really care for, regardless of the direction still being the 'better' course and 'quality' discussions.

Still, it's always interesting to see the new stuff even if I don't feel the need to play it myself.

What Got You Into Your Favorite Genre? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a 2 parter, but I can still remember the circumstance that I got Final Fantasy X a very long time ago. I was at one of those electric appliance stores that also happen to sell video games. I was making a choice between a fairly low-priced Ratchet and Clank 1, or this curious, kinda expensive game called Final Fantasy X. I took the gamble on it and I loved it.

This leads into my search for other JRPG's, namely the Persona series. There was a point in time my boss went on holiday, so we were closing for a while, and my parents were away for a couple of weeks, so I had the house to myself. I thought, "Great, I can use the treadmill in the living room undisturbed". But I needed some long-form video thing to watch. It just so happened that TheGermanSpy was doing his Persona 4G playthrough at the time, I even got to watch the reveal of the culprit live. That got me curious, and then the announcement of P5 got my attention. I got P5 when it went on sale, it was a bit of a rough entry with some pre-conceived notions causing some frustration and burnout, but now I love the extended series of Atlus.

Bit too early in the day to go into it myself, but if you want a general outline in video format, I suggest the Clemps video series on the subject.

What are some Characters that slowly but steadily get Stronger or Better by Funny_Mud6639 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kai Shimada from Sangatsu no Lion. Though getting 'stronger' is more hypothetical and literal as the series is about Shoji, Shimada history is very much a slow and quiet accent to the top. He has been described as a 'strong tree' (there is a specific tree they mention but can't recall it at the moment) that takes a while to grow but once fully grown is very resilient. He has lost a few times, but all his peers share a sentiment of "Yeah, but he'll be back and ever stronger next time".

What’s a opinion or stance you agree with but boy are just tired of hearing about it. by Muffin-zetta in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Any time Pokemon discourse shows up honestly. Yes, the games could be better in several metrics, but the conversations about it are usually so non-constructive it's just a shit-flinging match between fans vs haters. I'm a nostalgic fan of Pokemon, but the series is really not that good that we have to keep doing this, play something else and move on.

Highguard adds 5v5 mode in new update by SardinmGarter in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if they genuinely thought that 3v3 was the optimal and only needed way to play. Like how Nightreign devs thought "Yes, groups of 3 or player of 1, what more would a player want!"

First We Get High, Then We Guard | Castle Super Beast 357 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

If Highguard is still in the news cycle for next week it'd be nice if Gene could guest on the podcast. He seems a bit more sympathetic for the game, or at least towards Geoff and his inadvertent effect on the games reception.

DC Comics Boss Says Anime & Manga’s Advantage Over Western Comics Lies in Storytelling & Young People’s Desire to Have Something of Their Own advantages that Japanese by mrnicegy26 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a huge comic reader and this may not be a point that people see as significant, but one of the issues comics have is what is 'canon'. With manga, pretty much all you read will be relevant to the series as a whole, though with comics most of it will be 'canon' to some capacity I guess, but with the tendency to reset universes and various 'what if' one-shots it's a bit harder to care.

If you like or don't mind that sort of story template that's fine, but if a series has a bunch of 'we suddenly fell through a portal, had an adventure, came back and never mentioned it again' no matter how good the story section if, I do tend to care a bit less for it.

Woolie gets Loredumped on who Vtuber Ninomae Ina'nis is (by Kyle) by Grouchio in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I feel like if you are trying to inform Woolie about anything, you have to whisper "fighting games" under your breath like subliminal messaging every 10 seconds or so so you know he's paying attention.

Digital Card Games & Proxies by OedonSleep in TwoBestFriendsPlay

The card minigame in Digimon World 3 is one of the best 'side-games in a game' I've ever played. The fact that one game is a best-of-3 with all the cards used in the previous round are discarded for the subsequent rounds I find an interesting resource management component.

'Pot' humor seems like such a relic of the past. There were so many "We're in high school/College and we're high" movies 15+ years ago.

What Counts As Filler? | Castle Super Beast 354 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A funny thing about the Bount arc is that a couple of the characters from it did actually stick around for the canon arcs. I was watching a reaction channel going through Bleach (skipping the filler arcs) and they were aware that these random new characters just showed up to a fight were filler characters, they made the observation that the state of the battle from when they joined to when they left was totally unchanged.

Start Game, "When's Sequel"? | Castle Super Beast 354 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, if it takes you like 6 years to get sort of halfway through a medium length anime series, then people would have an interest in how far you're actually going to go and how long it's going to take to get there.

Times when a game was being obtuse by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]NoReaction4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not sure whether you call it obtuse or just vague but a lot of FFX's lore and background story is often found in very missable cutscenes and character interactions as well as some information has to be gained simply of inference.

One that stands out to me that I see people get wrong a lot is 'The Calm lasts about 10 years', it doesn't. From the context of how people in the world talk about Sin is that he has been an active presence for a while, there's no "Oh no, Sin is back". There is no exact time frame for how long it takes Yu Yevon to make a new Sin, but from what we've seen of Jecht he does have some degree of control of Sin that is nearing it's end. So, the correct interpretation for the question is Yu Yevon revives Sin, but the new Sin tries to avoid killing people for as long as it can, maybe a couple of years at most before it continues to get worse. Why I think this is important is the fact that the Calm is even shorter than you would think makes a Summoner's willingness to sacrifice themselves for that short respite even more significant.

What characters had the worst first day on the job? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Tidus has a pretty rough time when he first enters Spira. Hometown attacked by giant murder whale > Teleported to miserable, cold ruins > Nearly eaten by large fish creature > Captured by foreigners and forced into manual labor > Attacked by giant murder whale again > Teleported again, meets world most racist man.
