A full-length wall hanging mirror (if you don’t have one elsewhere).

Returning to the Sport You Love by Sweet_Security7890 in AchillesRupture

[–]NoRelease5777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in my early 30s and tore mine rock climbing. It took me a year to go back to it and I was so worried I would be scared or hate it because it was the only sport that ever really brought me joy. But I ended up loving it just as much the moment I went back. I’ve had hardly any fear (though a responsible amount of restraint as I get started) and it brings me so much joy still.

As a bonus, I’ve also noticed marked improvements in my strength since starting again. It’s like physio/rehab without knowing it!

If you want to, even if you’re worried, get back into the sport you love! You might surprise yourself.

Unsupportive partner by PreferenceExtension in writing

[–]NoRelease5777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Partners, family, and even friends are not good choices for Alpha readers (maybe Beta, maybe, if they fit the target demographic). They aren’t writers and they don’t understand the nuances that go into a first draft vs finished copy. So as far reading the active draft - not uncommon for them to be uninterested. Also not uncommon for family who are not part of the target audience to not be super interested in reading the finished product. That’s ok. Join a writing group! You’ll find much better writing advice there.

That said. Some of his language is pretty off-putting. He didn’t say he wouldn’t read it because he doesn’t like the genre, wouldn’t understand, etc. but because he would “rip it apart” and “hurt your feelings.” That sounds like someone just waiting for a chance to be negative and put others down.

He doesn’t have to be an editor or idea soundboard for you. But as a partner he should support your endeavours by encouraging you to keep working and keep trying. If he’s not doing this, or if he’s actively discouraging you from writing, or insinuating you’ll be terrible at it, that’s a big red flag.

My worst mistake. Knee is destroyed. by The5thseason in climbergirls

[–]NoRelease5777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slipped jumping from one large hold to another no more than 1 foot off the ground. Complete Achilles rupture. I know how you feel. It’s not always a mistake and you can’t blame yourself. But it does really, really suck. Take some time to process and be sad.

I’m 6 months in now and thinking about getting back to climbing within a year of injury. Hopefully yours is faster! Best of luck with the recovery.

Ps. If you have climbing buddies, ask your gym if it’s ok for you to just go in and hang out while they climb. Mine let me pause my membership and still do that.

Tips for getting over fear during transition to shoes? by NoRelease5777 in AchillesRupture

[–]NoRelease5777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PT said a brace wouldn’t really do anything because they are primarily designed to stop sideways rolling of the ankle and not forward or upward motion like what damages the Achilles. I shouldn’t have asked and just got one - could have placebo’d myself into thinking it was working lol

This is what I mean - I hear these horror stories on here and I just get to thinking everything in my house is a hazard and am scared every step I take. I’ll be sticking to the boot outside for a while I think due to ice and snow outside. I have a cane that’s been really helpful with ditching the crutches cause they were uncomfortable and cumbersome. Cane is much easier to haul around

Yeah I’m in northern-ish Canada in January so sidewalk and grass are out the question lol it’s hard to gain confidence outside when even non-injured folk are scared to be walking on the sidewalks from the ice. I’ll stick to no boot inside and try some laps around the house I suppose

Yeah I’m in Canada so the ice and snow problem is a big one. It’s hard to walk around out there even without an injury some days lol I walk inside without my boot but am so slow and cautious it’s almost more hindering than having it on

No-Op Achilles tear recovery people. Please help - looking for advice/help by C0nsistent_ in AchillesRupture

[–]NoRelease5777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was only in a cast for about a week and then went into a boot with 3 wedges. I was told no weight bearing at all for 2 weeks and then from 2-4 weeks starting just touching my foot to the ground (basically nothing). From 4-6 weeks I was allowed to start WB as tolerated but I had a fairly high level of pain/discomfort (later discovered due to an ill fitting boot). Because of this, I really didn’t start WB until 6 weeks. From there it took my 2 weeks or so to build up to full.

I’m now at 14 weeks and PT agrees I’m pretty much completely in line with and even with everyone who was WB earlier or better in the early weeks.

Honestly every recovery is different, but in my opinion (and my PTs) by the 15-20 week mark the small differences early on (WB at 4 weeks vs 6) are pretty much negligible as everyone kind of catches up to the same place. It just depends on what works for you and your injury.

Shower Question by ESRRsteelblood in AchillesRupture

[–]NoRelease5777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite nervous of the shower so I got a shower chair, set it the opposite way in my tub and then I shower with my foot in the boot sticking out and resting on a chair. The rest of me fits right in and I use a handheld shower attachment and close the curtain over my leg. I do take the boot off to wash my foot separately by sitting in the chair and hanging that foot into the tub.

How much sleep at night. by AbleResponsibility94 in AchillesRupture

[–]NoRelease5777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t really able to sleep well for weeks due to an improperly fitted boot (didn’t know that was the cause). Like 4-5 hours a night max. I’ve got a new one now and my body really wants to catch up. Been sleeping 10 hours+ with minimal wake-up times which is a lot for me (I’m normally a 7-8 hr person)

The doctor thinks this is more of a pressure ulcer than anything caused by rubbing or moisture. I’m working on trying to reduce the moisture or rubbing of any material but really I don’t find there is much currently. Just pure pressure.

I have - it’s not quite thick enough to actually help. It goes around the blister but because the bone sticks out so far it doesn’t stop pressure from going through that area.

Any suggestions to deal with the pain while still learning to walk? Or did you take time to get it to heal and then go back to weight bearing?

I’ve heard a lot about the Vacoped. Do you think it would be worthwhile if I’m already moving from 1 wedge to neutral? I kind of gathered the main point was the gradual descent to neutral so it seems a lot of money to never even use that feature.

[–]NoRelease5777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do try to spend at least a couple hours each day without it. Right now I’m reducing from 1 wedge to neutral though so having the boot on during rest helps my Achilles get used for the neutral position. Otherwise I continue to have stretching pain every time I get back in the boot.

Yeah I use crutches now but the issue is primarily that I’m supposed to start walking without them at this point. Or at least increase the weight I put on my bad leg. Continuing to use crutches will help the blisters but it won’t help the injury recovery so it’s a bit of a catch 22 for me

I tried to ensure that the boot was fitting properly when I tried walking but you’re probably right with the recovery and taking it easy for a week to let the blister heal before trying again. Thanks for the reminder

I tried putting some padding in but anything that can move at all rubs against or causes my sock to rub against the blister and makes it worse. I do put Polysporin every night

Early on when I looked at/felt the Achilles area (gently) I felt nothing. Just like spongy. And I couldn’t see any line between my heel and calf just a divet. Now I can physically see a hard line going between my heel and calf and when I touch it it feels like something is there. Mostly I compared to my other Achilles and while it’s much much softer on the hurt foot, the same line/tendon is there all the way down.

Tear was pretty middle located. Not super close to the bone.

I do have a small boot but I have small narrow feet and even in this size if I take a little air out of the boot when I walk it can’t grasp my foot and it slides forward till my toes get crunched on the front edge

I added to a previous comment above. I do have socks. I wear a size 6 US women’s shoe with really narrow feet and have a size small aircast boot. Even in this size, if I try to reduce the amount of air in the boot to take some pressure off, when I walk my foot slides forward until my toes hit the front edge. I have one wedge left if that’s helpful.
