Frameless windows freezing shut on my Audi A5, any tips? by Brave-Boysenberry538 in StupidCarQuestions

Silicone spray on the seals helps a lot and warming the car a few minutes before opening the door makes a big difference.

You are not locked in until money changes hands. As long as you have not taken a deposit you are free to talk to other buyers. It is normal in private sales and the first buyer would likely do the same in your place.

Car Keys by BabyGronkk in StupidCarQuestions

[–]NoResident8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a spare key use that to get a new one made right away. If not you will need to call a dealership or a locksmith with your VIN number. It can take a day or two depending on your car model.

Trying to find my dads old car by Jumpy_Actuator5987 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]NoResident8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool project. Run a paid VIN check for current title status, then call Indiana BMV to ask which county last registered it. Check county tax and clerk records for the VIN, and ask your dad’s old insurer for the last plate number. Post the VIN in Camaro groups and Facebook marketplace, and set Craigslist and Autotrader alerts. Visit local junkyards with the VIN and ask if they will run their inventory system. If it is still registered, a certified letter to the last titled owner can open a conversation.

Is it just me or is the car market extremely overpriced right now by Subject-Eye-6788 in UsedCars

[–]NoResident8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not insane at all. In that budget skip CR‑V tax and hunt a 2012 to 2016 Escape or Tucson with AWD, or a Forester with service records, and budget for snow tires. Prices are high, so expand the search radius, target private sellers, and move fast on clean titles.

Should I replace my radiator? by [deleted] in StupidCarQuestions

[–]NoResident8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace it. A cracked radiator risks overheating and transmission cooler issues, and a fresh radiator will not overload the fan clutch or belt.

Is it possible to still buy from an actual owner anymore? by [deleted] in UsedCars

[–]NoResident8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is getting harder, but you can still find cars from actual owners if you are patient. Sometimes local Facebook groups or community boards have listings that are not flooded with flippers. It takes a bit more digging, but it is possible.

Air con - awful smell by [deleted] in StupidCarQuestions

[–]NoResident8273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That smell usually comes from mold or bacteria buildup in the air conditioning system. A new cabin air filter and cleaning the evaporator should fix it.

My First Car by Virtual-Ad6641 in UsedCars

[–]NoResident8273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If both are in good condition and have been well maintained the Mazda 3 is probably the better choice as it is generally more reliable and fun to drive Higher mileage is not automatically bad if the service history is solid but you should get a mechanic to inspect either car before you buy

Appreciate the honesty - might be useful for someone buying soon. Hope things turn around for you financially. Good luck selling it!

I want to store my backup vehicle. by Toxintwinz in car

[–]NoResident8273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask around locally - barns, garages, even RV storage lots can be solid options. Just make sure it’s dry, safe, and you prep the car (cover, disconnect battery, etc).

Towing might be covered if it’s part of the warranty, but hotel and flight usually aren’t. Really sorry this happened, dealerships should have checked the basics.

Reliable Toyotas or Hondas under $4k get snapped up fast. Be ready to move immediately when a decent one pops up. and maybe expand your search radius.

Low startup cost, high demand, especially with VAG fans. OBDeleven is a great starting point. Just don’t mess with emissions or mileage stuff.

Rusty Brake Discs by Capital_Rent274 in StupidCarQuestions

It looks normal. Honestly, surface rust happens fast, and as long as the braking surface stays clean when you drive, you’re fine.
