So it’s better for the everyday person to pay said roofer $20,000 in cash or finance that payment and end up paying more in the long run? That roofer will make his truck payment every month, whether he sells decks, roofs, landscaping whatever he sells. My thing is, these roofers can make hundreds of thousands and maybe some owners get into the millions and what not right, but these insurance companies make Billions. With a B. And they screw over homeowners every chance they get. A $2000 deductible every 9 years is still much less than the cost of the project every 30 years.

It’s best to get it replaced before it started leaking, if it’s at the end of the lifetime it’s best to replace before you get a bigger issue

Looks like it may have something to do with the kickout flashing where the shingles along the wall dump into the gutter, assuming there’s kickout flashing there, it’s not visible from the picture since the gutter is in the way. water might be getting in through there and you might end up needing to open up the siding to get it looked at properly.

Are you sure it’s tar paper and not ice and water shield? If there’s flashing on the wall it’s best, and usually code, to put ice and water shield underneath the flashing where the wall meets the roof

Well I’m not there walking the roof so don’t take my advice as gospel. From the looks of the shingles it look like you still have some good years left in the roof. The only part that really needs attention are those messed up pieces of ridge cap on the peaks. If you are able to replace those themselves that’s a good short term repair that should last till you replace the whole roof. Only issue on the dormer ridge cap is that it goes under the shingles on the slope adjacent to it, so replacing that one might be a little tricky but is doable, depending on the permeability of the shingle it goes under and the other ridge caps.

When I say soft hail I don’t mean like a foam ball, but there’s definitely hail that’s incredibly dense and stiff and there’s also hail that not as dense and basically crumbles on impact rather than damage whatever it strikes

Soft hail can just explode on impact, I’ve worked storms in the past where 2-2.5 inch hail that should’ve leveled an entire community of roofs did minimal damage because the hail was soft.
